It is designed to assist qualified individuals in assessing their interest in this position.

2 The Opportunity Bentley University, one of the nation's leading business schools, invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of vice president for enrollment management. Reporting to the president and serving as a member of the president s cabinet, the vice president for enrollment management will play a critical role in shaping the university s future, providing vision and leadership for Bentley University to fulfill its mission to educate creative, ethical, and socially responsible organizational leaders by creating and disseminating impactful knowledge within and across business and the arts and sciences. Bentley has been on a tremendous trajectory, moving from an institution with a strong regional reputation to one that is increasingly national and international in its distinction. The university has benefitted from successful leadership in the enrollment area and the new vice president will build on this success, leading the unit through a period of equal growth that is characterized by enhanced attention to strategic planning, analysis, coordination, and collaboration. As a university that prides itself on being a business-focused center of learning operating in an ethical and socially engaged environment, Bentley University seeks an enrollment leader and thinker who will grasp the essential nature of this preeminent institution and employ innovative means to expand the university s visibility to attract, select, and enroll an increasingly diverse and talented group of students. The successful candidate will be an experienced enrollment professional of great skill and finesse who possesses the ability to work with the university s many audiences and balance multiple, sometimes competing, demands. She or he will be passionate about the work of enrollment management and display a proven record of success. The skills of leadership, communication, political savvy, and inclusiveness are essential, as is the ability to build bridges and work in partnership with a wide variety of people and offices, both internally and externally. A medium-sized, independent university located on a classic New England campus just minutes from Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts, Bentley is noted as a business university that distinctively "fuses" business and the arts & sciences and provides international leadership in business education and research. Founded in 1917, the university has a total undergraduate enrollment of 4,247 students and 1,411 graduate students. The undergraduate program is ranked 3 rd in the Best Regional Universities-North category by the 2016 U.S. News and World Report National Universities rankings, and Bloomberg Businessweek ranks Bentley #10 among the top undergraduate business programs in the nation in the business publication s 2016 issue of The Best Undergraduate Business Schools. 3 Enrollment at Bentley University The vice president will oversee undergraduate admission and, beginning in the fall, will have oversight of admission for the graduate school of business. The division currently has a team of 60 committed and seasoned staff members who work closely with faculty, staff, students, and alumnae/i to attract a talented, diverse and engaged student body (see organizational charts in Appendix). There is a strong enrollment attitude on the team, and the holistic approach to candidate review incorporates discussions of fit with attention to priorities of student satisfaction and retention. Undergraduate Admission Facts and Figures The university uses the Common Application and requires a supplemental writing sample. With an eye to mitigating stress for students in the admission process as well as managing the process more carefully internally, Bentley recently eliminated its Early Action plan. A binding Early Decision plan and a Regular Decision plan are offered for applicants. Every freshman applicant is automatically considered for merit scholarships as part of the application process. The average financial aid packages at Bentley meet approximately 94 percent of students demonstrated need. In , Bentley awarded more than $72 million in need-based and merit-based financial aid to more than 65 percent of its undergraduate student body. At present, 60 percent of undergraduate students receive gift aid directly from the university, and the average institutional award is $23,000. 6 The Role of the Vice President for Enrollment Management As the university s chief enrollment officer, the vice president for enrollment management provides the leadership, direction and coordination for a comprehensive enrollment management strategy that is aggressive and innovative and is consistent with the goals, mission and resources of Bentley University. The leadership of the university seeks to be collaborative, innovative, entrepreneurial, and nimble in every phase of the enrollment process and, in collaboration with senior colleagues, the vice president will assume broad leadership within the institution to provide the vision, strategy and operational direction to enhance the university s current and future enrollment. As the university looks to the future with optimism and with a strategic plan for Bentley to be more vigorous, more accomplished, and more relevant to the world of business than ever before, it seeks an enrollment leader who will bring a bold and ambitious vision. The new vice president will employ both traditional and non-traditional means to expand the university s visibility so as to attract, select, enroll, and retain a highly diverse and increasingly talented group of students. Direct reports to this position will include: Associate Vice President, Enrollment Management (includes Financial Aid) Executive Director, Undergraduate Admission and Marketing Executive Director, Enrollment Systems and Analytics Assistant Dean/Director of Graduate Admission Director, Institutional Research Enrollment Systems Coordinator Admissions and Marketing Consultant The vice president will lead enrollment management with energy, enthusiasm, and a spirit of creativity and continuous improvement. The division will benefit tremendously from the strategic use of data to understand, enhance, and best communicate the university s as well 6

