MPH Internship Handbook City University of New York School of Public Health Lehman College, Department of Health Sciences Updated January 2012

Overview The public health internship is an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real world settings and to acquire new skills and competencies for addressing public health issues. The internship is a requirement of all MPH programs. The internship field experience allows application of academic theory, concepts, and methods. Students engage in activities in a variety of organizations involving public health research, program planning, program implementation, program evaluation, policy analysis, outreach, health education, advocacy, and other health-related work that expand students understanding of public health practice. The goals of the internship are to: Enable students to synthesize and integrate an area of substantive expertise with core public health competencies in one or more of the following areas: community assessment; program planning; program implementation; program evaluation; research methods and analysis; policy analysis and advocacy. Apply this learning to distinct internship projects that focus on student interests and internship site needs. Provide host sites with valuable materials, services, analyses, and/or research that relate directly to the ongoing activities and mission of the site, and that help to meet the defined public health needs of the site s surrounding community. The internship is tailored to meet the interests and needs of individual students. Typical internships include (but are not limited to) the following types of activities and projects: Develop and conduct a community health assessment Develop a community health promotion program Assist with data collection on a public health research project Assist with analysis of data on a public health research project Assist with the evaluation of a public health program Help to organize community participation in a public health program Develop a grant proposal for a public health program Internship Requirements There are three main components of the practical experience that fulfill MPH degree requirements: Completion of the Internship Seminar (PHE 770), which assists the student in completing and documenting the fieldwork portion of their internship. This seminar is usually taken in the spring semester of the student s 2 nd year in the program. Completion of 180 hours of supervised internship fieldwork, which are typically completed concurrently with enrollment in PHE 770. Completion of the Capstone Seminar (PHE 790), which consists of reflecting on the educational and internship experiences and developing a culminating capstone project. This seminar is usually taken in the fall semester following the completion of the internship and PHE 770. The culminating capstone project is a major written paper and PowerPoint presentation prepared by the student. 1

General Guidelines for the Internship: 1. Each student must complete a total of 180 hours of fieldwork. 2. The internship must have a public health orientation clinical activities or direct client services are not acceptable. 3. If a student wants to do the internship at her/his workplace, the internship project cannot be part of the student s regular job responsibilities. 4. The internship must be supervised by an onsite preceptor who must be a qualified professional with expertise/experience in public health and with expertise in the area of the student s specific internship project. 5. Before the student begins the internship, a written internship Scope of Work must be approved by the internship advisor and a Letter of Confirmation from the preceptor should be submitted. 6. Students should plan on beginning their internships as soon as the Scope of Work is approved and the Letter of Confirmation is submitted. Ideally, the internship will take place between January and May of the year in which the student is enrolled in PHE 770, though it is acceptable for internships to begin earlier and to continue into the summer if necessary. The Internship Seminar (PHE 770) The Internship Seminar (PHE 770) is offered once a year in the spring semester. Permission of the instructor is required to enroll in PHE 770. The following courses are prerequisites for enrolling in the seminar: History & Philosophy of Public Health (PHE700) Biostatistics (PHE 600) Epidemiology (PHE 606) Social & Behavioral Dimensions of Health (PHE 703) Research Methods (PHE 710) Program Planning & Evaluation (PHE 715) The planning for the internship begins even before enrollment in PHE 770, however. In the fall semester prior to enrollment in PHE 770, students will be asked to complete a self-assessment form that will help the internship advisor to solicit and suggest appropriate internship placements. The internship matching process will also begin during the fall semester. These activities count toward the grade given for PHE 770. Once students are enrolled in PHE 770, they will meet with the internship advisor occasionally as a group for activity, lecture, and discussion sessions, and occasionally one-on-one with the internship advisor, according to the syllabus for the course. Grades are based on the quality and timely submission of the following (forms and guidelines for these are available at the end of this document): Student Self-Assessment of Internship Interests Form (submitted in the Fall prior to enrollment in PHE 770) Draft Internship Scope of Work Approved Internship Scope of Work developed by student in consultation with preceptor and internship advisor 2

