8 trendbenders In today s challenging health care industry, trendbenders are leaders who understand what they cannot control and take action to control what they can. Consider these key trends discovered in the 2011 Physician Retention Survey sponsored by Cejka Search and the American Medical Group Association: Part Time Practice Continues to Grow Since 2005, the part-time workforce has more than doubled. This trend tracks with changes in the profi le of today s medical workforce, in which the two fastest growing segments are female physicians entering the practice and male physicians approaching retirement. Workforce Changes Impact Profile of Medical Practices Respondents profi le was 62% male and 38% female, which appears to be somewhat representative of the general physician population, although possibly skewed toward greater female representation. The results mirror the workforce trends, reporting a growing number of female physicians working within the responding medical groups. Notably, in the under 35 category, the number of female physicians exceeds that of male physicians. The trend is expected to continue, as the 2011 distribution of medical school graduates is 52% male and 48% female. Flexible Work Options Make a Difference in Reducing Turnover Flexible work options have become more prevalent, with 75% of groups reporting that they offer a four-day full-time work week. Involvement of Advanced Practitioners More than two-thirds (67%) of the respondents reported the involvement of advanced practitioners in their groups has grown somewhat or signifi cantly in the past fi ve years. Respondents also indicated they identifi ed 21% and 13% growth in new positions, respectively, for physician assistants and nurse practitioners in their groups in the past twelve months. Evolution of Care Teams As it relates to teamwork qualities, as compared with fi ve years ago, no respondents stated it is less important - and 84% said teamwork qualities were somewhat more or signifi cantly more important.