7 as individual programs distinctive strengths and possibilities to prospective students. The vice president will forge strong partnerships with other senior university leaders to assure that this work is an inclusive and collaborative university-wide effort that is responsive to the highest aspirations of Bentley University. It is worth emphasizing that this is not a status quo position: Bentley seeks an enrollment professional who is a bold and pioneering thought partner and leader, willing to question continuously and seek constant improvement, take calculated risks, partner broadly across the university in conceptualizing and evaluating possibilities, and engage students and families in new ways. The vice president is expected to capitalize on the considerable existing level of forward momentum and institutional support for his or her area with vigor, enthusiasm, an inclusive and inspirational leadership style, outstanding communication skills, and an eye to the possible, reflecting the entrepreneurial, creative, and socially engaged outlook that characterizes the university. In addition, the vice president for enrollment management will: Lead with vision, integrity, inclusiveness, personal generosity, and sound judgment, engendering trust and accountability across the integrated functions of the enrollment division and throughout the university; Understand the challenges and opportunities for Bentley University in the competitive higher education marketplace; anticipate, act proactively, and respond in earnest with economy and grace according to the university s needs; Possess a deep knowledge of enrollment management and financial aid strategy; analytical ability; and a sophisticated understanding of data informed decision making; Routinely analyze data to shape strategic direction and make appropriate adjustments to an integrated marketing plan that clearly identifies and defines historical university enrollment patterns and forecasts trends in new student markets, particularly at the graduate level; regularly assess the effectiveness of recruitment activities and financial aid programs and make appropriate adjustments so as to lead an effort that is continuously proactive and responsive to both the changing market forces and the university s needs; Lead, direct, manage and review the enrollment staff, with particular attention to professional development needs of the staff; support and motivate a team that is hard working and dedicated, functions collaboratively with one another, and is poised for the integration of the graduate admission staff and operation; Collaborate with colleagues across the university and be a leader who leads by example; be willing to roll up his or her sleeves and get the job done; and carefully listen to and consider the counsel and recommendations of internal stakeholders and external constituents; 7

8 In collaboration with the chief marketing officer, continuously strengthen and refine the university s messaging and methods of delivery to prospective students, families and to the high school guidance community and other critical intermediaries as to how Bentley can best represent its unique strengths and distinctive mission; Present enrollment analysis and reports to university leadership; develop enrollment projections to meet the university s strategic goals. Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership Bentley University seeks a visionary leader who is inventive, optimistic and ready to engage at the highest level of strategic thinking to solidify Bentley s ambitious plans to build a more differentiated, sustainable position and contribute to the sophisticated brand-development initiatives currently underway. The successful candidate will be an innovative, forward-thinking, collaborative, and highly experienced enrollment professional who has the vision and confidence to ask provoking and insightful questions that promote open dialogue. She or he will be able to lead Bentley to a new phase of success in envisioning, planning for, recruiting, admitting and graduating an increasingly talented and diverse student body. The new vice president for enrollment will be asked to address the following critical leadership issues, among others: Sustain gains in recruitment and admission strategy and embrace new commitments Bentley University has experienced significant increased interest in and applications to the university that parallels its ascent in visibility and reputation. Now more than 8,000 students annually vie for just over 900 places in the entering freshman class. The new vice president will sustain and build upon this trajectory by developing an innovative, nuanced, strategic, institutionally coordinated, and statistically supported recruitment and communications plan that will help further raise Bentley s visibility and draw an increasingly talented and globally diverse student body to the university. The vice president will be asked to bring skill, energy, and leadership to the enrollment effort and will be tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy that will further the university s reach and ability to compete for new student populations. With an eye to balancing the competing priorities of increasing net tuition revenue and the quality and diversity of the student body within an environment of constrained resources, the vice president will be responsible for evaluating the use of financial aid in support of institutional priorities and in achieving enrollment goals and allocating those resources for greatest impact. Currently, 92 percent of the university s revenue is derived from tuition. With an eye to balancing the competing priorities of increasing net tuition revenue and the quality and diversity of the student body within an environment of constrained resources, the vice president will be responsible for evaluating the use of financial aid in support of institutional priorities and in achieving enrollment goals and allocating those resources for greatest impact. With attention to net revenue goals, the new vice president will oversee the distribution of financial aid to both new and current students ensuring that its current practices align with the financial need and 8

