3 SCHOLARSHIP HANDBOOK DISTRIBUTION The Pensacola State College Scholarship Handbook contains information about scholarships awarded by Pensacola State College. The information contained in this book includes each scholarship s eligibility criteria, application procedures, deadlines, awards, and point of contact. The Pensacola State College Scholarship Handbook is for information ONLY and is subject to change as promulgated by Pensacola State College District Board of Trustees and the Pensacola State College Scholarship Policy Committee. 4 PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION 1. General Scholarship Information: a. The President's Scholarship, the Two Plus Two (2 + 2) UFIFAS, and the Academic Excellence Scholarship will be two year awards (two consecutive academic years). b. All other scholarships will be for a defined period of time, which may be up to one academic year. 2. Scholarship Eligibility: a. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. All scholarship applicants must have a completed Application for Admission to Pensacola State College on file with the Admissions Office. Students who have been attending Pensacola State College under the high school dual enrollment program must file a new admissions application upon graduation from high school. b. The Financial Aid/Scholarships Office is required to assess each scholarship recipient s financial need. Before receiving a Pensacola State College Academic Merit scholarship award, scholarship applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), submit it to the federal processor and inform the Financial Aid/Scholarships Office when they receive their Student Aid Report. c. Individuals who have completed an Associates or higher degree or have attempted or completed a total of 65 college credits or more are not eligible. d. Current high school seniors who submit a Pensacola State College Scholarship Application prior to their high school graduation must attach an official copy of their high school transcript showing all work completed through the first semester of grade 12. Upon graduation from high school, students must provide an official final copy of their high school transcript to the Pensacola State College Admissions Office. Failure to provide this copy may result in the application not being considered for available scholarships. Some scholarships require the grade point average to be based on academic courses only. Refer to the minimum selection criterion s paragraph in each scholarship listing for specific information. ACT or SAT scores, although not required, should be provided, as test scores may be used to determine eligibility for some scholarships. All home educated students must provide official documentation of registration with the district for grades 11 and 12; and either a minimum score of 520 computation and 521 verbal on the SAT; or a minimum score of 19 English, 20 Math, and 22 Reading on the ACT; or a minimum Reading 104, Writing 99, and Math 123 PERT test scores. This documentation must be on file with the college Admissions/Registrar Office. 4

5 e. If a scholarship applicant's high school graduation date is less than 10 years prior to the beginning date of the fall term, AND the applicant has not completed at least 12 college or vocational credits, the applicant must submit to the Pensacola State College Admissions Office an official copy of their high school transcript. For Pensacola State College scholarship purposes, selection consideration will be based on the high school grade point average. High school dual enrollment courses are considered in the high school GPA until at least 12 credits beyond the high school graduation. f. If a scholarship applicant's high school graduation date is more than 10 years prior to the beginning date of the fall term, applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 college prep, college or vocational credits at Pensacola State College and/or other college(s). The combined GPA from Pensacola State College and/or the other colleges will be used to determine the cumulative GPA. g. If a scholarship applicant has completed 12 or more college or vocational semester credits at Pensacola State College and has not attended other colleges or universities, the applicant submits only the Pensacola State College Scholarship Application to the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office. For Pensacola State College scholarship selection purposes high school dual enrollment credits are not calculated in the totals for credits attempted and Pensacola State College GPA. h. If a scholarship applicant has completed 12 or more college or vocational credits at Pensacola State College and/or other college(s), the applicant must submit to the Pensacola State College Admissions Office an official copy of the college transcript(s) from the other college(s). The combined GPA from all colleges will be used to determine the cumulative. i. A student who has scored a 3000 or higher on the General Education Development Exam (GED) may be eligible to apply for the GED Excellence Scholarship. (See pages 25-26). j. Recipients of Pensacola State College Academic Merit Scholarships must enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 semester credit hours each term (fall and spring). Courses for which a student is enrolled must be completed (grades received - no withdrawals) by the end of the regular examination period for that term. Incomplete grades ("I") will not count toward the 12 credits. k. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. Students on academic warning, probation, suspension, suspension waiver or have other restrictions are not eligible for a Pensacola State College scholarship. (Refer to Standards of Academic Progress outlined in the Pensacola State College Catalog.) l. An appeal for an exception to the scholarship policies may be submitted to the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office. The appeal must be in writing with a full explanation and documentation. The Director of Financial Aid or Scholarship Coordinator will either approve or deny the appeal. If the appeal is denied, it will be forwarded to the Pensacola State College Scholarship Policy Committee for consideration at their next scheduled committee meeting. 5

