Feeling gutsy? Get a hands on experience with your first sea turtle necropsy! Gross necropsies are a valuable tool in determining cause of death in animals as well as serve a large platform for research potential. Each year, hundreds of sea turtles strand throughout the Atlantic coast and much research is being performed on these specimens. Join Dr. Nancy Stedman and Dr. Terry Norton as they walk through the process of performing a sea turtle necropsy, review anatomy and physiology, and learn the proper techniques for sample collection and handling. Then, it s your turn divide into groups and perform your own sea turtle necropsy! Lab will also cover a review the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network s (STSSN) data collection protocols including obtaining biopsies, photo documentation and morphometric s for an official STSSN stranding report. Please bring your own scrubs or coveralls, and closed toes shoes for this lab! An overview of venomous snake identification, using our native Southeastern United States snake species as examples followed by thorough demonstrations of capture techniques, restraint and transport techniques, tubing, sexing, data collection and morphometric, health assessment sampling methods, etc. Medical training for those involved with venomous animal procedures in the areas of surgical preparation, intubation, anesthetic protocols, surgical monitoring and sample diagnostics will be demonstrated. 4 PRE & POST CONFERENCE EXCURSION DETAILS: White Oak Conservation Center & Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens DATE: Monday, September 15 th TIME: 8:00 6:30 COST: $ (Includes lunch and afternoon snack) *Register quickly only 75 seats available! The first stop on this charter bus tour takes you from Jekyll Island to Yulee, Florida to visit White Oak Conservation Center. Located on 7,400 acres of forest and wetlands White Oak is possibly Florida s best kept secret. Home to some of the rarest wild animals on the planet, White Oak is a leading international center for research, breeding, training, education and field programs for wildlife around the world. Meet some cheetah, rhino, giraffe, antelope, birds and much more! After lunch, a quick bus trip will take you to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens for the afternoon where you will get a special look at the brand new Land of the Tiger exhibit as well as a special Komodo dragon training session. Then, spend the afternoon exploring the zoo on your own before the bus departs back to at 5:30pm. Take a walk on the wild side and join members the Georgia Sea Turtle Center research team as they explore Jekyll Island and track the many telemetered animals that are being studied. In the morning, learn about the techniques used to study wild populations of American alligators. Participants will learn about the equipment used to safely capture and handle wild caught alligators. Additionally, participants will observe how to draw blood and collect tissue samples from a live alligator. Throughout the program will discuss the wildlife health implications of alligators inhabiting aquatic habitats in developed areas. The program will conclude with a 15 minute presentation on the basic biology and behavior of the American alligator and an excursion to radiotrack a previously caught adult alligator. After lunch on your own, spend the afternoon with additional members of the Jekyll Island research team tracking Eastern box turtles and Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes and exploring Jekyll Island s diverse habitats. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellant, closed toed shoes and of course your camera! Join the 4 H Tidelands Nature Center for a guided kayak tour in the salt marshes around Jekyll Island! This 3 hour kayak trip offers a crab's eye view of Jekyll's tidal ecosystem. As you paddle you might see herons, egrets, and wood storks feeding along the banks or soaring overhead, diving pelicans and terns, and fiddler crabs by the thousands. Dolphins are frequently sighted, as well as the occasional manatee or sea turtle! Our guides are experienced naturalists who will share the secrets of the ecology of this fascinating environment. Trips are suitable for beginners as well as experienced paddlers. Each trip includes an orientation and basic paddling instruction. All equipment is provided. You may choose tandem or single kayak. All you need to bring is water to drink and shoes that can get wet. We also recommend a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Please dress comfortably for your onwater excursion. Jekyll Island s beaches are special nesting habitat for hundreds of loggerhead sea turtles every year. Join the Georgia Sea Turtle Center s research team to witness a sea turtle nest excavation of a recently hatched sea turtle nest! Help researchers gather data on the nest, inventory shell fragments and help tiny straggler hatchlings make their way to the ocean as they start the journey of life.
