School of Art & Design Photography Masterclass Contemporary Landscape Practice and Fine Printing
Nottingham Trent University Dating from 1843, the School of Art & Design at Nottingham Trent University is one of the most established and respected centres of creative excellence in the United Kingdom. Our interactive, multidisciplinary ethos combines the experience of learning with real processes, practical skills, theory, critical evaluation and communication. Photography at Nottingham Trent University The photography programme at NTU has been in existence for over 75 years. It has evolved over time, starting as a course for commercial photographers and then, in the 1960s, developing as one of the first art photography programmes. Under the leadership of Thomas Joshua Cooper and then Paul Hill, Nottingham Trent photography gained an enviable reputation. Inspiration for the programme was largely from the USA and the work of the late 1970s and early 1980s was characteristically black and white landscape photography. During the 1980s colour photography grew in popularity and the programme of study was evenly divided between art photography and documentary work. Issue based photographic practices developed and, from the beginning of the 1990s, a new programme, Photography in Europe, was launched which exposed students to influences from the continent. Studio work, portraiture and fashion photography came back into the syllabus and new hybrid practices have flourished. In 1997 the annual degree show was developed into a festival of photography along the lines of the Paris Mois de la Photo and the Mesiac Fotographie Slovensko. For the past ten years the BA (Hons) Photography programme has had an excellent reputation for creative graduates who go on to become successful in all fields of contemporary photography. 01 Photography Masterclass
Photography Masterclass The Photography Masterclass offers you the chance to work with some of the leading landscape photographers in Europe, in the surroundings of NTU s multi-million pound, purpose-built art and design building. The emphasis of the course is on black and white landscape photography and fine darkroom printing and techniques, and will appeal to enthusiasts and those wishing to refine their skills. Working with leading British landscape photographers, you will work at capturing and exploring aspects of rural landscape. The expertise and input of this course is drawn from practitioners at the cutting edge of photography and publishing. The Masterclass will include guided workshops, one-to-one portfolio evaluations, guidance in advanced darkroom techniques and seminars with expert practitioners in the field of contemporary landscape photography. The schedule will include: advice on your current portfolio; opportunity to shoot on location with expert photographers; use of our large format cameras (equipment provided); printing in our black and white darkrooms under expert supervision; discussions and seminar presentations on work; one-to-one and group tutorials. 02 Photography Masterclass
Biography of lecturers John Davies Born in Sedgefield, County Durham, in 1949, John Davies studied photography at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic. In the 1970s his first photographs were landscape studies of rural Britain and in 1981 he began an ongoing documentation of urban Britain, concentrating on the changing industrial and post-industrial landscape. He has published several books of photographs, The British Landscape being his latest (Chris Boot, 2006). This series has been exhibited at PhotoEspana and at the National Museum of Photography Film and Television, Bradford. His photographs have been widely exhibited, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Pompidou Centre, Paris; the Royal Academy of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. John was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Award in John Davies s work belongs to the world of contemporary documentary photography. Faithful to a refined, pure black and white, taken on as the absolute rule of a subtle, analytic style. He chooses the vastness of space inhabited by the powerful elements of nature and the contradictory ones of culture to operate in two directions. On the one hand, the evocation of emotional states through the photographic rendering of a space-light that is alive, almost metaphysical, and recalls the symbolisation of the forces of nature in Turner. On the other, a crystal-clear gaze that sounds the material aspects of the contemporary landscape which is tied to the development of the productive activities and concrete structuring of the world through the molding power of economy and property. Roberta Valtorta Photographic Historian and Professor at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Milan Photography Masterclass
Simon Roberts Simon Roberts graduated with a first-class BA (Hons) Degree in Human Geography from the University of Sheffield (1996) followed by a Distinction in Photojournalism from the NCTJ, Sheffield College (1997). His photographs have been exhibited widely with recent shows at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai. They are represented in major public and private collections, including the Deutsche Börse Art Collection, George Eastman House and Wilson Centre for Photography. In recognition of his work, Roberts has received several awards including the Vic Odden Award from the Royal Photographic Society (2007) offered for a notable achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer, and a grant from the John Kobal Foundation (2008). Most recently he has been commissioned as the election artist by the Speaker s Advisory Committee on Works of Art at the House of Commons to produce an official record of the 2010 British general election. He has published two monographs, Motherland (Chris Boot, 2007) and We English (Chris Boot, 2009). A major exhibition of photographs from We English will be on show at the National Media Museum, Bradford (UK) until September 2010 and a combination of both Motherland and We English featured in NTU s Bonington Gallery earlier this year. Roberts is represented by The Photographers Gallery in London and Klompching Gallery in New York Photography Masterclass