6 NOTE: It is the student s responsibility to ensure that all required documents are requested and received by the Pensacola State College Admissions Office and the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office as required by the published deadlines. 3. Pensacola State College Academic and Non-Academic scholarship deadline dates are strictly enforced, unless stated otherwise in a specific scholarship program. DEADLINES FOR CONSIDERATION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Fall term - on or before May 1, close of business Spring term - on or before November 1, close of business Summer term - on or before March 1, close of business If the deadline date listed falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, applications will be accepted on the following business day. 8 ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE COMPETITION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AMOUNT: NUMBER OF AWARDS: LENGTH OF AWARD: ENROLLMENT REQUIRED: SELECTION MADE BY: POINT OF CONTACT: TERMINATION: $1,600 per year One scholarship per department sponsoring a competition Two years Minimum 12 credits each Fall and Spring Terms Each Year Pensacola State College Academic Department Pensacola State College Academic Department Head End of Spring Term of Second Year DESCRIPTION: A two year scholarship is awarded by each Academic Department or sponsor who conducts an Academic Excellence competition in their respective academic discipline, i.e. Visual Arts, Physical Sciences, Music and Theatre, and Academic Programs. Recipients may be required to major in the academic discipline or topic in which they competed. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Candidates must be current high school seniors who will enroll in Pensacola State College the following fall term. 2. The selected senior must have a minimum, cumulative high school, unweighted grade point average of 3.0 in academic course work. 3. The selected senior must complete a Pensacola State College Scholarship Application and provide an official copy of their high school transcript at the time of the competition and before selection is confirmed. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 1. Departments will determine their departmental competition, procedures, and criteria, and distribute this information to the local high schools to solicit student participation. 2. After the competition is held, the department head will submit to the Pensacola State College Vice President for Academic Affairs Office the names and required documentation of the selected students by April 1. The students documents will be reviewed, and final confirmation of eligibility must come from the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/ Scholarships Office before the departments notify the students of their selection. 3. Before receiving a Pensacola State College Academic Merit Scholarship award, scholarship applicants must accurately complete and submit to the federal processor the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Pensacola State College school code The Financial Aid/Scholarships Office is required to assess each scholarship recipient s financial need using the results of the FAFSA, as required by the state of Florida. 8

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained throughout the academic year, each year. 2. Recipient must enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 semester credit hours each term (fall and spring, each year). Courses for which a student is enrolled must be completed (grades received - no withdrawals) by the end of the regular examination period for that term. Incomplete grades ( I ) will not count toward the 12 credits. 3. Recipient may be required to major in the academic discipline in which they competed. 10 ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA (AKA) SORORITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AMOUNT: $1,600 each award NUMBER OF AWARDS: One scholarship LENGTH OF AWARD: One academic year - Fall and Spring Terms (maximum) ENROLLMENT REQUIRED: Minimum 12 credits each Fall and Spring Terms SELECTION MADE BY: AKA Sorority Selection Committee POINT OF CONTACT: Cheryl Powell, (850) TERMINATION: End of Spring Term DESCRIPTION: A one academic year scholarship is awarded to the person nominated by the AKA Sorority Selection Committee. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Must be a debutante in the AKA Sorority with good academic standing. 2. Must have minimum of 3.0 cumulative, unweighted high school grade point average for high school academic course work. 3. Pass the PERT. 4. Must score at least five out of a possible eight on the Essay Writing Test. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 1. Contact the AKA Sorority Coordinator listed above. 2. Once the winner is selected, the AKA Sorority Coordinator will contact the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office, who in turn, will contact the winner by mail with all the necessary information. 3. Before receiving a Pensacola State College Academic Merit Scholarship award, scholarship applicants must accurately complete and submit to the federal processor the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Pensacola State College school code The Financial Aid/Scholarships Office is required to assess each scholarship recipient s financial need using the results of the FAFSA, as required by the state of Florida. 12 HONORS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AMOUNT: Varies NUMBER OF AWARDS: Varies LENGTH OF AWARD: By semester, not to exceed two academic years SELECTION MADE BY: Honors Steering Committee POINT OF CONTACT: Dr. Charles Schuler, TERMINATION: Academic ineligibility or termination of the award's duration DESCRIPTION: The Pensacola State College Honors Program offers academically gifted students an integrated program of study that examines the relationships between the arts and sciences. Besides the classroom experience, students participate in seminars, field trips, scholarships and study abroad programs. The Honors Scholarship is primarily designed to augment partial scholarships. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Acceptance into the Honors Program 2. Additional requirements Must have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 as reported by the high school at the end of first semester senior year and be eligible to enroll in ENC 1101, MAC 1105 and have no reading requirement OR ACT Reading - minimum of 23 English - minimum of 23 Math - minimum of 23 OR SAT Verbal (Reading/English) - minimum of 550 Quantitative (Math) - minimum of 550 APPLICATION PROCEDURES: Complete the Honors Program application, which includes the Honors Scholarship application form. Eligibility criteria to maintain the scholarship within the awarded academic year: Recipient must enroll in and complete a minimum of 3 credit hours each term (fall and spring). The student must maintain an overall 3.2 cumulative grade point average and participate in Robinson Honors meetings and scholastic activities. 12

