1 THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES MGMT 3022 ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE OUTLINE No. of Credits: 3 Level: III Pre-Requisite(s): MGMT 1001 Introduction to Management, or SOCI Introduction to Sociology I, and MGMT 2008 Organisational Behaviour Course Description The objectives of this course are to evaluate the various theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of Organisation Development (O.D.); to develop participants skills in diagnosing problem areas, recommending and implementing appropriate strategies for change in organisations; to examine the various implications of change for the organisation and employees. Course Rationale In this course, participants will study Organization Development from the point of view of managers and consultants. The theoretical underpinnings of the subject will be studied but only to the extent that they give purpose and direction to practitioners. There are many definitions of Organization Development. But let us for the time being use the definition offered by Cummings and Worley, authors of the text that we will be using. It states: Organization Development is a system wide application and transfer of behavioral science knowledge to the planned development, improvement, and reinforcement of the strategies, structures and processes that lead to organization effectiveness. In this course participants will learn how this is accomplished in practice. Page 1 of 6