9 stability of the university now and into its future. Partnering with senior leadership, the vice president will determine optimal enrollment goals, advise on effective pricing strategies, and determine how best to allocate financial resources to achieve these goals. The vice president will aim to maintain the level of engagement and quality of academic performance found in the student body, keeping a focus on identifying and enrolling students who demonstrate a capacity for the cross-disciplinary inquiry of Bentley s educational fusion approach to learning and who will embrace the distinctive opportunity to live and learn in a community that fosters critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Engage the entire campus community in discussing enrollment management vision and strategy, fostering a culture of openness, inclusion, and participation It will be critical for the vice president to build and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with institutional leadership and key colleagues across the university as she or he will be expected to lead an open and continuous exploration of enrollment possibilities at multiple levels and places within the university community. It is expected that she or he will approach colleagues with a genuine openness and eagerness to hear alternate viewpoints, engage in meaningful discourse, and incorporate the thinking and ideas of others. She or he will clearly and consistently articulate the vision and plan for enrollment management and will support transparency and integration by engaging key constituencies (e.g., faculty, student life, communications, finance, advancement) in discussions about institutional enrollment priorities, relevant data, and shared goals. The new vice president will bring the personal qualities necessary to inspire the entire community to participate in the enrollment effort. The vice president will engage with leadership in ongoing conversation about enrollment opportunities, possibilities, and tradeoffs, making transparent both current and potential benefits and costs associated with various paths and policies. The university is specifically seeking a thought leader who will be an independent voice, apprising them of both high points and limitations and challenging and extending their best thinking. Develop a cohesive growth strategy for graduate enrollment In partnership with the provost and dean of the school of business, the vice president will carefully examine and assess Bentley s graduate enrollment plan, identifying opportunities for growth and developing the structure, programs, and initiatives to get there. Bentley currently offers three MBA programs and eight masters degree programs; the university offers part-time enrollment in 9 of its graduate programs, and full-time enrollment is required in the Bentley MBA and Emerging Leader programs. New and innovative graduate programs have recently been created, such as the 11-month Bentley MBA and the Master of Science in Business Analytics. The vice president will be afforded the opportunity to partner with faculty to develop a cohesive vision for enrollment for the graduate school of business. The new vice president will examine the entire undergraduate and graduate admission and financial aid program with an eye to dreaming big: envisioning the optimal enrollment picture for the university and developing the structure, programs, initiatives, and resources required to get there. The president is strongly committed to supporting the highest possible ambitions. 9

10 While there is obviously a limit to what can happen, leadership seeks a vice president who will make strategic requests backed by solid planning, robust data, and rigorous analysis, clearly tied to measurable objectives and goals. In doing so, the vice president will be asked to formulate a strategic and coordinated enrollment plan that is proactive and ambitious while maintaining the flexibility required to anticipate and respond to the rapidly shifting enrollment realities of the market regionally, nationally and internationally. Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities The ideal candidate must demonstrate progressive experience at a senior level in successfully envisioning, developing, implementing, and evaluating an enrollment management strategy emphasizing collaboration across an institution. Experience and success at leading a large, complex organization is desirable. Experience with appropriate information technology and the use of sophisticated data analysis to inform strategic decisions is critical, as is familiarity with marketing and financial aid leveraging for recruitment and retention. The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics: Vision and leadership: ability to lead the creation of Bentley s future student body with vision and creativity; an entrepreneurial outlook and eye to new possibilities and emerging challenges; capacity to make strategic decisions, generate innovative ideas and solutions, and multitask; ability to develop and manage relationships with a diverse array of partners who play different and divergent roles in the university community; an ability to manage, motivate, and develop synergies and a sense of team among a diverse professional staff, and to inspire joy in one s work; Strong analytical capacity: the ability to engage in constant strategic analysis of opportunities and challenges; to produce forward-looking, transparent strategic plans and budgets that link expenditures to outcomes; to assess the effectiveness of how recruitment and financial aid funds are employed to achieve enrollment goals; to produce regular and systematic comparative reports that detail month-to-month as well as annual progress toward enrollment goals; and to employ information on national and international trends in higher education and on developments in competitor institutions effectively in planning; Proven effectiveness and expertise in enrollment and change management: a demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful enrollment strategies and initiatives; significant professional experience managing the complex interplay of marketing and recruiting campaigns, enrollment goals, yield, and financial aid; knowledge of the strategic use of financial aid; and genuine enjoyment in leading, managing, and implementing large-scale innovation; Demonstrated ability in creatively marketing a niche institution so as to achieve superior levels of enrollment performance: proven success in innovative thinking and risk-taking combined with excellent execution of both complex and routine marketing strategies; a 10