NOTE: Students claiming American Indian status must provide official tribal documentation. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Student must have a minimum cumulative, unweighted high school grade point average of 3.0 (grades 9-12). 2. Other requirements set forth by the high school principal. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 1. Interested students should contact their high school principal. Escambia County and Santa Rosa County high school principals are provided a package with information and applications. 2. Prior to applying for the scholarship, the student must apply for admission to the college by completing the Pensacola State College Admissions Application and Residence Statement, and schedule any needed placement testing. 3. If selected by the high school principal, the student will complete a Pensacola State College Scholarship Application. The completed Scholarship Application and an official copy of the student's high school transcript showing all work completed through the first semester of grade 12 must be returned to the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office via the high school principal no later than April 1, close of business. If that date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, documents will be accepted the following business day. 4. Students claiming American Indian Status must provide official tribal documentation. 5. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Applicants with fewer than 12 completed college or vocational credit hours must have a minimum cumulative, unweighted high school grade point average of 3.0 (grades 9-12) and have graduated from high school within the last 10 years. 2. Applicants who graduated from high school more than 10 years ago or received a GED must have 12 or more completed college prep, college or vocational credit hours at Pensacola State College and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of Applicants who have completed 12 or more college or vocational credit hours at Pensacola State College must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Applicants who have attended another college(s) or university must provide an official transcript(s) from all colleges previously attended. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: Students are considered on the basis of academic merit; generally, a 3.0 minimum grade point average is required. High school principals, counselors, Pensacola State College faculty and staff, Scholarship Office, or members of the community usually recommend candidates. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 1. Determined by the President. 2. The President's office will confirm in writing the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office with the name of the recipient and forward it to the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office. The recipient will be contacted by the Pensacola State College Financial Aid/Scholarships Office to complete the necessary paperwork. 3. Recipient will complete a Pensacola State College Scholarship Application and Acceptance/Criteria letter upon notification of selection. 4. Before receiving a Pensacola State College Academic Merit Scholarship award, scholarship applicants must accurately complete and submit to the federal processor the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Pensacola State College school code The Financial Aid/Scholarships Office is required to assess each scholarship recipient s financial need using the results of the FAFSA, as required by the state of Florida. Eligibility criteria to maintain the scholarship within the awarded academic year: 1. No grade below "B" in any course after award of scholarship. 2. Recipient must enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 semester credit hours each term (fall and spring). Courses for which a student is enrolled must be completed (grades received - no withdrawals) by the end of the regular examination period for that term. Incomplete grades ( I ) will not count toward the 12 credits. 17

The scholarship begins with the fall term immediately following high school graduation. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Student must have a minimum cumulative, unweighted high school grade point average of 3.0 (grades 9-12). 2. Other requirements set forth by the high school principal. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: 1.
