ANNOUNCING THE PERFORMANCE TO THE PATIENT Mr Everett, we will learn how to inject yourself with insulin subcutaneously. You will have to inject it yourself alone also at home, three times every day before your meals. Your cooperation and managing of the right techniques will be the basis of a good and effective treatment. You will get the insulin and the syringe as well as alcohol swabs to clean the planned injection site.
You will inject yourself with insulin into the belly, around the navel or into the thigh. Change the injection site, remember, that for each new shot you have to choose a new place, keep the distance at the size of 3 fingers between the new and the last shot.
It is necessary for the regular insulin absorption. Before injecting yourself with insulin you have to clean the injection site with alcohol swab, then pinch up your skin, make a fold and insert the needle at a 90 angle. Hold the fold of skin throughout injecting yourself. Before withdrawing the needle count to ten, then release the grasp and pull the needle out of the skin fold. When blood appears in the injection site, press it gently with an alcohol swab.
MODEL SITUATION Good morning, Mr Everett. How did you sleep? Do you feel relaxed? Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. May I ask you to come to the treatment room 15 minutes before going to have your breakfast? We will apply/inject the insulin.
Aaaah, you re here. Have they already brought you the breakfast? Well, sit down, please.. I will get the supplies. There is a bottle of insulin,, a syringe and alcohol swabs on the tray. Let s learn how to draw the insulin. Clean the rubber cap of the insulin bottle with one of the alcohol swabs. Good job, you re very clever. Let s continue......now pick the syringe. Can you see well, don t you need glasses? Yes,, just a moment, I ll just get them. Now let in air equal to the amount of your morning insulin dose.
Push the air into the bottle, turn it bottom up and draw the insulin into the syringe. Well-done done. Wipe the injection site with another alcohol swab. Well. Now, pinch up your skin with your left hand and pick the syringe into your right hand at a 90 angle and hold it as a pencil. Insert the needle and push the plunger. Hold the fold throughout the injecting.
Count to ten. Withdraw the needle and simultaneously release the grip on the skin fold. Gently press the alcohol swab on the injection site. All right, we are ready, you were very clever. I think you will be able to do it at home. Now enjoy your breakfast. Thank you for your cooperation.
Thank you for your attention.
