1 Cross-Cultural Communication COM450 Instructor: Keith Dilbeck, [ (Please allow at least 24 business hours for a response)] Office: Johnston Hall 331, Office Hours: Monday & Wednesday, 3:30pm-4:30pm Course Director: Dr. Tae-seop Lim; Description of Course Content: This course explores the differences and similarities in cross-cultural communication by comparing different cultures, nations, and regions. It is designed to develop the student's competence communicating with people from different cultures. The practical and conceptual framework generally includes cultural variations in communication behaviors and motivations, cultural relativism and functionalism, verbal, and nonverbal communication across a variety of cultural contexts. Course Objectives: To enhance the students competence with cross-cultural communication by increasing awareness of 1) the problems of and difficulties with cross-cultural communication, 2) the relativity of culture, and the diversity of the ways of living, 3) the key theories in cross-cultural communication, including collectivism vs. individualism, elaborated vs. restricted codes, contextual sensitivity in communication, uncertainty avoidance, communication competence, etc., 4) specific methodologies for consulting on the compatibility among cultural differences and similarities, and 5) to enhance cross-cultural adaptability. IN SHORT, to learn about the variations of cultural groups in comparison to your own, in a way that promotes socio-cultural interactive compatibility. Textbook: None. All reading materials are uploaded on D2L, under the CONTENTS tab. Course Policies, Procedures and Format: 1. Classroom Behavior: Your instructor of this course has a strong commitment to the development and maintenance of an instructional climate that supports equality of opportunity and respect for differences based on gender, culture, ethnicity, disability, and sexual orientation. Your enrollment in this course assumes that you will treat your fellow classmates and instructor with respect. 2. Academic Misconduct: Academic misconduct will be carefully monitored in this course. Cheating on examinations, activities and written assignments (e.g., using someone else s material without proper citations, etc.) will result in immediate failure of this course. Collaboration during the writing process is encouraged, but individual final papers should represent your own work. Academic misconduct will be reported to the investigating officer of the College of Letters and Science and additional sanctions may be recommended. 3. Drop Policy: If you do not attend the first full week of this class, you may be dropped. You may drop this course with written approval of your instructor through the 1

2 date specified in the schedule of classes. After such dates, drop will be permitted only for reasons of extraordinary circumstances not related to academic performance in the course. To drop this course, you must obtain written permission from the instructor and must also file a written appeal with your school/college advising office. Only if the instructor and your school/college approve will such drops be permitted. 4. Incomplete: An incomplete may be given in lieu of a final grade. An incomplete is given if you have completed the course successfully until the end of the semester, but, due to illness or other unusual and substantiated causes beyond your control, you cannot complete the final papers or last test. You must be able to provide the instructor with written, verifiable, and acceptable proof of medical or family emergency. This proof must clearly indicate that the emergency prevented you from completing assignments. 5. Disabled Students: If you have a disability that will affect your performance in this course, you are responsible for contacting your instructor during the first week of class for any need of accommodations. 6. Religious observation: You will be allowed to complete graded assignments, examinations and other course requirements at an alternative date and time if your participation in a religious observation prevents you from completing the assignment on the scheduled date. You are responsible for contacting your instructor during the first week of class regarding the need to reschedule assignment dates. Evaluation Final grades will be based on two examinations, two research projects, out of class exercises, weekly assignments, discussion leading abilities, and participation. Grades will not be curved, but there may be opportunity to participate in extra credit. Students have one week to file complaints or talk to the instructor about grades after an assignment is handed back. Examinations: 10 Points Each Total 20 Points The midterm and final exam will consist of either multiple-choice questions, or essay responses consisting of two or more questions. The exam questions will be constructed from lecture material, readings, exercises, and class discussion. Both exams are cumulative. Cross-cultural Project One: 30 points for cumulative assignments + 20 Point presentation, totaling 50 points. The project is a systematic comprehensive exercise with a variety of cultural perspectives. Completing the project involves sequential step-by-step tasks. The first step is to analyze, in a group, a particular cultural exercise, and apply the theoretical tools from readings, lectures, and discussions. Group members experience describing culture by inferring about a variety of cultural, contextual aspects. The second step is to explore the cultural characteristics of the particular cultures of the surrounding groups, as to experience the differences and similarities of cross-cultural communication. In so doing, students are exposed to two basic methods to investigate cross-cultural communication (simple interviews, surveys). Students then analyze results, and develop a 2

