1 James Madison University Study Abroad in Egypt Summer 2007 Program Director: Kakahama Askary, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy and Religion, James Madison University Phone: or Phone number in Egypt: GHUM 252 Cross-Cultural Perspectives: Sacred Space; Religions of the Region from Antiquity to Present. Course Description General overview -- The proposed GHUM 252 Cross-Cultural Perspectives course will work within the framework of historical and religious traditions of the region: Sacred Space: Religions of the Region from Antiquity to Present. The 6 week class format, (including 3 days of orientation on JMU campus,) will be in interactive discussions; fieldtrips; interviews and, primarily, a guest lecture series. Cross-Cultural Perspectives Course Objectives With the goals of: providing opportunity to develop skills in communication and in critical and reflexive thinking; introducing multiple areas of knowledge, which are foundation for western civilization; and inviting you to consider yourself in a global perspective, citizens of a human community, through this class you will be able to: Observe and participate in exchange of cultures through exploration of sacred space and religious perspectives. Consider how art informs & is informed by cultural & religious values. Consider the motivations of art in conversation with the divine -- the creation of sacred space - and the historical and cultural record of such creation. Respond in an informed way to the form, structure and aesthetic qualities of artistic, literary and religious works. Identify and analyze similarities, differences and interrelationships among the fine arts, antiquities and objects of cultural value. Apply appropriate vocabulary and concepts for the description and analysis of artistic, literary, historical and philosophical or religious works. Explore the interrelationships among historical events and intellectual, artistic, literary and philosophical or religious movements and works. Explain how artistic and literary works from the past and present civilizations are individual expressions of cultural, historical and intellectual forces.

2 Articulate central philosophical and religious questions and the varying responses to them within different cultures. Experience a general orientation to living cultures of Egypt, identify diversity within the culture, appreciate and honor the cultural value systems and objects of cultural value. Reflect on your own cultural perspectives and consider the on-going exchange between your culture, cultures of Egypt and the world. Participate in meaningful exchange with the people of Egypt, serving as an informed and sensitive ambassador of good-will. Additionally, you will need to bring a journal, paper and writing instruments for this course. Grading Your final grade for this course is based on the following percentage distribution: Interviews: Conversation Partners & Host Family Exchange 10% Scrapbook/Journal 20% Cultural Exploration Summaries 20% Fieldtrip Observation Reports 25% Participation 25% Grades that may be attained in this course are: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, and F. What letter grades signify (source: JMU pg 30 Undergraduate Catalog): A..Superior B..Good C..Average D..Passing F..Failure Lecture Series, Readings & Discussions: You are required to attend a lecture once a week for 2.5 hours. Discussion with esteemed guest lecturers will follow. Make sure you come prepared to each lecture with questions or informed comment based on the assigned reading for the lecture/discussion. Lectures for GHUM 252 are each Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

3 Conversation Partners/Host Families (10% of overall course grade.) You will be required to meet once a week with a conversation partner or host family. Record your reflections and observation in your journal. You will be asked to report on your experience, on the cross-cultural communication and exchange. Cultural Exploration Summaries (20% of overall course grade) This option is a bit like a treasure hunt. You are required to visit and complete a summary for a minimum of 12 cultural explorations for the entire 6-week study in Egypt. Unlike the fieldtrips and Sunday evening outings where the class goes as a group, these cultural exploration opportunities are independent. Please see your agenda/study guide for summary sheets and details of this assignment. Fieldtrip Observation (Summary & Analysis) Reports (25% of overall course grade) Once a week, as a group, we will make an out-of-city, all day excursion to different sites of cultural & historical interest. You are required to write a one to three page summary and reflexive analysis of your experience. Your analysis must make connections to over-arching class discourse, (lectures and readings,) and your over-all cross-cultural experience. All-day fieldtrips are scheduled tentatively to take place each Friday. Your reports will be due at the beginning of the point of focus and exchange meeting each Sunday. For the extended excursions to Alexandria and Sinai, you are also required to write a report. Scrapbook/journal (20% of course grade) You are required to keep an on-going scrapbook/journal. The purpose of the scrapbook/journal is to provide opportunity for reflection and connection. Throughout your study abroad experience, you will be asked to make connections with our class discourse, your study in & of Egypt, cross-cultural exchanges and the larger world. You may choose to make the scrapbook/journal an especially interesting creative option and record of your experience, current events as they relate to you, Egyptian cultures, communication, religion, art, architecture, history, media, your own identity and culture, political history in the making, your own spiritual journey, etc. Your journal may be reflective, serving primarily as a record. For the scrapbook : in a notebook, journal or binder, please collect, organize and comment on articles, images, new clippings, photographs, movies, publications, brochures from cultural sites, etc. You are required to make a minimum of 5 entries per week. Point of Focus and Exchange (Included in participation grade) Once a week, (tentatively, each Sunday afternoon,) for 1.5 hours we will meet as a group. The Point of Focus and Exchange meetings will be an informal, facilitated discussion or activity. You will be asked to share scrapbooks/journals, to offer reflection on readings, to share observations & experiences, to present summaries of independent cultural explorations & to report on experiences with conversation partners or host families. The focus & exchange meetings will provide opportunity for problem solving and community building. Following each meeting, we will share a meal and then, as a group, we will go out to the theater, a concert or make some like excursion.

4 Participation & Attendance (25% of overall course grade) Attendance at all classes, lectures, fieldtrips, meetings and excursions is required. This is interactive class. In order for you to succeed in this class your thoughtful participation and regular attendance is essential. In this course you will be required to think critically and reflexively and to contribute respectfully. As we work together and develop a community of learning I will accept nothing less than an environment of civility Recognizing that personal faith experience and identity may serve as one framework from which to approach the topic of religion, in this course we set, overall, a framework of critical thinking. Each of us will be required to take risk in our thinking and to listen to one another s ideas respectfully and with consideration. Students will explore global political issues in context. Program includes travel to Bibliotheca Alexandria and time on the Mediterranean. Participants will have opportunities to meet esteemed religious, social and government leaders; opportunities to serve as ambassadors from the West; and opportunities to create meaningful relationships, visiting people in their homes and places of worship. Note about security & probable success of program: Program director s experience and strong ties across multiple communities in Egypt promise to provide program participants with additional security and unique access to esteemed religious, social and political leaders. The program director has been in contact with government and religious leaders in Egypt, introducing this new study abroad program. Response has been positive. There is great enthusiasm for the program with excitement about receiving the students as honored guests.
