1 COURSE OUTLINE Spring 2009 / GRD204: Web Design Presentation Faculty: Dennis Anderson and Faye Lourenso INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS (same as Fall 2008 GRD203) STUDENT REQUIREMENTS Lectures and demonstrations. Assigned projects and readings with exercises. Critique and development of students portfolios. REQUIRED: The Graphic Designer's Guide to Portfolio Design, 2nd edition, by Devvie Rose Myers Recommended: Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual by Matthew MacDonald CSS: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland Flash CS3: The Missing Manual by E.A. Vander Veer and Chris Grover A. Two classes are held most weeks. You will be expected to prepare and produce for both faculty members. Producing web pages has a process no matter what the software is. Time management and organization will be extemely important for you as you plan, design and manage all the parts and pieces of every project. B. Students must attend all classes, arrive on time, and stay for the full session. During the semester ONE absence will be permitted, after which further absences will reduce a student s final grade. (Three absences will result in the loss of one letter grade. Four absences will be considered cause for withdrawing/failing the student from the course.) Two late arrivals are considered one absence. C. Students who withdraw from the course must do so in accordance with the college policy to request a W/D as a final grade. Otherwise, unauthorized withdrawal from the course will result in a grade of F. D. All assigned projects must be completed, presented professionally, and handed in as per the professor s instructions on its due date. Presentation is an important part of sharing and reviewing one s work. A grade of F will be given to any project not presented and handed in on its due date. E. NO COURSE INCOMPLETES WILL BE GIVEN (see Grading Criteria 2). All grades are averaged and weighed by the grading criteria. An A for a final grade will not be given if a project/paper is missing from the grading criteria. F. You are expected to read all the assigned readings and complete all assigned exercises from the textbooks and handouts. Most of these exercises will have to be read and completed outside of class as class time will be to explore the exercises more. Also the assigned textbooks are expected to be with you in every class as reference manuals. You will be required to use open lab time, a minimum of three hours a week, working on projects and exercises to understand software requirements. G. If you are unable to attend class, you are responsible of contacting the professor of your absence. It is also your responsibility to get the assignment due in to the professor before week s end and receive any supplementary instructions that were given in class for the next assignment from a fellow classmate, not the professor. H. Expect the unexpected. If you have an assignment due on Tuesday, try to get it done a few days before. That way, if and when you are having technical problems, you will have some extra time to fix mistakes and troubleshoot. Remember: It is always better to show what you are working on than to show nothing at all. We can try to solve the problem(s) in class if necessary. 2 I. Respect for the property and others in the classroom. Student conduct policy for this course prohibits the following behaviors: a) eating or drinking in class; b) excessive or distracting conversation; c) use of computer, mouse or keyboard during lecture; d) unauthorized use of computer equipment; e) academic dishonesty on any test, research, or course work; f) destruction, unauthorized transfer or alteration of files; and g) disruption of class by use of cellular phones, audible beepers, instant messaging and watching video files from the Internet. In accordance with College policy, any student guilty of the above may be receive a failing grade, be dismissed from the class, and/or be referred for further discipline proceedings. J. Retain all work completed through the semester for an end-of-the-semester portfolio review. A graphic design portfolio review is required of all majors in their final semester before graduation. The projects from GRD203 will be fine-tuned and explored further in GRD204 along with a completion of an electronic portfolio. GRADING CRITERIA 1. Graphic design is a deadline-oriented business. In industry you are not able to tell a client is work is not finished by its due date. Therefore, any project not presented on its due date will receive a grade of F. 2. NO COURSE INCOMPLETES WILL BE GIVEN. All the assignments and projects performed in GRD203 and GRD204 have an impact on all the assignments and projects. The schedule time frame for each assignment and exercise has been carefully selected. Failure to complete an assignment or project in the schedule time frame, a grade of 0 will be averaged with all other semester s assignment and project grades. 3. Attendance, punctuality, attitude and participation in class warrants points in the final average. All assignments and exercises are discussed at the beginning of the class and several are expected to be completed before the end of class. Throughout the semester, peer presentations of your projects/assignments will be important. If you are late, not in class, or do not present, a grade of 0 will be averaged with all other semester s assignment and project grades. 5. All courses in graphic design must be completed with a C or better to graduate. Grades are valued with the following scale: A B C D F Excellent; means objectives of the assignment are fully understood as applied to the particular assignment and an intriquing balance exists between clear communication of the message and creativity. The assignment is executed with impeccable craftsmanship, accuracy, and neatness. The assignment exists as part of the complete design development. A quality piece of work. Above Average; objectives are met and design principles are a good solution. May be lacking in overall design quality, craftsmanship, clarity, type usage or design development. Good overall effort. Adequate; the minimum requirements of the assignment have been met but not exceeded. Extra effort and insight into development of the basic assignment are necessary to produce higher quality work. Undeveloped; there exist problems in completely understanding the concept or objectives of an assignment. Incompleteness in several areas of craftsmanship, design, creativity, clarity, or development is apparent. Unacceptable; do assignment over. See instructor immediately for further clarification. 6. The use of copyright material will affect your final grade. Using someone else s material is illegal. If you do use clip art, you will need to change and stylize the work to be your own or create the artist who created the clip art 7. The assigned textbooks are to be read, exercises completed, and brought to every class as reference manuals. Failure to have these with you will be considered an absence for the grading criteria. Quizzes will be given covering the material in the book.
3 OBJECTIVES The practical exercises assigned will mould the learner to: Course Objectives Demonstrate certain skills with computer software applications. Ability to gather and utilize information from a variety of courses. Ability to import and export content in a variety of software applications. Ability to define a visual message of importance and communicate that to a particular audience. Ability to communicate visual-verbal message in a narrative form. Define the sequential steps involved in problem definition, information gathering, concept development and implementation. Ability to create animated sequences for web and interactive presentations. Methods in developing ideas through practical exercises and techniques. Describe the various roles necessary to produce multimedia productions. Ability to identify the components of a successful web site or interactive media. Ability to control the sequence of visual information by selecting a navigational structure. Demonstrate the proper methods for presentation of interactive media. Demonstrate an understanding of multimedia production in the organizing of ideas, and preparation of graphic content. Develop a good overview of interactive presentations as they apply to new media. Ability to structure the building of the framework for an interactive game. Demonstrate the creation and use of global variable shared among movies and handlers. Demonstrate the repetition of an action when a specific condition exists. Ability to use programming arguments to pass values used as placeholders. SEMESTER ASSIGNMENTS The semester assignments are listing on the following semester schedule when you will be given studio time to work on them. Details of these assignments will be given on a handout. The final assignment (Electronic Portfolio) will showcase your work this semester and throughout your experience as a student at SCCC. The following items are expected to be displayed in this electronic portfolio: A consistent, well-designed interface reflective of you as a designer Electronic Presentation: Drawings Electronic Presentation: Print Media and Typography Electronic Presentation: Photography / 2D / ART115 / ART116 Scrolling City (your version) Smiley and Food Websites from GRD203 and other items requested when the project is defined.
