1 (700 labc, 700 uc, 850 Cell, 1900 PCS, 2100 AWS) Overview The FlexWave Host-to-Host is designed to allow Service Providers and Value Added Resellers a flexible, scalable, multi-band, multi-protocol solution for delivering RF spectrum from a common Base Station (BTS) location (i.e. Base Station Hotel) to a large public venue, multi-tenant high rise building, stadium or campus to drive a new or existing Distributed Antenna System (DAS). Host-to-Host enables the transport of RF spectrum to locations where physical space for base stations is limited or unavailable. Host-to-Host features TE s patented digital-over-fiber technology for the transport of RF spectrum digitally over a passive optical fiber network and provides superior voice and data quality, flexibility, and overall performance. System Description While the solution consists of two components, it offers broad capabilities. FlexWave Host-to-Host supports legacy licensed mobile services and emerging technologies. Host-to-Host provides edge-to-edge bandwidth and multi-band/multi-protocol flexibility. Host-to-Host provides an industry-leading element management that includes on-site or remote accessible system alarming and management of network elements. The Host-to-Host solution is a scalable platform allowing for easy system growth, whether the system needs to scale to reach new service venues or add bandwidth and capacity to an existing system. Two main components make-up the Host-to-Host solution: and Host Expansion Unit (HEU). The Host serves as an interface to the RF source/base Station. The Host digitizes the RF inputs from the base station and transmits those over fiber optic cable to the HEU. The HEU converts the digitized signal to RF and distributes the signal to a DAS. The Host-to-Host s flexibility allows for maximum network design optimization for RF transport to large public venues, multitenant high rise buildings, stadiums or campues. Besides architectural flexibility, it also accommodates a variety of business models in applications where the system supports multiple wireless service providers. Digital Transport FlexWave Host-to-Host uses patented digital RF-over-fiber technology to distribute RF to desired service locations. The Hostto-Host digitizes the entire designated RF band and transports the digitized RF over dark fiber. The signal is reconstructed at full bandwidth, regardless of modulation technology. TE s digital RF transport allows signals to be replicated at full dynamic range, independent of the fiber link length, for improved data throughput. Host-to-Host is perfect for network migration to 3G and 4G networks with high data rate broadband services.
2 Features and Benefits Flexible - Aggregates multiple frequency bands, wireless protocols (2G, 3G, 4G), or sectors in one system - Supports optical multiplexing solutions (xwdm) to minimize fiber requirements - Air interface independent - System modularity to add and grow - Supports up to eight bands in non-contiguous segments of 1.5 to 75 MHz each - Field upgradable Simplified Management and Support - Common hardware and software with TE's Prism and Spectrum - Simplifies procurement, reduces spares kit, and simplifies installation Scalable - Add bands/protocols by adding DART cards at the Host and HEU Performance - Digital transport maintains superior signal quality even over long distance fiber runs - High dynamic range increases capability for data throughput, enabling higher rate broadband services Applications Due to the growth in high-bandwidth applications being delivered across the mobile network, Service Providers are off-loading their traditional macro network for in-building, large public venues, stadiums and campus environments. The challenge Service Providers face is the ability to locate base station resources at these venues to drive an in-building DAS (whether there is an existing DAS solution or a new DAS solution being deployed). TE s Host-to-Host solution allows the Service Providers the ability to centrally locate base station resources and transport multiple blocks of RF spectrum from the centralized location to a remote location to drive an in-building DAS system for a fraction of the footprint of a traditional BTS. The ability to centrally locate BTS resources has significant advantages for the Service Provider, as they can take advantage of the common infrastructure (Buildings, HAVC, Power, Battery Back-up, staffed technicians, etc ), thus saving on the cost for rental space at the remote location for equipment and sharing common expense of the infrastructure necessary to support these locations. Service Providers can also take advantage of underutilized BTS resources, by using BTS' which reside in multiple locations. With the Host-to-Host solution the Service Provider can transport underutilized BTS capacity from multiple locations to feed a venue, hence utilizing already deployed assets to provide coverage and capacity to venue. 