China s fast growing economy brings with it enormous potentials for legal professionals around the globe. As law students here in America struggle to find summer internships or permanent employment, China s vast legal market may present the answer many are looking for. If you answer the questions we asked at the beginning in the positive, look no further: the 2010 China Law Firms Summer Internship Program (the Program ) provides American law school students with the unique opportunity of obtaining valuable internship experience at China s top law firms. PROGRAM DATES This Program will be held from May 23 to June 18, PROGRAM SPONSORS The Program is co-sponsored by the US- China Legal Exchange Foundation (UCLEF), a New Jersey-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of communication and cooperation between Chinese and American legal professionals, and Beijing Open University Law and Business School (BJOU), which is one of China s oldest Universities, located in Beijing. The US-China Legal Exchange Foundation (UCLEF) is a non-profit educational and professional organization located in New Jersey, USA. For the purpose of promoting professionalism, education, civilization and cooperation, UCLEF is dedicated, among other things, to the following principal activities: strengthening legal information exchange and cultural communication between China and the U.S.; promoting cooperation among legal scholars and practitioners from China and the U.S.; supporting and undertaking independent legal research, education, and training; initiating and developing public forums, conferences, and seminars concerning relevant Chinese and U.S. legal issues; undertaking and assisting in publishing activities in connection with legal research and education; and providing legal aid and public-interest-oriented programs to the public in China and the U.S. Programs/activities run by UCLEF include, but not limited to, the following: Chinese Lawyer Advanced Training Program partnered with Fordham Law School July 2009 Outstanding Chinese Law Students Visiting Program February 2010 China Law Firms Summer Internship Program May

3 International Conference on Trust Law August 2010 Chinese Lawyers Visiting Delegation to the U.S. October 2010 UCLEF is playing a significant role in bridging and advancing the legal communication and cooperation between China and the U.S. For more information about UCLEF, please visit Beijing Open University (BJOU) Law and Business School is a vocational school aiming to educate law and business professionals and satisfy social needs of practitioners in the fields of law and business. In 2009, Law and Business School organized the Practical Training Program for outstanding Chinese law school students. These training courses are highly appreciated by All China Lawyers Association (ACLA) and Beijing Lawyers Association. Till now, all students attending this program are employed by top-ranking law firms in China. Meanwhile, Law and Business School is selected by China s top ten law firms to be the professional training school for their prospective associates. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM The Program consists of two parts: Chinese Business Law Training and Internship at Top Law Firms. The program participants also have the opportunities to visit various legislative and judicial organizations in China. Part 1: Chinese Business Law Training For the first week, the participants will attend a series of training courses on the practice of China s Business Law, including China s Corporation Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities Law, Bankruptcy Law, Intellectual Property Law as well as Law Firm Operation and Practice Management in China. All courses will be taught in Chinese, interpretation/translation will be provided. The course schedule is attached in Appendix 1. These courses are the most practical and valuable among law practice courses in China. The participants will have the opportunity to learn lawyering skills and many other related practical legal knowledge in China. These training courses will be taught by distinguished Chinese lawyers. Part 2: Internship at China s Top Law Firms The Program participants will have the opportunity to conduct a 3-week internship at one top Chinese law firm after completing the first week of training course. The host law firms are top law firms in China, located in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi an. Selected hosting law firms include: 1. Beijing Sino-American Tianlu Intellectual Property Agent Co., Ltd ( y=qyjjoa&currentculture=en-us) Beijing Sino-American Tianlu Intellectual Property Agent Co., Ltd, (hereinafter referred to as Sino-American Tianlu ) a company incorporated and existing under the laws of the People's Republic of China, and is certified by the Trademark Office of the administrative department for industry and commerce under the State Council of China, as having the qualification for agency of trademark, copyrights, patent and other intellectual property matters. Meanwhile, Sino- American Tianlu is the legal consultant of Chinese Trademark Association; China Intellectual Property Research Society; Executive Director of Chinese Intellectual Property Society; Copyright Society of China ; Chinese Institute of Publishing Science and China Publish Network. The total number of active trademark records has exceeded 7000 since Sino- American Tianlu has been incorporated. Its IP management system has capacity for multiple clients to protect and enhance their intellectual property rights. 8 PROGRAM FEES The program fee is $1600 US dollars, which covers tuition, course materials, and events expenses. Working lunches will be provided for by the hosting law firms. Please note that the Program fee does not cover the round trip airfare between USA and China, fees related to tours and domestic airfare in China. *Program participants shall sign a liability waiver form once their applications are approved and tuition is due. APPLICATION 1. Students enrolled in the J.D., LLM, or JSD programs of an ABA-accredited U.S. law school are eligible to register for this program. 2. A $50 application fee is required. Please transfer the payment in US currency through a US bank. Please do NOT send cash or traveler s check by mail. 9 4. A deposit in the amount of $500 is due by April 25, 2010 if you request a GW202; if you request housing, an additional $300 deposit is due with the housing application. The deposit is non-refundable and will count toward the total fee amount of the Program. 5. UCLEF will provide admitted students with all necessary visa materials after receipt of the deposit, all documentations and the photo. 6. Full payment of all tution and fees is due by May 10, *A $200 fee will be applied to outstanding accounts after May 10, All checks should be made payable to the US-China Legal Exchange Foundation. *Please note that UCLEF is not responsible for any property damage, loss, personal injury (including death) or any other fees or expenses arising out of any legal proceedings related to the Program. *The Program Sponsors reserve the right to cancel or reschedule the Program if there is insufficient enrollment.
