1 Citrix Enterprise Mobility Report Plus 5 Steps to Building an Enterprise Mobility Strategy A survey of 510 IT Directors, CIOs, and Architects on the state of mobile applications, data, and devices in the enterprise.

2 Citrix Enterprise Mobility Report Solutions Brief 2 Mobility today Citrix surveyed 510 IT Directors, CIOs, and Architects from April 2012 to understand the impact of mobility and bring-your-own device trends on IT. The results show both the opportunity and challenges of mobility in the enterprise. This report showcases the current mobile landscape inside organizations today, highlights key themes and concerns, and the extent to which companies large and small are planning for these challenges. Building on these trends, the report concludes with 5 steps that any enterprise can take to build an effective mobility strategy. The overriding theme of this report is how diverse the mobile device, application and data landscape has become and how this complexity will only increase over the coming year. 3 3 Mobile device popularity is divided and the picture today shows just how heterogeneous enterprise mobility is. On average, iphone is the primary SmartPhone used by 39% of organizations, while 36% of respondents said BlackBerry is their company s primary device. Primary mobile devices in by company size Not surprisingly, ipad is the preferred tablet device, with 91% saying Apple s device is their primary tablet over second-place PlayBook (5%). Companies of all sizes are managing a large number of apps. On average, respondents said they had 216 applications inside their organization, with results again varying by company size. Small companies have 21 apps in their organization, mid-size companies have 141, and large companies have 337. 4 4 Not only are there a lot of apps, but also a wide variety in the types of applications in use. Windows apps represent 61% of a company s portfolio, followed by internal web apps at 24%, SaaS apps like Salesforce at 10%, and mobile apps at 7%. This picture looks to become even more diverse next year, with Windows apps decreasing 10 points to 50% and SaaS and mobile combined increasing to 25% of a company s portfolio. Productivity ranks as the number 1 priority by 58% of all respondents, followed by collaboration at 51%, and line of business at 49%. While IT administrators and directors see productivity going mobile, CIOs see collaboration as most important. Business decision makers favor expense reporting, CRM, and BI applications. 6 6 Mobility s impact on IT All of this complexity across devices and apps is causing significant strain within the IT organization. The findings below show how issues resulting from device fragmentation, application proliferation, and even unmanaged cloud data storage are simultaneously converging to challenge all of a company s conventional device-centric IT management principles. Respondents are concerned over the security threats posed by an increasingly mobile workforce. 95% say they are concerned about information contained in s being stored on mobile devices, 94% are concerned about information stored within mobile applications, and 91% are concerned about corporate data stored in the-wild through personal cloud storage services, such as Dropbox. Today, only 36% of employees are equipped with the applications they need for their job on the first day they arrive. Of greater concern, only 55% of employees that leave the company have their access privileges turned off the day they leave, opening a significant data walk problem for the organization. 7 7 The need for an enterprise mobility strategy One thing has become clear: companies today need a more dynamic approach to managing this complex picture. Traditionally, a mobility strategy has focused on managing the device itself, with some also looking to get their arms around mobile applications and cloud data. 8 8 The majority of respondents told us that an integrated device and application management approach is needed. Customers want a single solution that provides employees any-device access to corporate data and applications with the control and security IT needs this is the concept of an enterprise app store. When asked about the need for an enterprise app store to manage access to an organization s wide array of applications and data by 2013, there was a strong positive response. Enterprise app store use in 2013 The question then becomes, what are the best practices for designing a mobility strategy that is more information-centric than device-centric? 5 Steps to mobilizing your enterprise The objective of any mobility strategy should be to securely manage corporate data on any device, simplify the management of applications that are increasingly decentralized, and improve the contextual control over app and data delivery. While every company s mobility objectives are unique, there are common elements of a well-designed approach to mobility that any company can adopt. Below are 5 steps to designing a mobility strategy that optimizes for an increasingly dynamic and heterogeneous IT environment.

Enterprise mobility for app, data, and devices Step 1: secure your apps through controllers To resolve data security issues at the information layer, a controller approach can provide the necessary management across a broad array of application and data types. Windows: given the large investments in Windows applications coupled with the increasing need for usage on non-windows devices, delivering desktop applications from the cloud through virtualization is a cornerstone controller strategy for any enterprise. Since most Windows apps were designed for a keyboard and mouse, the key is to use a solution that can optimize the user experience for mobile devices. Internal web applications: another finding of this survey is that only a quarter of companies today have unified access to their web applications. Control here involves next generation SSO technologies that can stitch together unified access to a broad array of websites, both internal and external to the organization. Cloud data: frequently expressed as my Dropbox problem, control of cloud data storage involves reattaching file access to your corporate directory so that storing and sharing privileges can be governed by IT. SaaS: the rise of SaaS (SalesForce, Evernote, etc.) has resulted in the loss of control of these key apps that, by definition, reside outside the datacenter. Today, only 20% of companies believe they have a handle on SaaS usage. However, most SaaS apps today use SAML as an industry-standard access language. Controlling access to SaaS apps in-house can dramatically increase an organization s ability to regain line-of-sight into SaaS usage.

10 10 Step 2: secure data on mobile devices through controllers A better approach to device management is device controllers, which abstracts access and security away from the device itself, putting fine-grain information control back in the hands of IT. Mobile apps: there are two keys to securing mobile applications wrapping the client application and providing flexibility for cross-platform development. App wrapping effectively controls a native mobile application by tethering access so that the app can become locked or wiped based on IT policy. Solutions that also control HTML5 apps provide a flexible, crossplatform alternative to mobilizing key business processes and applications. Cloud data on mobile: this involves encrypting the data files on mobile devices, providing follow-me access across devices, and supporting the ability to wipe the data if the situation is warranted. Step 3: control access based on identity With the proliferation of apps in the enterprise, one of the main issues to address is mapping apps to job function. Core to this principle is role-based identity management. Solutions here include: Flexible support for multiple authentication types Active Directory federation Role mapping to appropriate applications and data stores SSO to stitch together SaaS, web app, mobile, and Windows app access Active identity management to automatically provision and de-provision access to resources Step 4: control access based on policy In addition to identity, sophisticated policies must be put into place to provide contextually aware mobile information access. Key checks and policies need to include: Location (office, remote) Device type (SmartPhone, tablet, OS, etc.) Network strength/offline access Authentication requirements (single/multi-factor) Event-drive access disablement (e.g., no access for a defined period) These policies should then be applied down to the specific application or file to allow or restrict access.

What s left is balancing IT control with an end-user experience built around convenience through an enterprise app store. Key components of any enterprise app store should include: Unified store for all apps and data: Windows, internal web apps, SaaS, mobile, and cloud data Personalization for each role: for example, sales has access to Salesforce, finance has access to SAP, etc. App request workflows: manager approval of access, etc. Self-service subscriptions for app updates Native app delivery for mobile devices in use Follow-me access to information across devices These strategies ultimately result in freedom for the end-user to use any device with self-service access to his or her apps and data, while IT is able to secure and manage all of a company s information resources.
