The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium
For 2001 revenues of more than USD 6.4 billion are predicted for the e-commerce sector. (Forrester Research) At present there are approximately 117 million mobile phone users in the European Union. (Forrester Research) Users (Millions) Worldwide Growth of E-Commerce Users 800 Mobile ecommerce Users 700 Fixed ecommerce Users mobile commerce... is the driving force in e-commerce. The increasing convergence of mobile telecommunications and Internet as well as the growing number of added value services for mobile devices will result in a new e-commerce boom. This is the consensus of leading market research and consulting companies. The so-called Mobile Commerce, that means "trading via mobile", transcends both time and space. Investigations reveal that the worldwide growth in Mobile Commerce will grow faster than the traditional e-commerce. According to The Arc Group more than 700 million mobile customers will participate in mobile commerce by Users (Millions) Year Source: The Arc Group Growth of the Mobile Phone Market Worldwide mobile phones... will be the e-business Enablers of the future. The continuously growing number of mobile users demonstrates that more and more users want to benefit from these advantages. This new generation of customers does not only wish to perform calls but surf on the Internet and use electronic services. According to Forrester Research, by 2004, 219 million users will access the Internet via mobile phone. Thus, the mobile phone will evolve into a "medium without any limitations" in e-business Source: Dataquest Asia Pacific Europe USA ROW
In Germany this number will mushroom to more than 24 million in (Plica Marktforschungsanalyse) More than 75 percent of new handsets shipped in 2004 will be Bluetooth-enabled. It will be one of the strongest drivers in the adoption of e-commerce in Europe. (Gartner Group) By 2003 the British investment group Durlacher Research predicts a turnover of approximately Euro 23 billion in the European mobile commerce market that will only be achieved by banking, electronic purchases or advertisements via mobile. (Durlacher Research) M-Commerce Key Technology Enablers Penetration in % ,4 WAP GPHS UMTS 50,7 35,3 22,0 8,9 10,0 1,3 0,2 1,7 0,2 2, Year Source: Durlacher Research new technologies... facilitate innovative mobile applications. The use of mobile phones for the implementation of electronic business transactions is additionally boosted by increasingly new technologies. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) or Bluetooth: New technological developments are announced daily. This development also facilitates completely new and innovative applications in the mobile e-business sector. 25 M-Commerce Market Europe the foundation of..."the Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium" opens up new potentials for e-business. The demand for complex e-business applications integrating mobile devices is continuously increasing. However, the infrastructure required for this is still insufficient. This problem and the incomplete process chains have an impact on the quality and security expectations of the consumers. The use of the mobile digital signature with a mobile device maximizes the quality and security of transactions. Resolving the current infrastructure problems and generating a standard to integrate mobile digital signatures into e-business applications were decisive factors for the foundation of "The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium. billion 20 CAGR=235% +80% % 5 +39% +163% +406% year Source: Durlacher 2003
Increasing capabilities of devices like smart cards or mobile phones and the careful implementation of suitable algorithms (like the ones based on elliptic curves) make it possible to use strong cryptography even in such restricted environments. (cv cryptovision) the consortium... is an association of international companies. The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium is an association of companies and organisations from the mobile phone and Internet sectors. The specific knowhow consolidated in the Consortium by its members (Mobile Operators, Internet, Smart Cards, PKI, etc.) is an excellent basis for the development of a secure, cross-application infrastructure for the use of the mobile digital signature. The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium is an association of companies with international orientation. It targets at the development of a standard accepted worldwide. the vision... is the use of mobile devices as e-business Enablers. The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium assumes that the current separation of mobile telecommunications and Internet will not last. The isolated use of various electronic distribution channels does no longer correspond to the demands of consumers for integrated, mobile offerings and services. In fact, consumers demands are increasingly directed towards applications that adapt to the current situation of the user and that provide a high level of convenience. This requires cross-channel usability and medium-adequate application. In addition, it is necessary to establish legal security for the performed transactions. Only by using the legally effective digital signature it will be possible to perform business via electronic channels in secure and understandable form. By using mobile devices for the electronic signature, mobile phones turn into the e-business Enabler of the future.
Genion, the cellular phone which can be used at home and en route, is to be further developed into a multi-function mobile terminal by VIAG Interkom. Digitial signatures play a vital role in this development. VIAG Interkom will be particpating in this project as an active member of the Consortium. (VIAG Interkom) The mobile digital signature facilitates generation of secure and legally effective service offerings and increases the acceptance of mobile applications by customers. (BROKAT) In the future, the end customers expect electronic services that are integrated and that can be used anywhere. Internet and mobile telephony will be merging and form a reasonable combination of distribution channels. (e-plus) Smart Cards are the ultimate portable security medium and therefore best suitable for the use of the mobile digital signature. (GEMPLUS)
Digital Signatures will enable authentification of partners, authenticity and originality of the transmitted information as well as confidentiality of the communication. We will support the Consortium and contribute to the definition of a worldwide standard for mobile digital signatures. (Deutsche Telekom) The wireless industry is entering the mobile commerce arena, with secure solutions based on the tamper-proof smard card already in place. With the support of the Consortium, customers can expect very soon an easy-to-use and secure solution to access e-commerce while on the move. (Schlumberger) the objective... of The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium is to establish and develop a secure cross-application infrastructure for the deployment of mobile digital signatures. To achieve this objective, key players of the mobile telecommunications and Internet sectors will define a standard that facilitates the integration of the mobile phone and of other mobile devices into the current online world. It is the unanimous objective of all members to gain worldwide acceptance of this standard. Due to the increasing integration of mobile telecommunications and Internet, it will be possible in the future to generate services that create a real added value for the consumer by integrating the mobile digital signature. the target groups... are Application Providers requiring legally effective valid business processes. The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium will support Application Providers that require a legally effective statement of the customer to perform their business. Among these are providers of bespoke, critical services with a high level of security, e.g. banks, insurance companies, lotteries as well as trading agencies for upscale products. The standard to be developed will be freely available so that it can be integrated into already existing applications or be considered in the development of new and innovative applications.
Our vision is that the user can access personalized services anytime, anywhere via the mobile phone. Since the mobile phone is one of the most personal devices people carry around, it is ideally suited as a signing device, securely identifying the user in various mobile commerce applications. (Siemens) Mobile phones provide outstanding qualities compared to other distribution channels. They provide the user with the opportunity of personalized services to be accessed anywhere. (Mannesmann) Electronic services are already available using mobile phones conveniently and regardless of the time of day. The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium provides long-term support for the global partnerships needed in the mobile e-commerce business. We are pleased of having the opportunity to participate. (Sonera SmartTrust) your participation... requires proactive co-operation. The expectations towards the members are high: they actively co-operate in various teams and attend the meetings on a regular basis. Efficient co-operation is the basis for meeting the set goals fast. our work... is focused on the development of a secure, cross-application standard. The Consortium is dedicated to work out a signature standard within the framework of regular meetings which will be the basis for convergent applications in mobile telecommunications and Internet. Several teams exist that are determined to solve specific tasks. The results of the individual teams will be documented and can be obtained via mailing lists and be accessed via the web sites of The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium for all members. further information... please refer to our web sites. The work of the The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium is accompanied by various activities: it is planned to participate in fairs and other events to consolidate familiarity. Furthermore, publications such as Technical and Business White Papers will present state-of-the-art information on current developments. Members as well as the interested public can obtain information on our web sites at
