1 M in the Box We are pleased to announce a new medication communication practice called M In The Box that Covenant Nursing staff has adopted (look for the red square box on the new glass-covered white communication boards in all patient rooms). This is a national best practice Covenant has adopted as part of our patient safety and nursing excellence communication initiatives. What is "M" in the Box? A new method for teaching patients about their medications and side effects Done during Bedside Shift Report Utilizes the Best Care Communication board Process: When a new medication is ordered, the nurse will place an M in the box on the best care communication board When M is placed in the box, nurse will explain the new medication uses, side effects and any other pertinent information May 20, 2013 South Plains Kidney Foundation Walk n Roll Saturday, June 1, K Walk / 5K Run Henry Huneke Park nd Street Sign in begins at 7:30 a.m. Walk/Run starts 8:15 a.m. Registration Fees: only $30 (Donation accepted) Please join our Covenant team us on this walk/run to: -bring awareness to chronic kidney disease -encourage early detection -raise funds for education, outreach, and patients assistance Walk/Run with us, visit vendor and health screening booths, enjoy our guest speaker Mayor Glen Robertson, goodie bags, raffle prizes, and more. To register or get more details, contact Veronica Covenant The nurse will then use the teach-back method to have the patient explain what they have just learned At the next shift report, the oncoming nurse (having noted the M in the box) will acknowledge with the patient that a new medication has been ordered and ask the patient what they remember about the medication Once the nurse feels the patient understands the information about the medication, she/he will erase the M in the box The process will continue with every new medication ordered until patient discharge Why use M in the Box? Research has proven that patients have lower readmission rates when they are educated about their medications Patients have a right and need to know their medications and possible side effects It has also been proven that education about medications increases HCAHPS Patient Experience scores (Specifically in Medication and Nurse-Patient Communication) IT IS WHAT S BEST FOR OUR PATIENTS!! Reflection Don't cry because it's over, smile because it -Dr. Seuss happened. Remember: Covenant Employees can show their name badge ANY day of the week and $1 of the car wash will go towards Covenant Children s. 4 MEDITECH EMR REFRESHER Over the past few years, we ve made impressive strides toward clinical performance improvement by leveraging best practices from our staff. We ve seen the benefits of this work in the quality of care we provide to our patients. Now, Information Sophistication is laying the technological foundation to leverage best practices from across the System so we can offer our patients a truly integrated network with fewer clinical errors, increased efficiency and improved outcomes. As a first step toward Information Sophistication, we are asking all clinical staff to take a brief, 15 minute MEDITECH EMR Refresher elearning course on HealthStream to brush up on skills that are a prerequisite for training on the Standardized MEDITECH system. Below are instructions for accessing this required training: Step One: Go to HealthStream under the Education section on the CareNet homepage. Step Two: Login with your Employee ID number (6 digits); your password is comply Step Three: In HealthStream, go to the My Learning section Step Four: Click on the blue MEDITECH EMR Refresher link to begin the training. Completing this training is a first step toward ensuring a successful, minimally disruptive migration to our new system and, ultimately, the best outcomes for our patients. Thank you for your continued support of Information Sophistication! For more information about Information Sophistication, visit: Questions?
