1 Cycling Safety Policy, Rules, Procedure and Etiquette V5 Purpose Cycling is an enjoyable activity that can have significant health benefits. Yet, like other physically active sports, cycling has many inherent risks. These risks can be mitigated through the use of properly fitted and maintained equipment, by obeying traffic laws, by understanding proper bike etiquette when riding in a group, and most importantly, by always paying attention while cycling. Policy Cyclists must obey all school cycling rules and all directives given by coaches. Coaches must ensure cyclists under their control obey all school cycling rules and demonstrate good bike etiquette. Coaches are responsible for selecting safe routes mindful of road hazards and match the riding ability of cyclists in their squads. Where possible risks and hazards should be eliminated, avoided, or minimised. See Routes to be avoided section, below. Accidents or near misses must be reported to the Cycling Manager within 24 hours of the event occurring, using the Cycling Accident/Near miss form attached. All cyclists and coaches must attend the safety briefing held in term one, if scheduled. School Cycling Rules Cyclists using public roads must obey all traffic rules. An approved cycling helmet must be worn at all times. When cycling on public roads a fluoro cycling vest must be worn at all times. During term two and term three bikes must be fitted with a forward facing white light and a rear facing red light. Lights must be turned on when cyclists leave the school grounds. Group training rides will comprise of no more than eight cyclists (excluding coaches & parent helpers) and a coach or parent helper must be present on all group rides. Unless instructed by coaches/parent helper all group riding will be in single file. On group rides coaches/parent helper will carry a mobile phone and have Mrs. Amy Hackers emergency contact number.
2 Team time trialling will only be done on sections of road approved by the Cycling Manager Bike Etiquette Be predictable. Call out your intentions, e.g. slowing, stopping, etc. Use hand signals. Call out and point to hazards e.g. Hole! Rough Road! Car Back! Glass! Gravel! etc. Immediately single- up when you hear car- back and repeat the warning so that riders in front of you are alerted. Stop to regroup after crossing a traffic light controlled intersection so that riders who may not have been able to make the light will not be encouraged to cross on the red. Members must be courteous and share the road with motorized vehicles, pedestrians and other cyclists. This includes riding single file on busy roads, singling up quickly when "car back" is called, and leaving gaps in long pace lines to allow vehicles to safely pass. See attachments for passing protocol. Routes to avoid Avoid leaving the school grounds via the Cherrington and Boarding House exits onto River road. This requires an up hill, right hand turn, across traffic on the busy River Rd. Avoid heading north via the Wairere Drive round about. Wairere Drive is nominally 70km and cars tend to pass through this round about at speed. It is difficult to get a group across this round about. Avoid riding west of the Waikato River. This requires crossing State Highway One, a busy road with open road speed limits. Attachments; Accident Procedure Incident/Near miss form Passing Protocol
3 Accident Procedure All Coaches/helpers to carry a mobile phone. In the event of an accident: Coach/helper to ensure safety of all other cyclists eg: move all cyclists off the road and if possible make the traffic aware there has been an accident by flagging it down a distance from the accident. If the injury to the cyclist is deemed to be of a severe nature: 1) Coach/helper to ring 111 and call for an ambulance. 2) Give precise location of the accident and condition of the cyclist. 3) Provide care to the injured cyclist as much as able to. If the injury to the cyclist is not deemed to be in serious condition: 1) Coach/helper to ring Mrs Amy Hacker on the school emergency number ) Advise the name of the cyclist. 3) Give precise location of the accident and the condition of the cyclist. 4) Mrs Hacker will contact the parents/caregivers of the injured cyclist to organise assistance and collection of child. In the event that a coach or helper is injured most senior rider in the group to follow the procedure above.