Letter of Confirmation submitted by the internship preceptor Regular progress reports to the internship advisor Logic models of student outcomes and internship host site outcomes A 5-6 page Internship Reflection Paper A completed Student Evaluation of Internship Experience form A copy of the culminating deliverable outlined in the approved Scope of Work Additionally, the following materials are required upon completion of the internship and are considered prerequisites for enrolling in PHE 790, the Capstone Seminar: A completed Preceptor Evaluation of Internship form Certification of completion of the required 180 hours from the preceptor (part of the above form) Internship Goals & Learning Objectives The general goal of the internship is to strengthen the understanding, knowledge, critical analysis, and professional skills needed to address a particular area of public health, as well as to develop the student s general professional skills and abilities. These are achieved by familiarizing the intern with: The practice of public health in order to help the intern identify with the profession. The organizational and administrative dimensions of public health. Activities involving a specialty area of public health. Professional behavior and expectations. Specific skills to be honed in the internship may include: An ability to apply knowledge gleaned from public health courses. An ability to assess and understand the operations of an organization conducting activities related to public health, and to see how these efforts fit into the larger work of the field. An ability to find and use appropriate professional practice information from the public health and scientific literatures and other public health sources. An ability to formulate or design a system, process, or program to meet identified public health needs. An ability to identify and solve public health problems. An ability to collect and/or analyze public health data. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams, and work both collaboratively and independently. An ability to reflect on the internship experience. The Internship also meets the following core (CC) and track (TC) competencies set out by the CUNY School of Public Health, which indicate that at the completion of the internship, Lehman MPH students will be able to: Apply the core orientation and values of public health in professional practice (e.g. population-focused, community-oriented, prevention-oriented, multi-level, ecological, rooted in social justice); Understand the importance of and demonstrate collaborative engagement with diverse communities, sectors and/or constituencies (e.g. researchers, practitioner, community organizations) to achieve public health goals; 3

Propose and evaluate intervention approaches, directed at various targets and levels of social organization, to prevent or control urban health problems; Use information resources to gather and analyze public health data; and Synthesize theories, methods and practice of public health to address health inequities within communities. Developing an Internship Project Many students have an idea of what they would like to do and/or sites for their internship. Students begin the process of developing their projects in the fall prior to enrolling in PHE 770 by completing the Student Self-Assessment of Internship Interests, engaging in the internship matching process if desired, and talking to contacts at potential internship sites to see if there is a mutual interest and fit for a project. The internship advisor will oversee this process, and provide opportunities to explore potential internships based on the MPH program s contacts with a variety of agencies and organizations, primarily in the Bronx. Students are expected to take major responsibility in developing their internship project, under the guidance of the internship advisor and in consultation with the internship site. The internship project should meet both the needs of the agency and the educational purposes of the MPH program. We strongly encourage students to use the internship project as the basis for the required capstone project. Students will be placed with agencies or organizations based on the match between students interests and skills and agency/organization needs. Agency or organization staff members (who might serve as internship preceptors) are encouraged to interview prospective interns. The internship advisor grants the final approval of the student s field placement and project. Participating organizations are not required to offer stipends or compensation. The role of the internship advisor is to guide students in obtaining a placement and developing an appropriate internship project. The advisor guides each student in formulating personal objectives for the field experience and assists in the selection of the best placement to fulfill those objectives. The Lehman MPH program is located in a borough where there are numerous diverse and underserved communities and many opportunities to influence health outcomes among Lehman s neighbors. The MPH Program strongly encourages students to undertake their internship within one of the many service delivery programs, or affiliated organizations situated within our local communities. Responsibilities of the Field Organization Participating agencies and organizations agree to provide the student with a suitable field experience for a designated period of time and agree to assist in the professional development of that student by identifying an appropriate preceptor. The agency agrees to provide the student with all materials, equipment, and space needed to conduct the work. The agency submits a written and signed letter of a confirmation that identifies the student, the agreed upon Scope of Work, and expected deliverables from the student. 4

