2 This directory lists the range of services offered in the Counties Manukau district to support breastfeeding mothers as well as their whaanau and supporters. Postnatal enrolment from birth to 3 weeks. Babies over 3 weeks old will have a one-off visit from a lactation consultant to support lead maternity carers, doctors and Well Child providers. Registered mothers who require extra support with breastfeeding can also call 0800 B4Baby. The B4Baby service is available to Maaori, Pacific and Asian mothers from Mangere, Otara, Clendon, Papatoetoe, Manurewa and Papakura. Support and education are provided in a range of settings including the home, local community venues, marae, or the Coveney Clinic. Service hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30am-5pm Telephone support hours: Mon-Sat, 8am-8pm Supported by Creating a Better Future Mother and Baby Breastfeeding Centre Botany Town Centre Community Rooms A community clinic designed to support breastfeeding mothers and operated by three lactation consultants and volunteers. When: Fri, 12:30-3pm (except school holidays) Phone to check La Leche League La Leche League welcomes pregnant women, mothers, babies, toddlers, whaanau and support people to their relaxed meetings. Leaders help mothers to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, education, information and encouragement. They are also available by phone to offer practical advice for mothers coping with breastfeeding difficulties at any time. When: Monthly meetings (your local contact below has details) La Leche League also provides information and support for women in special circumstances including mothers with a disability, premature babies, multiple births and babies with a cleft palate or Down Syndrome. 3 Private Lactation Consultants Lactation consultants have specialist training in breastfeeding and lactation. They mostly work with mothers and babies who have more complex breastfeeding problems. There is generally a fee for their services. Duration: 5 weeks $40 Papakura Maternity Unit Clevedon Rd, Papakura A lactation consultant is available to assist patients with breastfeeding queries upon request. Antenatal Breastfeeding Class: When: Fri, 11am-12pm (phone to book) Pukekohe Maternity Services Tuakau Rd, Pukekohe Breastfeeding Support Group: La Leche League facilitates a support group which is open to pregnant women and mothers in the Pukekohe community. When: Mon, 10am-12pm
4 Birthcare Auckland* Titoki St, Parnell, Auckland Birthcare offers a range of antenatal services including marae-based, breastfeeding-specific and refresher classes. There is a cost for some courses. Antenatal Classes: offered in Mt Roskill, Panmure, Parnell, Onehunga and Three Kings. Duration: 12 hours (over 2, 3, 4 or 6 weeks) Refresher Classes: for 2nd and subsequent pregnancies. Duration: 2.5 hours (offered monthly) $40 Preparation for Breastfeeding Course: Duration: 2 hours (offered monthly) $30 Marae-based Childbirth Classes: offered at the Orakei, Ruapotaka, Te Tira Hou and Te Waipuna Puawai Marae. To register: contact Birthcare (above) or Ngati Whatua Orakei Health Services Duration: 12 hours (over 3 weeks) Lactation Clinic: Mothers and babies with breastfeeding difficulties can make an individual appointment with Birthcare s lactation consultant. How: Phone to book and bring a referral from your midwife or lead maternity carer for babies under 28 days old Auckland Hospital Birthing Unit* Level 9, Auckland City Hospital, Grafton, Auckland ADHB Community Breastfeeding Support Service For Maaori, Pacific and Asian families living in Otahuhu (which is split between the Auckland DHB and Counties Manukau DHB), a multi-ethnic team of breastfeeding advocates and a lactation consultant offer home visits, support and education during pregnancy and after baby is born. for mothers living in the ADHB area (phone if unsure) * Please note that Birthcare, the Auckland Hospital Birthing Unit and the ADHB Community Breastfeeding Support Service are all located in the Auckland district and not in Counties Manukau. However they have been included in this directory as some of their services are available to women living in the Counties Manukau district. Well Child/Tamariki Ora Services Well Child providers are health professionals that support you during the first 5 years of your baby s life. Their services are to eligible babies and they follow the growth and development of your child, as well as providing a variety of other services. There are four providers of Well Child services in the Counties Manukau district. 1) Plunket Counties Manukau Family Centre: Staffed by Plunket Nurses, community Karitane and volunteers, the family centre offers support and information on a range of issues including breastfeeding, sleeping, infant nutrition, child behaviour and parenting. Where: 10 Halver Rd When: Tues-Fri (bookings essential) Well Child/Tamariki Ora Services Plunket operates over 25 clinics in Counties Manukau, including a mobile clinic. Your local area office will assist you with queries and direct you to the most convenient clinic. East Tamaki/Otara area office Howick area office Mangere area office Manurewa area office Papakura/Franklin area office PlunketLine advice on children s health and wellbeing, available 24 hours, seven days a week. 2) Raukura Hauora O Tainui Manurewa Trust Health Care, New Hook Lane, Manurewa Mokopuna Ora: Well Child nurses and support workers provide comprehensive care and support for tamariki and whaanau in the Counties Manukau district, including home visits and assistance with transport. When: Mon-Fri, 8:30am-5pm 3) Papakura Marae 0800 Tamariki or Hunua Rd, Papakura Tamariki Ora: Offer Well Child checks in your home, at Papakura Marae, Te Kohanga Reo, day care centres or in the workplace. When: Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm 4) South Seas Health Care East Tamaki Rd, Papatoetoe Well Child nurses, health workers and social workers specialise in Pacific languages and offer a range of additional services for primarily Pacific communities. When: Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm
5 Multiple Birth Association Provides information, support and advocacy for those directly involved with the care, raising and wellbeing of a multiple birth, including breastfeeding issues. Hospital-grade breast pumps are also available to borrow locally. Counties Manukau/Franklin esther.williams@xtra.co.nz Healthline hour phone line staffed by registered nurses, including those with Well Child experience. Language Line: when you call Healthline from Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, the nurse or call handler can usually arrange for an interpreter. Outside these hours, interpreter services are used where possible. Women s Health Action Trust Women s Health Action has a full time breastfeeding advocate and provides evidence-based information, support and advice on breastfeeding in the community and at work. WHA coordinates the annual Big Latch On event and provides breastfeeding-friendly spaces at events. Ministry of Health Every mother has a different experience with breastfeeding and not everyone finds it easy. The website has information for mothers and their supporters, personal stories, tips about how you can help and information for health professionals. DVD: Breastfeeding. Naturally : This follows nine women, showing the realities of breastfeeding for women and their families as well as tips for success. It is distributed to mums-to-be by their lead maternity carer and can also be viewed on the above website. Breastfeeding in the Workplace All employers are required to provide facilities and unpaid breaks for employees who wish to breastfeed their infants or express milk during work hours. These provisions are part of the Employment Relations (Breaks, Infant Feeding and Other Matters) Amendment Act Breastfeeding in the workplace A guide for employers: can be found on the Department of Labour website (above). Work & Income Assistance Depending on individual circumstances and eligibility, assistance may be available for the hire or purchase of a breast pump through: Transition to Work Grant: if the mother is returning to work Special Needs Grant: if the mother cannot receive assistance elsewhere Disability Allowance: the cost of hire may be included in this allowance for a mother or child with an ongoing disability requiring a breast pump Temporary Additional Support: if ongoing disability costs already exceed the maximum rate of the Disability Allowance
