1 ROLE SPECIFICATION 1. JOB DETAILS JOB TITLE: RESPONSIBLE TO: LOCATION: BANK STAFF NURSE HEAD NURSE ACORNS 2. JOB PURPOSE The main responsibilities will be the day-to-day care of the children staying at Acorns and support for the families. 3. SERVICE DELIVERY The postholder will ensure that all aspects of the Role Specification and the resultant activities are relevant to the needs and aspirations of all sections of the communities we serve. The good practices associated with Equal Opportunities, with all that it implies, is expected. 4. STAFF SUPPORT The postholder will be aware of any support services made available. 5. ETHOS The postholder will participate in ensuring that our services are family centered and family led and will be mindful of the need to promote and maintain a healthy environment both within Acorns and in all our external contacts. 6. TEAMWORK The postholder will promote and maintain all aspects of good teamwork and will take a personal responsibility towards ensuring the Care Team s healthy functioning. Page 1 of 5

2 7. COMMUNICATION Good communication between all members of staff is seen as a prerequisite to a healthy organisation. It is therefore a personal responsibility of all staff members that good communication practices are adhered to. 8. PRIMARY TASKS a) Actively encourage a family atmosphere within Acorns. b) Use a systematic and individualised approach to the care of the child and family. c) Ensure drugs are safely administered and stored. d) Encourage the philosophy of Acorns and present a good public image. e) Evaluate the level of care given and the parent s view of care. f) Assess, maintain and evaluate agreed standards of care in partnership with family carers. g) To promote the safety of the clients of Acorns the postholder will observe and report to appropriate management any child whose well being gives cause for concern. h) Liaise closely with the Community Team. i) Actively encourage and co-operate with Volunteers working at Acorns. j) Actively guide and supervise volunteer befriending work with children at Acorns. k) Liaise with the Activities Co-ordinator and participate in outings and playwork arranged for the children staying at Acorns. l) Attend staff meetings and team briefings and participate in other meetings as appropriate. m) Take advantage of training opportunities to further develop your skills and expertise to enhance your role within the Acorns Care Team. 3 n) Maintain an awareness of the multi-cultural nature of the West Midlands and help ensure that our service delivery is appropriate to meet these diverse needs. o) Maintain the Health & Safety Regulations of Acorns Children s Hospice Trust. p) Be aware of and comply with the Fire Regulations within the Acorns buildings. q) Inform the Head Nurse/Team Manager of any developments which may affect the smooth running of in-house. r) Carry out any reasonable duty as requested by the In-house Team Manager or Deputy. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION BANK STAFF NURSE EXPERIENCE SKILLS AND ABILITY QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING OTHER ESSENTIAL Experience of paediatric nursing Family centred work. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain boundaries. Holistic approach. Flexible and used to working on own initiative. Ability to take responsibility for adopting best practice in the implementation of individual care plans. Team Player RSCN/ RN (Child) RGN Ability and willingness to undergo further appropriate training. Ability to work under pressure/ tolerate stress within themselves and others. Shifts including evening/ weekend work. Commitment to equal opportunities. DESIRABLE Experience of paediatric palliative care. Experience of work with children with special needs or disability. 5 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT BANK STAFF NURSE REPORTING TO: Head Nurse LOCATION: Selly Oak/Walsall/Worcester HOURS OF WORK: SALARY: experience Flexible. Maximum 37.5 hours per week Shifts as follows: 12.5 hour day (7.30am-8.00pm or 9.00am-9.30pm) 7.5 hour day (7.30am-3.00pm or 2.00pm-9.30pm) 11 hour nights (8.45pm-7.45am) per hour dependent on HOLIDAYS: Commensurate with hours worked. NB. No other terms and conditions apply as bank staff are not employed by Acorns, but from time to time we may call upon you to work for us to cover short term requirements. Should you accept work from us you will work for the duration of that shift only and there are no further obligations either party to the other. Page 5 of 5
