Effective On-Line Tools for Workforce Solutions Staff to Utilize When Working With Veterans

Tools for Veteran Service Providers Due to the Refocusing Efforts under the Jobs for Veterans State Grants Program (JVSG), ES staffs are now the primary staff working with veterans without significant barriers to employment or in the 18 to 24 year old age group. This breakout session will highlight several on-line tools that ES staff can use to be more effective when working with veterans. The online tools include the following: The Air Force Virtual Educational Center Texas Workforce Commission s Reality Check Texas Wide Open for Veterans

Tools for Veteran Service Providers Continued Department of Defense and the Department of Veteran Affairs ebenefits System The Department of Veteran Affairs Veteran On-Line Application System The Navy s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line System The Marine Corps Opportunities On-Line System Texas Skills to Work Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation s Military Experience Licensing Programs The Army s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line System

Air Force Virtual Education Center The Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) is the Air Force's premier site for information about educational benefits. The purpose of this system is to provide you with one-stopshopping for all higher education needs. AFVEC offers a wide array of on-line services to empower you to actively participate in all aspects of your education to include the creation and management of online Tuition Assistance (TA). These services are offered to encourage progress of each educational endeavor you choose to participate in; whether it is working towards your Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree, applying for commissioning or testing for PME completion.

Air Force COOL What is Credentialing? Credentialing has two purposes. First, it continues to professionalize the enlisted force by providing up-to-date industry-recognized credentials in an airman s AF job. Second, it provides a way for airmen to prepare for civilian life by ensuring that they are ready for work in the civilian sector. There are many aspects to credentialing including certifications and licenses.

Community College of the Air Force Civilian Colleges and Universities partner with the Air Force partner with the Air Force to Offer Bachelor s Degree Opportunities for the Enlisted Force Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative (AU-ABC) directs Airmen with associate in applied science degrees from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) to a collection of accredited military friendly colleges and universities to consider when completing a four-year degree. The program maximizes the application of military career education and training, and provides a multitude of online academic and support services for the enlisted member.

Community College of the Air Force Continued GEM is a partnership between CCAF & partnering regionally accredited civilian schools to provide general education courses that meet CCAF requirements in an online format: anytime, anywhere availability 67 Colleges Participating

Questions?

The Navy s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line System

Marine Corps COOL: Credentialing Opportunities On-Line

Credentialing Opportunities On- Line Overview What is Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) System Basic understanding of how to utilize site How it helps ES staff Why it should be used Why it is important for transitioning personnel to know it exists Questions?

What is the Credentialing Opportunities On-Line System? The Navy s and the Marine Corps Credentialing Opportunities On-Line Systems are separate websites that both Navy and Marine Corps prior service members can use to show employers the skills they obtained throughout their military service in order to gain employment without the possibility of further education or limiting the need for further education.

Basic Understanding of Navy & Marine Corps Cool Navy s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (Navy) Marine Corps Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (Marines) After the transitioning service member is on the site appropriate to their branch of service, it is self explanatory. The Veteran will fill out all required and applicable information. the system will then tell them what credentials they can obtain for employment opportunities from the jobs that they performed while they were in the service.

Navy s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line Related Credentials

Example Credential: Navy Welder Enter the prior Navy Service Member s NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification), in this case a welder The prior Navy Service Member would be able to apply for a certification that would prove that they have completed the necessary training as a professional welder without the need for further training!

What is it good for and how it should be used? This site should be used to show Navy and Marine personnel that they do have marketable skills that have been obtained through military service. These sites are free and certifications through experience could be obtained by simply applying for them. Or in some cases training could be smaller courses. Example: Training that would usually take 5-6 weeks could be cut dramatically down 1-2 weeks from using the certifications given. This site will also give schools available for the use of the veterans Post 9-11 GI bill or any available education benefits that the Veterans may still have.

Why Should Staff Use It? Most Veterans separating from the service have a lot of marketable skills that they have obtained through their military service, however when they transition none of the military training is marketable to civilian employers due to the military s specific military language These sites make it possible to give those Veterans an understanding and possible certifications that civilian employers will understand and that are marketable

Questions?

Texas Skills to Work Texas Skills to Work was developed through the State of Texas Soldier Employment Initiative Main function is to identify the veteran job seeker skills by translating the military language into Detailed Work Activities The tool can be used by the veteran job seeker, service provider, and employer Rates skill sets from highest o lowest Provides O*NET Occupational Titles and Codes Job matching function built into the program

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Programs TDLR has identified six TDLR programs which have a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code related to these specific licenses: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor Barbers Polygraph Examiners Registered Accessibility Specialists Electricians Water Well Drillers and Pump Installers
