2 Welcome to the Bristol Laser Centre We are part of the Plastic Surgery Department at North Bristol NHS Trust and were set up in 1992 as one of the first UK centres to offer skin laser treatments. We treat patients from all over the South West area, both private and NHS referrals. All our staff are fully trained doctors and nurses who have received specialist training in skin laser treatment. A variety of lasers are available for different skin conditions and we are able to treat babies and children, as well as adults. We also provide non-laser treatment via our camouflage clinic and Outlook clinic offering emotional support and counselling services. Laser Treatment for Unwanted Hair How does the treatment work? The laser works best on coarse dark hair within pale skin. The dark pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs the laser energy, which damages the root of the hair. Blond, light grey or fair hairs do not respond to laser treatment. People with very dark skin may not be suitable for treatment because of the amount of pigment in the skin. Hair growth has 3 stages, active growing, resting and shedding. The laser works on hairs that are in the active growing stage. As different hairs will be in different stages at different times, several treatments are needed to treat all the hairs effectively. 2 Laser treatment for the removal of unwanted hair

3 How successful is treatment? Laser is a control method that usually gives permanent reduction of hair. We recommend about 4-6 treatments initially, at approximately monthly intervals, to control hair growth. Most people then require top up treatments at longer intervals to keep the hair growth at a minimum. The majority of people have significant imporvement with reduction in the number and the coarseness of the hairs. A few people do not respond at all to laser hair treatment. What are the risks of treatment? Although the risk of any permanent scar is very small, there may be some skin pigment changes after treatment. This may appear as a light patch or a dark patch of skin. The risk of having a side effect is higher if you have treatment when you have a suntan. You must wear special glasses during treatment to protect your eyes. Who will treat me? At your first appointment the doctor will assess you and discuss treatment. This will give you a chance to consider all the factors involved. You may have a test treatment on the same day. Only doctors and laser nurse specialists will treat you. All clinicians using the laser have been fully trained in its use. Do I need a test treatment? Before beginning a course of treatment we need to know how your skin and hair will react to the laser. Small areas are treated at different powers to establish which power is safe and effective for you. Laser treatment for the removal of unwanted hair 3

4 How long does a treatment take? Several hairs can be treated with each laser shot. The treatment time depends on the size of the area treated. For example, the upper lip area may only take a few minutes, while the whole lower face and neck may take up to half an hour. How can I prepare for treatment? It is very important that your skin is as pale as possible before treatment. You should use sunblock on the area before treatment begins and during the course of treatment. You should not have a suntan or use sun beds, false tan or holiday skin moisturisers. If your skin is dry, use a plain moisturiser over the area. Your hair needs to be just visible to treat, so do not wax, pluck or have electrolysis for 6 weeks before treatment. Do not bleach hair for at least a month before treatment. You can shave or trim hair before treatment. Please wear white cotton underwear if you are having your bikini line treated. Some medication and herbal remedies make your skin more sensitive to lasers. Please bring a list of your medicines to your assessment and tell us each time your medication changes. Does treatment hurt? The laser may feel like a tingling or slight stinging sensation, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Many people say laser treatment is less painful than electrolysis or waxing. We use a cooling device on the skin during treatment, which makes treatment more comfortable. 4 Laser treatment for the removal of unwanted hair

5 What will happen after treatment? The treated area usually becomes red and may be slightly swollen immediately after treatment. This usually subsides within a few hours. You do not require dressings after treatment as the laser does not cut or burn your skin. You may find aloe vera gel (with no alcohol in the base) soothing after treatment. Your hair may feel stubbly after treatment and can take a few days to fall out. Are photographs necessary? We require photographs of the area to be treated before you start a course of treatment and at intervals during your treatment. This helps us to monitor your progress and any side effects of treatment. You can request a photographer of the same sex as yourself if you wish. Are there any alternatives to laser treatment? Hair can be removed by a variety of methods: trimming, shaving, waxing, sugaring, threading, plucking, electrolysis, or using depilatory creams. Dark hair can be bleached to make it less noticeable. How can I make an appointment? The Laser Centre offers both an NHS and private service. For NHS patients a referral letter from your GP or hospital consultant is required before an appointment can be arranged. A referral letter may not be necessary for private treatment. Some treatments are only available privately. Staff at the centre can give you further details. Laser treatment for the removal of unwanted hair 5