The preceptor has the primary responsibility for supervising and guiding the student in the development and implementation of the internship project. The role of the preceptor includes the following activities: Assist the intern in determining specific, mutually agreeable, written internship objectives and deliverables to the agency; Orient the intern to the field organization s mission, programs, policies and protocols; Commit time for instructional interaction and dialogue with the intern; Provide supervision of the intern s activities; If indicated, resolve conflicts with agency or organization policy; Prepare an evaluation of the intern, and discuss it with the intern prior to transmittal to the internship advisor; Transmit the intern s final evaluation to the internship advisor; and Share any comments and/or suggestions about the internship experience with the internship advisor or the MPH program director. Responsibilities of the Student Student responsibilities for the internship include: Following the policies, rules, and regulations of the internship host agency or organization; Maintaining the agreed upon working hours; Maintaining a professional attitude and conduct; Seeking and accepting the preceptor s guidance and appraisal of performance throughout the internship period; Sharing with the preceptor any questions and concerns regarding the progress of the internship; Attending requested meetings and workshops; Maintaining an internship log and using this log to help produce detailed and thoughtful progress reports and the final reflection paper; Submitting to the internship host agency all agreed upon deliverables within the time frames indicated by the preceptor; and Providing the internship host agency with a copy of the student s final capstone project. The Capstone Seminar (PHE 790) The Capstone Seminar is taken in the fall semester following successful completion of PHE 770. Students must complete their internship hours before enrolling in PHE 790. The Capstone Seminar helps students to review and analyze the internship experience and to develop and complete a Capstone Project. The Capstone Project will ideally be based on the work completed during the internship. Some examples of the relationship between internships, deliverables, and Capstone Projects are listed below. 5

City University of New York School of Public Health Lehman College, Department of Health Sciences, MPH Program INFORMATION FOR INTERNSHIP HOST ORGANIZATIONS Purpose of the Internship Supervised internships are required of every MPH program nationwide and are a core component of the curriculum. The purpose of the public health internship is to provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real world settings and to develop professional skills and competencies. Types of Projects A wide variety of projects are appropriate but projects must have a public health orientation. Projects are based on the individual student s interests and goals and the needs of the sponsoring agency. Examples of projects include participation in a community needs assessment; development of a community health program; assistance on a public health research project; participation in an evaluation of a public health program; development of a grant proposal for a public health program. To maximize the educational experience, student work should involve something that has a clear beginning and end, and can be considered a self-contained project or component of a larger project, e.g., a needs assessment, a plan for a program, a grant proposal. While the work can involve such activities as a literature review or conducting interviews, the internship should not be limited to such a narrow scope. Responsibilities of the Host Organization The host organization is responsible for identifying a person with appropriate public health experience to serve as a preceptor for the student and for providing space and equipment needed to perform the work. In most cases, students are not expected to be paid although some organizations may be in a position to do so. Responsibilities of the Preceptor The preceptor is the key to a successful internship. The preceptor serves as both supervisor and mentor. Preceptors are expected to provide students with an orientation to the organization and project, meet with students regularly, and provide guidance and feedback. The preceptor is expected to have expertise in the area of the student s project so that proper guidance can be provided. Preceptors submit a written internship agreement specifying the expectations for the internship and complete an evaluation of the student s performance at the end of the internship. Responsibilities of Students Students are required to complete a total of 180 internship hours. Students are responsible for developing a scope of work for the internship in consultation with their preceptor and the faculty internship advisor. Students meet regularly with the preceptor to discuss progress and raise any questions or problems regarding the work. Students prepare progress reports to help them review and reflect on their experiences. Students are expected to treat the internship as they would any job and follow organizational policies and meet all commitments to the agency. During the academic year following the internship, students prepare a written capstone project based on the internship project that is used to fulfill academic requirements of the MPH program. Students are expected to share this written project with their preceptors. 9