3 professional analysis that details the discovered cross-cultural communication patterns. The third step, after having developed systematic explanations across the cultures within the exercise, students provide advice on increasing compatibility across the different cultures involved in the exercise. The fourth step is to provide a comprehensive presentation, describing a) the group s own culture, b) the differences/similarities across cultures, and c) a proposed cross-cultural consultation to increase compatibility. Generally, the overall project consists of two cross-cultural analyses, one for the group s own culture, and one for the other cultures, with the addition of a final consultation summary. Supplementary documents are provided for additional details! Project 1 Total 50 Points: Due Friday. March 24 Group Culture Description Due Wednesday, Feb 5 10points Theoretical Explanation Due Wednesday, Feb 12 Interview/Survey Due Wednesday, Feb 19 10points Explanation of Results Due Wednesday, Feb 26 10points Compatibility/Advice Due Wednesday, Mar 12 20points Presentation/Discussion Due Monday, Mar 24 Project Two Cultural Consultant: 30 points for cumulative assignments + 20 Point panel discussion for a total of 50 points. For the second project assignment, students follow a similar format as project one (describe cultural context, explain with theory, provide advice); except, this time students do it more realistically. Individually, students choose a community from a culture different than their own to contact (out of class) that exists in a location of their choice outside of the U.S. Students then develop a Cultural Consultation Document for someone desiring to visit their chosen culture. The process involves a) communicating with a member of the chosen culture to interview and develop a cultural context, b) apply course material to theoretically explain/describe the chosen culture, c) lead an in-class panel discussion, and d) provide a complete consultation document to advise on compatibility across cultures for those whom may visit the chosen culture in the future. Supplementary documents are provided for additional details! NOTE: This is a research project. As such, it is important to test how much you understand certain cultural concepts, but it is also important to weigh how thoroughly you investigate and write about the given topic. Therefore, the number of facts found, the number and diversity of sources cited are of utmost importance in considering grading evaluations. 4 At any time and location (outside of class), behave differently than the expected by members of the culture here in the USA. Generally, make note of 1) the specific behaviors you performed differently than were expected from the cultural surroundings, 2) the response(s) from those participating in the interaction with you, and 3) use course material to explain the outcomes of the responses from others. One at a time, students write in essay format (using sub-headers for each theory), no more than 5 to 6 pages (font size 12/font type Times New Roman/ double space, 1 inch margins, no spaces between paragraphs) -- a) Define the 5 (one at a time/separate events) cultural theories you chose b) Explain the behaviors you believe others expect of you c) Sequentially explain how you behaved differently, and how others responded d) Use course material to explain the outcomes of others behaviors Most importantly, use course material (theory) to explain each outcome of your interactions!!! Generally, students need to clearly define the 5 cultural theories they chose, accurately describe the behaviors of self and other(s), and finally make theoretical inferences about the motivations of the observed behaviors. Reports should be between 5-6 pages of academic, scholarly writing. Of course, the performance of this assignment must adhere to appropriate legal and ethical standards. Total 30points: Due Friday, April 4 Each chosen aspect should include accurately described behaviors and coherently explained motivations, explained by course material 5 well defined cultural norms 10points Behavioral expectations and sequences 10points Theoretical explanation of outcomes 10points Incorrect format/3 or more writing errors -20 points Weekly Exercises: Students choose one peer reviewed, academic article/publication from the field of communication, which relates to the theoretical framework of the relevant topic for the current week. Articles that discuss theory not addressed in class or in the reading must at least come from the field of Communication, and be discussed with the instructor ahead of time. Once the article is chosen, students are to write a 600 word (+/- 10 words) account of 1) how the article relates to the week s topic(s), and 2) provide an explanation of how the behaviors and motivations apply to personal real life situations. Submitted work must include an APA citation of both the chosen article, and any other necessary work used in the submitted assignment. Supplementary documents are provided for additional details! Total 50 points (10pnts each): Due Friday of all weeks marked with an ** on the schedule matrix at the end of this document. Submit all work to the D2L dropbox folder. 4

Students are permitted to miss one class period as a free day. TEN points will be deducted off the final grade for each class missed after the free day. Being tardy is strongly discouraged as latecomers disrupt the flow of the class and act as a distraction to others. Arriving after attendance has been called, or leaving early is valued the same as being absent. Attendance will be called randomly, and the probability of students earning a passing grade in Com450 without attending is considerably low. Participation is expected of each student. Each class period, students are required to come prepared for active class engagement (i.e., answer questions, ask questions, comment). Class participation may be gauged on the completion of an in-class reflection paper, or a pop-quiz that is to be turned in at the end of class for credit. Finally, participation grades are evaluated in conjunction with attendance as one complete grade. In addition, participation grades are based on mutual respect with others in the classroom. Because discussion is of great value to learning in this class, students must be respectful to not only the instructor, but also to other students. (Attendance = 25pnts, Participation = 25pnts) = a total of 50pnts Electronic File Format All submitted work must be formatted in either a Word (.doc) or Power Point (.ppt) format. Other file formats (e.g.,.docx,.pages,.wps) are not accepted. If you use an unacceptable format, the written work will not be evaluated and you will receive zero as a score. Additionally, unless reported by D2L, failed attempts to submit work are the responsibility of the student. Late Work Late work will not be accepted in this course!!!
