1 Friends of Rock Creek s Environment Proposed Website Design Notes I. GENERAL APPEARANCE Use the Joomla template as starting point Simple, light, clean appearance Color scheme should be consistent with FORCE logo (the blue in the little geometric forms near the FORCE letters preferred) Use font similar to Obama s Make the web page full screen (no empty bars down the sides) Have the Donate Now module appear on each page Have the menu module repeat on each page so people can navigate the site [or just the top bar that has a Home tab?] Text on most pages should be succinct and fit on one screen so people don t have to scroll down A copy of a proposed Home page is attached.

TABS ACROSS TOP Home Self explanatory Your Rock Creek--Interactive This would be a chat room or blog for people to write about bird and animals, plants, fun things to do, park issues, share stories, etc. Need a volunteer to moderate it. Get Involved This page would encourage people to volunteer and identify specific volunteer opportunities Cross-reference to calendar listings FORCE committee membership opportunities, including name and of chairs Internships Our wish list (Volunteer Coordinator, Invasives Coordinator, Events Committee) Monitoring Report Pollution This would contain a list of contact information to report problems (pool draining, spills, etc.) in DC and MD. Take Action This would report on advocacy opportunities (hearings, opportunities to comment, proposed legislation. Donate Now This would identify a variety of giving opportunities (membership, gift memberships, corporate giving, planned giving, in kind donation opportunities, a wish list, and provide for online donations). It would include a link to a pdf of our IRS determination letter and latest 990, and a link to the volunteer page. We might also want a donor spotlight (a photo and bio about a recent donor and why they support FORCE). III. LEFT SIDE Menu Module Home About Rock Creek The Watershed (include history, natural and cultural resources) Threats (include solutions) Parks (links to park websites, maps) Resources and Links

3 Protect Rock Creek On Your Property (LID, pools, deicer, downspout disconnects, invasives, pet waste) In Your Community (adopt your storm drain, LID at school, church, etc.) In the Park (volunteer opportunities, pet waste, monitoring, etc.) For Families List of things to do with kids, links to park websites and calendars News In the News (RSS) Interactive (Volunteer to update?) (How would this work?) Newsletters News Archives Photo Gallery Interactive People post favorite photos using Flickr, (possibly with GPS data?) Volunteer to monitor or admin to approve photos is this worth it? About Us Mission and History (who we are and what we do) Board of Directors (with bios and photos and a private section for the board that would include minutes, policies, forms, etc.) Staff Partners Volunteers/Jobs Annual Reports Contact Us Survey Module --Interactive We could include survey questions that people could vote on (what do you enjoy doing in the park, what kind of educational programs would you be interested in, test people s knowledge of watershed issues in a serious or humorous way). This would need to change occasionally, perhaps monthly. Login This would be for people who post on or moderate portions of the website. IV. MIDDLE SECTION This would include news, educational information, a photo or video of volunteers and families, know your watershed, what you can do tips, advertise an event, etc. It would be great to have a cover photo that changes when the user refreshes the page. I would also like a box that takes people to an interactive google map, where people could do a google search with an address to see whether and where they are in the watershed.

4 Also, there is something that relates to Rock Creek in the news several times a week. It would be great to have a link to these stories. V. RIGHT SIDE Signup We need to capture s and incorporate them automatically. It would be easiest if they linked directly to etapestry, but we can also consider a bulk service. I am not sure how this would work. Constant Contact would charge $30 per month for 501 to 2,500 contacts, which would be cheaper than upgrading etapestry, but we would have to manage two systems. Donate Now (Put on upper right corner of every page) We would need to move Click & Pledge (or a similar service) to the new site. Calendar -- Interactive We need an interactive calendar that updates automatically. The name and date of the next few events should appear on the Home Page. It would be great if we could have one on which other people such as the Park Service, other watershed groups-- can post events (subject to admin approval) to keep spam off the calendar. There should be a way to indicate which are FORCE events. It needs to work on a Mac. (The current calendar works only on a PC.) Would the Google free calendar be an option? Link to Social Networking Sites We need to be able to link to Facebook, Twitter, perhaps others. Consider an to a Friend feature. VI. OTHER ISSUES Spam. How to avoid spam if website becomes more interactive. . I believe that our currently goes through the old website. (beth@friendsofrockcreek.org.) I would like to be able to create new accounts that we can use: info@friendsofrockcreek.org, board@friendsofrockcreek.org, and accounts for any new interns or employees or board members that want them. I also want to make sure we don t lose beth@friendsofrockcreek.org. Mac vs. PC. The new website, including the calendar, has to be fully operational on both. RSS. Not sure how this works, but it is a way to update news automatically.

5 Event Registration. It would be nice to have the capacity for people to sign up for events through the website. I don t know how this would work or whether it could work seamlessly with etapestry. Privacy Policy. Maybe we can use the one from our old website.