4 The rack-mountable FlexWave is typically located at a Base Station or a facility housing a suite of Base Stations. On the forward path, the receives the RF signals from the BTS and digitizes the designated RF bands and digitally transports them over single-mode fiber or a millimeter wave link to the Remote Units. On the reverse path, the receives the digitized RF signals from the Remote Unit and converts them back to RF for the BTS. The Prism is completely modular in design. Digital/Analog Radio Transceiver (DARTS) are hot swappable providing easy upgrades to additional bands without interrupting existing service. The supports up to eight (8) Digital/Analog Radio Transceiver (DARTS) cards (supporting up to eight (8) BTS interfaces). DART cards are available in either 35 MHZ non-contiguous bandwidth option or 75 MHz full bandwidth option. A Single SuperDART supports 35MHz of non-contiguous bandwidth across the total bandwidth of a given service. For example, PCS is 70 MHz wide. The Single SuperDART supports up to 35 MHz of bandwidth within that 70 MHz range, including two non-contiguous slices. The Single SuperDART uses a single DART position in the Host and one DART position in the RF Module. This card utilizes up to six time-slots and can be deployed in diversity receive applications. The Dual SuperDART supports up to 75 MHz of instantaneous bandwidth. For example, PCS is 70MHz wide. The Dual SuperDART will pass full bandwidth of desired spectrum. The Dual Super DART uses two DART positions in the Host and two DART positions in the RF Module. The utilizes an embedded element management system for system configuration and network monitoring. The embedded EMS collects alarm information from both the Host and HEU. For multiple link deployments, multiple Host Units can be networked together at the same BTS site. In addition to sending alarm notifications to the Element Management System (EMS) through software, the Prism also features front panel alarm reporting. LEDs on the front panel of the will change color depending on the status of the unit. LED displays provide information regarding the following items: Power System mode (active/standby) Indicate unit fault condition RF conditions Host Expansion Unit The Host Expansion Unit (HEU) is located at the site where RF services are needed. It is a 19 rack-mounted chassis that is 3U high and 9 deep. The HEU has eight (8) hot-swappable RF plug-in cards called Remote RF DARTs that are paired 1:1 with a companion DART at the. On the forward path, the Remote RF DARTs convert the digitize signal from the and distribute the signal directly to a DAS system or an amplifier shelf before connecting to a DAS system. On the reverse path, the Remote RF DARTs convert the RF signal from the DAS to a digital signal for aggregation and transport back to the. 4
5 Alarm and Management System FlexWave Host-to-Host utilizes an embedded network management for system configuration and network monitoring. The Element Management System (EMS) utilizes a web based interface or SNMP protocol for easy accesses to the system. The EMS provides operational and maintenance capabilities for the Host-to-Host system. The system provides end-to-end alarming from the Host all the way to the HEU. The EMS has the ability to configure the system, view status and parameter settings, download software, change parameters and monitor system performance and alarms. Access and troubleshooting can also be accomplished on-site at either the and/or the HEU by utilizing a craft interface. Thus, allowing technicians the ability to plug-in a laptop and access all associated units connected to it. Host Site Capabilities The EMS performs the following functions at the Host site: Provides real-time information regarding faults Displays various system level values (voltages, RF, power, etc.) Records and generates history reports with time and date stamps Adjusts performance related parameters of the system Permits placement of system into standby mode Allows download of new software versions Network Monitoring Capabilities The embedded EMS allows for remote alarm monitoring and network control of the system can also be performed from an off-site location or Network Operation Center (NOC). Communications to the NOC can be performed using the web based interface or SNMP protocol. The EMS performs the following functions at off-site locations such as the NOC: Provides real-time information regarding faults Displays various system level values (voltages, RF, power, etc.) Adjusts performance-related parameters of the system Permits placement of the system into standby mode Access records and generates history reports with time and date stamps Allows download of new software versions 5
