1 Passport to Boulder County Community Services Welcome to Community Services! We are so pleased that you have joined us and want to ensure that your first months with us lay the groundwork for a productive and satisfying career with Boulder County Community Services. This passport to Community Services is your guide as a new employee to: Identify and track activities that need to be completed Get the foundation information, tools, and resources to build key relationships Find helpful tips for a successful journey through your first few days and months in your new job This passport only serves as a guide on how to get familiar in your role. You will be receiving specific detailed new hire information from your manager/supervisor. We re glad that you have chosen Community Services and hope that you will feel welcome, prepared, supported, and productive in no time! Why is onboarding important? Beyond the County orientation event that you attend, onboarding is a more comprehensive process by which new employees are socialized into the CS culture, in addition to being oriented to your specific job tasks and work expectations. We view onboarding as a process where new employees move from being organizational outsiders to becoming organizational insiders Research has supported the idea that effective onboarding can have a dramatic effect on job performance and satisfaction, organizational commitment, and retention. CS realizes that you ve invested a great deal of time and energy in the job seeking process, and provides onboarding as an important subsequent step. If we do our job well, it should increase the likelihood of you achieving your expected outcomes namely, effective job performance, job satisfaction, and commitment to Boulder County. It should also ensure that you understand your specific role and responsibilities, boost your confidence, and help you to quickly become an active and engaged employee at CS. We believe that better informed new hires translate into more productive and happy employees.

2 Here s a tip about our organizational hierarchy, which will help you on your road to success: BOULDER COUNTY GOVERNMENT Board of County Commissioners COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT Robin Bohannan Department Manager YOUR DIVISION YOUR PROGRAM/TEAM Your direct supervisor and your colleagues can help you complete these activities during your first days, weeks and months. Your onboarding plan outlines conversations to have with your supervisor which are critical to your success. Please be sure to cover each of these topics with your supervisor over the coming weeks.

3 First Day Contact Human Resources at to set up an appointment to complete required paperwork. Be sure and bring your original Social Security card and picture identification e.g. valid driver s license or passport Human Resources is in the Administrative Services Building: th St. Boulder, CO. Tip: This is right on Pearl St. so maybe you can schedule your visit to coincide with lunch and check out all that Pearl St. has to offer! HR will also take a photo for your ID badge. If you are a salaried employee, you will also receive an Eco Pass So do what you need to do to get that hair higher and that smile wider! Salaried employees will also be scheduled by Human Resources for your all day New Hire Orientation which are usually held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month Tip: This is another opportunity to have lunch and explore all that Pearl St. has to offer! Have a conversation with your supervisor and develop your plan for week one Tip: Your relationship with your new supervisor will be built through a series of conversations. Tour your division s facility with your supervisor or designated co-worker. Make note of the restrooms, break rooms and supply closets. Tip: Pay special attention to the location of the kitchen area- you ll want to know where you might find pastries or donuts. On your tour, meet available co-workers and make note of their roles. when Tip: You can get an org chart from your supervisor/manager which is immensely helpful learning everyone s names and roles. Don t forget to write down your office phone number and set up your greeting, voice mail, etc. Determine where you should park and if you need any special documentation pr permit Do you have necessary building access? Is your access card available and working? Be sure to login to your computer using the LAN ID provided.

4 First Week Need anything for your office? After you check the supply closet, ask your supervisor about the process for ordering supplies. Do you have business cards and a name placard yet? If not, ask your supervisor or department buddy about the ordering process. Fill out your MySite profile on InsideBC. Check with your department buddy about what type of info to include. Review the Division Disaster Preparedness plan. All preparedness plans are located on the Community Services website Tip: You ll hear the term SharePoint when people refer to documents on the website. That s the software on the internal site that allows us to upload documents for everyone to access, submit admin work requests and facilitate many other useful things. Take time, either formally or informally, to get to know the people you will be working with regularly Ask your supervisor how to record your time and how you will receive your first paycheck. Sustainability is a high priority in Boulder County and in the Community Services Department. You will find receptacles throughout your office area to dispose of compostable material (green), recycling (blue) and the smallest for trash.. there are handy posters along with the container to assit you and properly sorting waste, paper and trash. Second Week Discuss department culture, norms, and style with your supervisor and peers Ask how does our supervisor prefer to communicate with you e.g. , phone, or in-person conversations? Find out what meetings are required for you to attend and when they are held.

5 First Month Go on line and complete the Passport to Community Services checklist form. Passport activities must be completed within nine months of of your hire date. Within the first six months of your employment, you must complete the HR1001 Orientation to Diversity and Cultural Awareness training. Go ahead and sign up for a class now so you don t forget.