Bentley University: An Overview Bentley University, located 12 miles west of Boston, is one of the nation's leading business universities, dedicated to preparing a new kind of business leader, one with the deep technical skills, the broad global perspective and the high ethical standards required to make a difference in an ever-changing world. To achieve this goal, Bentley infuses an advanced business curriculum with the richness of a liberal arts education. Bentley University blends the breadth and technological strength of a large university with the values and student focus of a small college. Located on a classic New England campus just minutes from Boston, Bentley is a dynamic community of leaders, scholars and creative thinkers. Bentley enrolls 4,247 undergraduate and 1,411 graduate students, including 40 PhD students. The university offers 21 undergraduate majors and a comprehensive graduate program that 11

12 includes PhD programs in Business and Accountancy, an MBA for working professionals as well as two cohort-based MBAs, eight Masters of Science degrees, and an integrated MS + MBA. Bentley also delivers custom executive education programs. Bentley s student body is increasingly diverse and talented. International students comprise 16 percent of undergraduates and over 30 percent of graduate students. Over the past five years, applications have increased, selectivity has remained consistently high, and freshman retention rates and graduation rates have been outstanding, resulting in a stable and predictable budget. Bentley has an annual operating budget of approximately $200M. It has not experienced an operating deficit in over 50 years. Moody s recently independently reviewed Bentley and affirmed its A3 Stable rating, citing among its strengths prudent fiscal management, healthy student market position with stable demand metrics, and an attractive campus due to regular investment. The university has an endowment of more than $265M. Endowment performance last year was in the top quintile of over 800 universities and colleges according to NACUBO. Along with preparing for its Centennial during 2017, the university is embarking on a Capital Campaign this summer. The university s 163 acre campus is both beautiful and highly functional and well maintained. The campus enjoys a comparatively low level of deferred maintenance due to its discipline of investing in facilities renewal and construction and its planned maintenance programs. Sightlines ranks Bentley s facilities among the top campuses in several important categories in its database of over 450 colleges and universities. Technology investment is evident through Bentley s seven high-technology learning laboratories, including a fully operational trading room with Bloomberg terminals. All of Bentley s 90 classrooms are technology enabled with LCD projectors and internet connectivity, and some are smart classrooms that enable synchronous hybrid learning with members of the class connecting from remote locations. Bentley s technology footprint is rooted in its long-standing commitment to providing students with unparalleled access to the technologies that drive modern business. From being the first business school to issue laptop computers in 1987 to pioneering the delivery of degrees in human factors and design-centered thinking, Bentley students have had access to the technology and related degrees shaping business today. Students have access to seven hightech learning labs where they can develop web and mobile apps in Android or ios environments, run big data analysis using R or Python, and/or build portfolios based on realtime insights from Bloomberg terminals. Bentley has a number of technology-driven Master of Science degrees including Business Analytics, Information Technology and Human Factors in Information Design. STRATEGIC PLAN Bentley has developed a strategic roadmap for that is founded on two key premises: Educating tomorrows leaders requires that full-time faculty be outstanding teacherscholars. The university must constantly update and improve the physical, technological and human environment within which learning takes place. 12

