STUDENT 'LEARNING JOURNEY' Students will take two -credit compulsory modules (HUM4000 and HUM4002), the -creditdissertation module (HUM40) and four option modules ( credits each). The distinctiveness of the programme is ensured by a degree of differentiation in provision and assessment on HUM4000 and HUM4002; by the dissertation module HUM40; by the selection of option modules, negotiated with the Programme Leader; and by the availability of HUM4050, History Independent Study. The exact semester dates may vary slightly from year to year, but there will always be a break of a of two weeks between modules in order to allow students sufficient time for research, reflection and writing.
5 22aii. Student Learning Journey 23. LEARNING AND TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES The philosophy which underpins MA History and Culture is a desire to provide students with a learning experience that encourages and stimulates their intellectual curiosity; supports their development as autonomous scholars and individuals; challenges them intellectually and personally; stresses the benefits and opportunities afforded by an interdisciplinary ethos; and equips them with the necessary skills and abilities to engage with lifelong learning, study and enquiry, and to compete successfully for a wide variety of employment. MA History and Culture will normally be delivered through three-hour campus-based group sessions, open to full-time and part-time students. Full-time students will normally attend two three-hour group sessions per week and part-time students one three-hour group session per week. These group sessions will be supported by VLE provision, tutorials, online discussion and independent research promoting autonomous learning. Blackboard will be used as an additional support for modules, and a number of modules make use of online discussion to extend students' engagement beyond the classroom. Delivery of modules will involve a range of teaching and learning strategies. The programme deliberately employs a variety of approaches in order to provide a stimulating and challenging experience for students. Lectures will, through presentations by a subject specialist, be used to transmit knowledge and understanding; to help students to appreciate the different critical and scholarly approaches that have been developed in the humanities; to provide a synthesis of the diverse concepts and ideas with which students will be expected to engage; and to provide a base from which students will be expected to develop their own original and independent scholarly positions. Seminars will, through general and small-group discussion facilitated by the seminar tutor, enable students to develop subject-specific skills, clarify concepts, raise questions, engage with theoretical ideas and identify trends and patterns. Seminars will, through directed discussion and analysis of primary, secondary and critical sources, assist students in the progression from undergraduate to postgraduate study and will enhance students' self-directed learning. Intellectual and subject-specific skills will be further developed through online tasks and students' independent engagement with relevant module materials on Blackboard. Seminars will form the basis for subsequent investigation and/or coursework assessment and will be linked to Blackboard to which students will be encouraged to turn for subsequent activity, online discussion, and post-seminar support. Through seminar discussions, online discussion, tutorials and Blackboard, students will
6 demonstrate their overall progress in skills development, knowledge and understanding, together with their current degree of independence. Independent learning strategies will be usedto supplement lectures and seminars. These will take various forms including directed reading of module primary and secondary texts and structured research or archival activities. The typical volume of assessment on the taught modules of the programme is 4 per credits. A -minute presentation typically equates to 1. However, the exact requirements and weightings take into account the nature of, and relationship between, assessment tasks and the effort required to complete them. Formative assessment tasks typically carry a lower weighting than end-of-module summative assignments. 24. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Formative assessment is an important learning strategy on the programme and is deployed to ensure that all students receive early feedback on their coursework and understanding. Formative assessment operates in three ways: through informal, unassessed seminar work; through regular online discussions or critical diary entries, building gradually to a portfolio of work, used on a number of modules and typically graded Pass/ Fail; and through assessed coursework carrying a low weighting and designed to secure early feedback before the submission of the major assignment. Seminar work could be construed as constituting formative assessment, as modules are always designed to inform the work later produced for summative assessment. s will provide specific formative experiences in preparation for forthcoming summative assessment. Students will benefit from the directed study of primary and secondary source materials prior to assessment due dates. Non-formal feedback may also be given in response to draft plans of particular assessments or short unassessed presentations which act as a means of providing formative feedback. On a number of modules, students will be required to participate in regular online discussions on set topics. These discussions will involve the week's reading, or may set students limited research or reading tasks which they will then have to report on via the discussion facility on the VLE. The tasks will be designed to improve students' knowledge and understanding, help them interact with one another, and gain them early formative feedback on their work and ideas. The module leader will moderate the discussion facility and guide student work. The assessment strategy also specifically seeks to provide students with formative mid-module feedback in response to early assignments. In many cases, early assignments carrying a low weighting act as direct preparation for the module's main assignment (e.g. a research proposal/ research essay, or abstract/ conference paper). Students will be assisted in the completion of their summative assessment by clear guidance from module tutors, and will have the opportunity to discuss the relevant Learning Outcomes with their tutor and determine how best to meet those Learning Outcomes through their coursework. Tutors will be available for consultation on assignments.students will be encouraged to reflect on, and respond to, their feedback, with the intention of identifying their academic strengths and addressing areas requiring further development. 25.
