Losing your job wasn t your like this initially shock, choice. But it could be an opportunity in disguise--perhaps an opening to find a job or new career that s a better fit for your skills, interests and experience. then anger and mourning, Y O U R J O B PAT H. With this in mind, take an inventory: Consider all of the skills you ve developed in jobs, volunteer activities, hobbies, your education Identify what you most enjoy and would like to continue in your next job and what you d rather live without We ll assist you with your inventory and translate it into opportunities in indemand fields, and, if needed, connect you with training programs and funding. eventually, acceptance and the desire--and need--to move forward and find new opportunities. Tap Into Your Network You know people. Chances are they know about job openings that aren t being advertised. At least they probably know people who know someone who s hiring. But unless they know you re looking for work and what kind, this won t matter. More than 80 percent of jobs go unadvertised, so contact people you already know friends, neighbors, relatives, people at church or other organizations you belong to, former supervisors or classmates. Basically anyone you know. You re Not Alone--Get the Help You Need In the meantime, you may need help paying the bills. We ll guide you through the process of applying for unemployment compensation. We also can help determine whether you qualify for other types of assistance through the Department of Job and Family Services. And we can refer you to other assistance.

Actually, our career development workshops are an excellent idea for anyone wanting to stand out in today s competitive job market. Among the several workshops we offer are two that will prepare you for the job hunt: Resume Writing and Preparing for Employment, which focuses on improving interviewing skills and traits that employers value. With the help of our partners, our One-Stop Centers serve the general public as well as people with specific job and career needs, such as those displaced by layoffs and business closings, individuals with disabilities, veterans, older workers, youth and people needing assistance with basic education as well as career education and training. Our One-Stop Partners Include: The Rehabilitation Services Commission, which helps persons with physical or mental disabilities obtain and maintain employment Experience Works, which serves persons 55 and older Veteran Services, through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services The Adult Basic & Literacy Education (ABLE) program of Mansfield City Schools Madison Adult Career Center Pioneer Career & Technology Center We ve developed a productive network of partnerships that connect a diverse array of people, through our One-Stop Centers, to the specialized employment, career and training services they need.
5 t r a i n i n g One-Stop: Your GatewayTo Training & New Careers Preparing Dislocated Workers for New Opportunities As a dislocated worker, you may be thinking about switching to a new, growing career field that is ripe with opportunity. But you re concerned that you ll need training and can t afford it without a job. The employment counselors of the One-Stop Centers of Richland and Crawford Counties can help dislocated workers reassess their careers, skills and interests and connect them to training programs for in-demand occupations and money to pay for it. Finding the Money to Pay for Training Our One-Stop Centers offer orientations about available training programs and funding. Through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) we provide job training money for a wide variety of individuals: Unemployed and underemployed, including persons dislocated by layoffs and plant closings Persons age 55 and over Disabled individuals Low income youth, ages Veterans. Persons at risk of losing their jobs without additional training WIA funding, in many cases, covers all training costs. We can help you find other funding sources, too, such as scholarships. Ready for a career change? Job prospects in your current field may have taken a bad turn. Or maybe you ve decided it s time to try something you ve always wanted to do. Either way, we can help. Extra Help When Jobs Leave the Country You may qualify for additional assistance through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, if your job loss was caused by increased imports or relocation of business operations outside the U.S. These benefits may include job training, income support, job search and relocation allowances, a tax credit to help pay for health insurance, and a wage supplement to certain re-employed, trade-affected workers age 50 and over.
6 t r a n s i t i o n s A Helping Hand for Dislocated Workers Temporary Support Helps Out During the Transition If you need help meeting household expenses while you re out of work, you may qualify for cash, food, medical, child care and other assistance through the Richland County Department of Job and Family Services. If you meet eligibility guidelines, this temporary assistance can relieve some of the pressure and allow you to concentrate on finding a new job. The One-Stop Centers of Richland and Crawford Counties can also offer you guidance in applying for unemployment compensation. Assistance Helps Meet Expenses Temporary assistance available through the Department of Job and Family Services includes: Monthly cash assistance through Ohio Works First (OWF). OWF recipients receive benefits while they participate in work or job training programs. Child care assistance, to help you attend job training program Food assistance, which requires participation in work program activities, such as those provided by One-Stop Centers Assistance with medical expenses Emergency assistance to help qualified persons with purchases required to gain or maintain employment such as tools, uniforms and car repairs Money gets tight when you re laid off from work. We can provide temporary assistance to help make ends meet while you re looking for your next job. Also to help individuals and families manage financially, Our One-Stop Centers offer a workshop on financial management and budgeting.