History The university was founded in 1917 by Harry C. Bentley, a pioneering business educator and author who taught accounting at Boston University and other area schools and wanted to use his own methods in accounting education. The Bentley School of Accounting and Finance began with an initial graduating class of 18 students and by 1937 grew to a combined enrollment of 3,000 day and evening students. In 1968, Bentley moved to its current 163 acre campus in Waltham, MA. In 1971, Bentley College, as it was then named, gained the authority to grant the Bachelor of Science degree in all business disciplines and its graduate school was established in Bentley received AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation in The College began offering majors outside of business, beginning with English, History, and Philosophy in The College was authorized to grant PhDs in Business and Accountancy in In 2008, Bentley earned EQUIS (European Quality Improvement Program) international accreditation, one of only three U.S. institutions with both EQUIS and AACSB accreditation. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts changed Bentley s status from a college to a university in In 2012, Bentley launched the Bentley MBA, a new and highly innovative MBA program involving unique collaboration across business and the arts and sciences. Academic Programs Bentley offers a rich array of programs: Undergraduate Programs A Bentley education is an unparalleled fusion of business and the arts and sciences. Its expansive curriculum, focusing on business, technology, and the liberal arts, provides students with numerous options for shaping an academic program that fits their skills, interests, and career goals. The majority of students at Bentley major in business - largely accounting and finance - while simultaneously enrolled in a basic core of liberal arts courses. Bentley also offers several outstanding majors in arts and sciences. In addition, 800 of Bentley's 4,000 undergraduates double-major, combining a business major with Bentley's innovative Liberal Studies Major (LSM). Students majoring in Liberal Arts can complete the Business Studies Major (BSM) in business and Bentley's innovative Liberal Studies Major (LSM). 14

15 The university is in the final stages of launching a predominantly asynchronous undergraduate degree completion Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program for mature learners working professionals, military service personnel, etc. who did not complete their bachelor s degree or who have an associate degree. Graduate Programs Bentley MBA Designed for those with five to 10 years of professional experience, the 11-month Bentley MBA program takes a dramatically different approach to business education as compared to other Boston MBA programs. Students work in a collaborative 24x7 studio setting to explore four themes: Innovation, Value, Environments and Leadership. This full-time MBA program includes three field-based trips and puts special emphasis on developing leadership potential. Emerging Leaders MBA Recent college graduates can pursue the full-time, two-year Emerging Leaders MBA program to jumpstart their career with an added credential. Students gain a comprehensive grounding in the key areas of business as well as a broad understanding of how all aspects of an organization fit together. Opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world business experience round out the MBA curriculum and expand students résumés for future employers. Professional MBA The Professional MBA program offers a flexible format for study serving working professionals who need to balance the demands of family and career. Courses focused on strategic thinking, application of technology, effective communication and ethical management prepare students to lead in a global business environment. Many students complete the program using the university s highly valued hybrid approach that enables them to join classes synchronously from remote locations. Master of Science Programs Bentley Master of Science programs develop expertise in specific disciplines and position students well for leading companies and other organizations. Leadership President, Gloria Cordes Larson, BA, JD Gloria Cordes Larson, JD, joined Bentley University as its president in July 2007 after a prestigious career as an attorney, public policy expert, and business leader. She was drawn to the Boston area business school because of its approach to redefining business education -- by integrating a business curriculum with the arts and sciences. During Larson s tenure, the former Bentley College became a university and established a number of new programs focused on the value of a business education. At the undergraduate level the school recently expanded its commitment to a fused curriculum with additional courses co-taught by business and arts & sciences faculty. Its most recent innovation, the Bentley MBA, is an 11-month global program where students pursue four 10-week modules in a collaborative, studio-based setting. Larson also launched the Center for Women and Business at Bentley in 2011 focused on advancing shared leadership among women and men in the corporate world and developing women business leaders. Before joining Bentley, Larson was widely recognized for her significant influence in economic policy at the state and federal level. She was co-chair of the Government Strategies Group at Foley Hoag LLP, prior to joining the university, and worked in the public sector before that serving as secretary of Economic Affairs under Massachusetts Governor William Weld and deputy director of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission. Larson is well known for her significant corporate leadership and civic involvement. Recent honors include the Boston Business Journal s Power 50: Influential Bostonians; Boston Magazine s 50 Most Powerful Women in Boston; and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce s inaugural Collaborative Leadership Award and Academy of Distinguished Bostonians Award.
