1 The youth who attend Montreat Youth & Middle School Conferences tell us that they love small group - a place where they can fit right in and share their journey of faith with their peers. They need outstanding small group leaders to facilitate this important experience - perhaps it s YOU they need! In addition to leading your small group: You may be asked to volunteer for conference tasks, recreation, registration, etc. You ll be reimbursed for travel expenses (based on the conference center travel policy); You ll receive on-site lodging and meals; and You ll have access to child care at Montreat site conferences (lodging and meals for children and family members are the financial responsibility of the SGL). Expectations & Requirements of MYC & MSC 2016 Small Group Leaders - SGLs are needed for youth conferences onsite at Montreat and for the Middle School Conference at Maryville College in Maryville, TN. Montreat Conference Center is committed to selecting a wide range of persons who: Are members of denominations that relate to the World Communion of Reformed Churches (see member churches at Are 21 years of age by the time the conference begins Are experienced youth leaders (volunteer or professional) Ultimately value the experience our young people have encountering God s work, forming Christian community and growing in faith at Montreat more than their own Small Group Leader experience. Will be available and fully present for SGL Training. See application for training times. Will abide by the Montreat SGL Covenant included with this application. The selection process of small group leaders is composed of three major elements: The evaluation of experience working with youth The assessment of prior teaching and group leadership The recognition of an abiding Christian faith and prior service to the Church
2 Montreat Staff work together to select SGLs that represent diverse geographical distribution, racial/ethnic diversity, both paid and volunteer church leadership. We will work to fill small group leadership in a way that reflects our commitment to diversity. In selecting small group leaders, we take into account both the individual and the overall profile of a week s leadership slate, distance traveled, length of service/availability. To apply, please fill out and return the following SGL Application. We now offer two early application options: Apply by January 1 and be notified of our decision by February 1. Apply by February 1 and be notified of our decision by March 1. ALL applications received after February 1 will be considered until all positions are filled. Once all positions have been filled, applications will be placed on a waiting list. Please allow up to three - four weeks for your application to be reviewed. Wait for us to contact you after your reference has been contacted and responded back to us. SGL manuals including complete details will be available in late spring What is a Small Group Leader responsible for? Printing out your own copy of the Small Group Leader Manual and preparing your lessons prior to coming to Montreat for training. Bringing a few specialty supplies as requested by MRA staff or Conference Directors. Embracing the call and responsibility of serving as a Small Group Leader with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. Agreeing to and abiding by the Small Group Leader Covenant included in this application. Covering costs of lodging, meals and travel for children & family members and must be paid prior to your arrival. Family housing is given on a space available basis and won t be made until two weeks prior to the conference. What is Montreat Conference Center responsible for? Covering the costs of the sgl s travel according to the Montreat Conference Center travel policy. (you will be given a copy of the policy if selected) Housing and meals during the conference. Small group leaders share a double room with another Small Group Leader. Most of the supplies for the Small Group experience Preparing the Small Group Manual and providing a pdf to small group leaders. Covering the cost of the required background check. Covering costs of childcare during childcare hours (Montreat site only).

5 Return to: Montreat Youth Conferences Small Group Leader Covenant If I am accepted as a Small Group Leader I agree to enter into covenant with the Montreat Youth or Middle School Conferences to: A. Serve Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. B. Seek to fulfill the Five Intentions of Youth Ministry as outlined in The Guidebook for Youth Ministry in Presbyterian and Reformed Churches which are: a. To call young people to discipleship in Jesus Christ. b. To respond to the needs and interests of young people. c. To work together in partnership, young people and adults. d. To be connected to the whole church, community and world. e. To be inclusive of all young people. C. Help the Planning Team to achieve the goals of their conference. This information is available in both publicity materials and on the website at D. Serve as facilitator of small group sessions, creating a space in which young people are able to discuss the topics of the conference, reflect theologically and express their opinions. (In the MYC & MSC settings, small groups are educational in nature and are not therapy groups. Small Group Leaders should not impose their personal agendas, issues, or problems on the group. In this way, they prevent unhealthy co-dependencies within the group. Small group leaders seek to provide young people with a supportive and caring environment in which to examine significant issues of faith and personal life. However, a Small Group Leader is not expected to act in a therapeutic role. If a young person discloses personal problems of a more serious nature, the small group leader should notify the Conference Co-Directors or Conference Pastor. E. Be present for and actively participate in Small Group Leader trainings (including beginning orientation) for each week of participation in conference, even though I may have been a Small Group Leader in previous years. F. With energy, intelligence, imagination and love, lead a small group of youth and adults each session during the week. G. Faithfully use the Small Group Leader s manual which has been prepared for the conference. Print and bring a copy with me. Joyfully and energetically prepare my small group leaders lessons in advance of training. H. Seek to attend any devotion and manual review meetings. I. Serve in other capacities as needed throughout the conference by helping with activities such as trivia, movies, coffee house, recreational activities, etc. J. Serve as a role model and abide by the dress code that all youth conferees are expected to follow. K. Abstain from alcohol and illegal substances from the time I arrive on site for the conference(s) themselves until the time I leave the conference site after my service is completed. L. Abide by Montreat s Juvenile Protection Policy & Sexual Harassment Prevention Policy. I will receive training on these policies before the conference. M. Practice responsible social media use as outlined in SGL training. N. Contact Montreat immediately if I am not able to serve as a Small Group Leader. O. Understand that this agreement may be canceled by me or Montreat Conference Center without any obligation to either party. PLEASE KEEP THIS COPY OF THE COVENANT FOR YOUR REFERENCE
6 Return to: Montreat Youth Conferences Applicant Disclosure and Consent for Background Investigation For security purposes, all applicants for volunteer positions related to the Montreat Conference Center/Mountain Retreat Association (MCC/MRA) must undergo a background check before any volunteer duties can be performed. This background check will consist of a criminal record search, validation of current and previous names and addresses, and validation of social security number. In addition, a Driving Record report will be required for any volunteer who will be performing an assignment for MCC/MRA, which requires the volunteer s operation of a motor vehicle as part of the assignment. I hereby authorize MCC/MRA to perform a background check as outlined above using an agency of MCC/MRA s choice. I understand and agree that the information contained in the background check will be used solely for the purpose of determining my eligibility to perform volunteer duties with MCC/MRA. All personal information provided by me will be held in strictest confidence by both MCC/MRA and the agency performing the background check.
