1 SNT newsletter West Moors, St Leonards and St Ives SNT October 2015 Safer Neighbourhoods is a commitment by Dorset Police to improving the quality of life within our communities by working together with partners to target the issues identified by you - local people - as those that matter most. There are a number of opportunities that the Safer Neighbourhood Team in your area will provide, on an ongoing basis, for you to voice your concerns. 2 New priorities - You are telling us that the following issues are a priority in your area 1. Burglary - Patrols and increasing occupier awareness through public events and messaging system 2. Speeding Specifically Pinehurst Road and other A31 access routes 3. Telephone Scams and Doorstep Traders - We have continued to keep this as a priority due to ongoing complaints from residents Previous priorities - You said We did 1. You said... Breaks to outbuildings We have Worked actively with local Home Watches to help promote security awareness. We have utilised the Dorset Alert system to notify people of when and where these crimes are occurring in an effort to reduce crime and promote security. 2. You said... Telephone Scams and Doorstep Traders We have Worked alongside the launch of Dorset Police s Cyber Crime campaign in an effort to raise awareness of cyber crime and prevent local residents becoming victims to these scams. Dorset Police also arranged for BT to significantly reduce the time that a phone line stays open in Dorset to two seconds. This means that the person who has received the call can hang up and make another call almost immediately without the other person staying on the line. Criminals relied on lines staying open to continue their scam. 3. You said Keeping victims of crime updated and informed We have Utilised our new computer system to ensure that we keep victims of crime up to date. This included updates from other departments such as CID or CSI. This has allowed us to ensure that victims get all the necessary help and support they need to help deal with their situation. 3 NEWS IN YOUR AREA Over the next few months, we will be running a project called Your Dorset. Your Police. Your View, where we will be engaging with the public to raise their understanding about the complexity and challenges of modern policing, and seeking their views on a number of topics. We would also like your help both to promote the project to the public and to take part yourself. There will be features, events and activities that will show the public what policing is really about in both the visible areas the public are familiar with, such as neighbourhood policing, and our often-unseen work to keep them safe from risk and harm. Colleagues from across the Force have been contributing to the project to identify the areas we should feature and to decide what questions we would like the public s help to answer. Each month will focus on a different theme. Activities during the first part of each month will focus on sharing information about the topic to improve people s understanding, with the second part then collecting their views. The monthly themes are: October Protecting you from risk and harm November Local policing in your area December Working smarter and closer with others There will be a short break in January to analyse views received so far, before the final month: February Feeding back the findings so far, seeking views on how to meet multiple priorities across different months while still meeting our financial challenges, and explaining how the Force will be using the results Overall we aim to use the findings to give the public a better understanding of policing and to help make decisions about our policing priorities in the future, particularly if we continue to face financial challenges. More information can be found at: and clicking the link for Your Dorset, Your Police, Your View. An issue that seems to be on the increase again is the Microsoft scam phone calls. In recent weeks there have been several incidents in Dorset, including the Ferndown area where people have received these calls. The callers say that they are from

4 Microsoft and that the victim s computer has become infected with viruses and spyware. They then state that this can be fixed for a fee. Please do not be fooled by this type of scam. Banks, Microsoft and other such businesses do not carry out these types of practices. Unfortunately there have been several burglaries in the area since the last newsletter. Access is being gained via the rear of properties, usually by smashing or forcing windows and doors. Cash and jewellery appear to be the targeted items. Can we please ask that residents refrain from keeping large amounts of cash in their homes and that they keep a record of their jewellery. This can be done by taking photos of each item and getting an approx. value from a jewellers. You may have noticed the SNT showing a presence around the local schools recently, this is to help manage issues with parking and access during school run times. Unfortunately we cannot be present on all occasions but would politely ask that any parents taking part in the school run consider the local residents. There are numerous side roads to park in around our schools, which are considerably less busy, making the lives of everyone that little bit easier. This year, Remembrance Day falls on Sunday 8 th November. West Moors will be holding its annual Remembrance Service which includes a parade along Station Road to the war memorial. Please be aware that throughout the course of the morning there will be a road closure on Station Road. Diversion signs will be in place to direct any traffic around the main service. With Halloween at the end of the month, we have included a small window notice for those of you who do not wish to partake in this event.
