Recommended! Notes: The AutoUpdate job checks for updates after all nightly jobs are complete Once the AutoUpdate begins, no new jobs will be started, but will be added to the queue. Queued jobs will start when AutoUpdate finishes or fails Automatic Update Options Three Intervals: Daily, Weekly, Monthly (and Never) Default Interval: Weekly Notify me mode will check for new versions and display a notice that a new update is available at the top of the window. Following the link will allow the user to download and start the install process. 6 2

3 Upgrade Considerations Please verify your current version If automatic upgrades are turned on, then after nightly jobs complete, Core will be upgraded Otherwise Target Always upgrade Target Core First If replicating TO Target, pause replication on Primary (source) Core If Target site is also protecting machines, pause protection Upgrade Target Core Agent - ALWAYS a three step process! Install the Agent software Reboot the system Protect Machine Above steps must occur in sequence but not at the same time If you can t reboot after install, in the Settings uncheck protect machine after reboot and then you can uncheck reboot machine after installation). 6 Operating System Support New Windows Operating System Support Adding support for protecting the following operating systems: Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows 8.1 New Linux Operating System Support Adding support for protecting the following operating systems: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 CentOS UEFI Support Expanded coverage to protect, recover, and export UEFI Virtual Export to Microsoft Hyper-V Generation 2 VMs. Supports Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware, Secure Boot, SCSI boot, and network boot support via PXE AppAssure adds the option to perform virtual export to this new virtual machine type for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 hosts Only protected machines with the following UEFI operating systems offer virtual export to Hyper-V generation 2: Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2 17 UEFI Support Expanded coverage to protect, recover, and export UEFI UEFI partitions are treated as simple FAT32 volumes. Incremental transfers are fully supported. AppAssure 5.4 provides BMR support for UEFI systems, including automatic partitioning on GPT disks. Due to limitations resulting from lack of FAT32 support on operating system side, the following features are not supported: Delta rollback. Entire volume is always rewritten during rollback. Live rollback/rollback on running machine. Windows uses UEFI partitions as system partitions so URC should be used for UEFI rollback. UEFI partitions on MBR disks are not supported. Windows cannot boot from MBR UEFI partitions 18 6

11 Replication Multi-Target Replication With multi-target replication support, AppAssure 5.4 can replicate from a single core to multiple target core servers. For example: a->b and a->c. Chained Replication In addition to standard core-tocore replication, AppAssure now supports multi-hop replication. For example: a -> b -> c 31 Replication Scheduled Replication Administrators can now schedule replication for each target core. Replication can be scheduled to run at 3 specific periods: At all times: replication is available anytime Daily: every day during specific time interval Custom: Separate time intervals for weekday and weekends Advanced Replication Settings Replication Throttling allows administrators to limit the speed of replication in bandwidth constrained environments. 32 Replication Sync Replication from Target - Force replication from the target Core - Show status of the source Core on the target Core, helping to identify if the source has been manually paused, or another problem exists - If replication was turned off on a primary Core, Administrator can turn it back on from the Target Core without accessing the primary Core Server 33 Maximum Replication Jobs - Maximum number of Incoming and Outgoing Jobs - Administrators can now specify the maximum number of outgoing (ReplicationJob) and incoming (RemoteReplicationJob) replication tasks. - Provides load balancing on target cores and improves general system performance. - Low bandwidth environments may require replication to be limited to one or two concurrent jobs, while larger bandwidth may allow more. 12 Configure Different Replication Retention Policies Disparate Retention Policies between Source and Target Cores Choose separate retention policies on both source and target cores Configure rollup on the target core, removing old unneeded RPs (recovery points). This results in different recovery point chains at both the target and source cores AppAssure tries to build RPs chain from newest RPs and if needed, missing RPs are added (excluding seed drive). This guarantees chain integrity on target It is possible to fix orphaned RPs which are located below of newest RPs simply force replication with option Fix orphans 34 Nightly Jobs Nightly Job Improvements Provide granular nightly jobs settings by agent. Each protected machine can have its own selection of nightly jobs Nightly Mount Check Optional feature to run a nightly mount check on the newest recovery point for each protection group. This setting can also be changed by advanced users to fine-tune the load on the core Minimum DCS is 1.5 GB, and cannot be greater than 50%of the physical RAM What is Deduplication Cache (DCS)? Memory used for deduplication Dedupe cache is loaded into the RAM when the Core starts, and remains until Core is stopped. Historically set at 1.5 GB Undersized DCS results in undeduplicated data, may cause other problems, such as rebasing Note: Changes to the DCS will not take effect until after the Core service is restarted. RAM usage will immediately be increased to the specified value
