Staniland Academy Fire and Emergency Policy and Procedure The safe evacuation of the buildings is of primary importance. Exits must be kept clear. Fire doors MUST be kept shut. (This includes the lower ground entrance to the staffroom) Fire drills need to be practiced so that all staff and children are aware of the procedures i.e. routes to be varied and on different days and times so that all staff can be included. A Practice fire drill will be carried out at least every term All new members of staff will be made aware of the policies and procedures. There is NO SMOKING ALLOWED on the premises Matches and lighters MUST be inaccessible to the children. Fire appliances will be checked annually and staff need to be aware of their position and how to use them Any recommendations made by the fire prevention officer must be carried out and adhered to. Should fire break out in the school, it will be the responsibility of staff members to: raise the alarm, evacuate the school, check all pupils out of the building, report the success of the evacuation to the Head of Academy. Clearly written instructions for a fire drill will be on display at all times. Preparation for Emergencies 1 It will be the responsibility of all staff to ensure they familiarise themselves with the evacuation route/procedure for each base they visit/use. All evacuation procedures are displayed at the fire exits. 2 The Head of Academy will ensure Fire Safety Awareness among staff. 3 New staff will be inducted in the following: Written fire evacuation procedure Sound of alarm Means of raising alarm in that location

Tour of building to include Final exit doors Call points (where the alarm is raised) Assembly points Alternative routes of escape Position and importance of keeping smoke fire doors closed Specific arrangements to the building Location of fire fighting equipment Fire procedure for safe evacuation of the building 1 Any pupil observing an outbreak of fire will AT ONCE inform the nearest adult who will immediately sound the fire alarm. 2 On hearing the alarm teachers will supervise the immediate evacuation of their classroom by the assigned escape route and proceed to the assembly point. It will be the responsibility of the Head of Academy, or appropriate member of staff in the Head s absence, to call the Fire Brigade. 3 Every door should be closed immediately the room/area is vacated. 4 Movement must be speedy and disciplined to avoid panic. To assist movement external fire doors should not be clipped back to enable free flow to the playground. NO CHILD SHOULD HOLD THE DOORS OPEN. 5 Time must not be taken to collect coats or other belongings. 6 Anyone in the toilet will leave the building by the nearest route. 7 Immediately on arrival at the assembly point, teachers will check that everyone is present by calling the register or using the headcount method. Any child missing should be reported to the Head of Academy or senior member of staff on duty. Evacuation Duties Teachers: Management: Lead the immediate evacuation of their class by the safest, nearest route. As appropriate to their safest evacuation route, managers should check the following areas: Staff and pupil toilets Staffroom

Communal areas Pupil cloakrooms It will be the duty of the Head of Academy or delegate (Admin Manager) to check that the Fire Service has been called. They will also be responsible for undertaking a roll call and reporting to the Fire Fighter in charge. Admin Staff should collect the visitor s book, Fire Pack (Red file), gate keys and alarm keys before evacuation. NB all other persons in school, TA s, students and parent helpers will be responsible for ensuring their own safety and evacuation. Staff and children that work in the building will line up as far away from the buildings as possible, in classes, on the KS1 playground hall end Teachers will then call the registers. After the children have been counted a member of staff will check that all adults/staff are present. Foundation Stage (FS1 and FS2) The Foundation Stage building has a separate fire alarm. They would not normally evacuate when the main school alarm goes off. If their alarm goes off they should assemble in the playground closest to them (outside the Infant classrooms) and then move around to the KS2 playground if possible. In the event that this is not possible then the Nursery footpath should be used to walk to the small gate and use the key to open the gate to move down the path towards Peck Avenue. The gate key will be kept in a visible safe place that all members of staff know about. The FS Manager (or Senior member of staff in her absence) will do a sweep of the toilets. Year 1 and 2 (KS1) Year one children to leave via the fire exit in their classroom with their teacher. They then line up on the tarmac area outside the KS2 (Y3/4) classrooms. (KS2 Playground) If there is an obstacle obstructing the fire-exit, leave via the next nearest fire-exit, this may be the next classroom or the main door near the office, depending on where your class is located. When the children are lining up on the playground the teacher will call the register to check all children are present. (KS2 playground)

Star Base Y3, Y4 & Jaguars Rooms Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (KS2) KS2 children to leave the classroom via their fire-exit door, classroom door their class and line up with their teacher on the KS2 playground (outside Y6/Y5), ready for the teacher to call the register. If there is an obstacle obstructing the fire-exit, leave via the next nearest fire-exit, this may be the next classroom, entrance hall or the door opposite the library, depending on the location of your classroom. Then the class and teacher make their way to the KS2 playground. When the children are lined up on the playground the teacher will call the register to check all children are present. NOTES: Teachers to take their register with them if they have it, when they hear the alarm. A member of the Admin Team will try and get round with the Fire Drill Sheets but if short staffed this may not be possible. If staff do not have a register they should be using the headcount method and use the classroom daily count poster. Any staff who may be working in the Starbase are to meet on the KS2 playground. Last person to leave any room shuts the door. We must make sure all exit doors are closed. If there is child or a member of staff missing inform the senior member of staff present. Please can teachers discuss the above procedures with the class and remind them to leave via the nearest exit if they are in the toilet, and not to collect belongings etc. KS2 Playgrounds FS1 FS2 Y1 Y2 SCHOOL Lions, Owls Eagles Classrooms Y3 Y4 Y5 Y6

At lunch time the Staff on duty will line the children up on the playground and the teachers will join them on the playground. However the teachers and teaching assistants will know how many children should be present by familiarising themselves daily with the total of children present board in the classrooms. Staff must remember to change the information if children go home for lunch. Important Notes: Head of Academy general oversight F/KS1/KS2/Staff Head of KS2 sweep KS2 classes Other Y6 teacher - sweep KS2 toilets Head of KS1 sweep KS1 classes Other Y1 teacher sweep KS1 toilets & Hall Foundation Stage Lead sweep FS & toilets ICT Technician to check staff room and stairs (IF they are in their room when alarm sounds) Admin Manager call 999, account for admin staff & visitors Admin Support sweep toilets outside the office and staff toilets (Act as Admin Manager if she is absent). Under no circumstances should anyone return into the building without the Head of Academy s or Admin Manager s permission. In the absence of the Head of Academy or Admin Manager one of the Key Stage Head s will make the decision. No-one will give the all clear until the fire services deem it safe to enter.
