After the presentatin, District Judge Albert McCaig, Jr. presented the current status f the cunty s indigent defense plan, prcedures plicies. McCaig stated during his presentatin, I welcme an assessment believe we will be shwn t be in cmpliance with state laws. McCaig added that five additinal magistrates, a team frm TIDC, has assessed Cunty s Indigent Defense Plan, making sure the plan is current n laws. Judge McCaig stated that numerus internal cntrl measures are used t ensure the cunty is in cmpliance with the Indigent Defense plan by the Cunty Auditr, District Clerk, District Attrney, Cntract Attrneys in the prcess f cmpliance. Of curse, gd legal cunsel is als integral t any plan. Cunty has 10 indigent attrneys, a diverse team cnsisting f three Spanish language speakers three African Americans, a mixture f male female advcates, wh have a ttal cmbined average experience f 22.4 years, added McCaig. Cunty has a large percentage f indigent cases. In 2015, the cunty prsecuted 572 felnies, f which 336 were indigent cases r abut 42% f cases presented t the curt. Cmmissiner Pct. 2, Russell Klecka requested that the curt direct Cunty Auditr, Alan Yunts, t cnduct a thrugh audit f the whereabuts f weapns bught r maintained by the Cunty Sheriff s Office, a review f weapns transfers. Klecka stated that he had been cncerned abut the weapns since a sm arsenal f guns was stlen frm the Cunty Sheriff s vehicle utside a Saltgrass Steakhuse near Katy, which have yet t be recvered. Yunts stated that he had never been apprached by the cmmissiner in regards t his cncerns abut the weapns stated that an auditr is independent cannt be directed by the curt t perm an audit, as per Klecka s request. By law, the Cunty Auditr is cmpletely independent t avid a plitical use f his ffice.
