2 Now more than ever, the world needs gifted young leaders prepared to step up and solve a host of critical problems facing the globe. Our businesses need new ideas and strategies, our governments need leaders willing to compromise, our schools need talent to drive reform, and our communities need servants ready to innovate and work for a better future. Howard University has an extensive history of cultivating leaders who have proceeded on to serving on local, national, and even international levels. These positions obtained have allowed for not only individual advancement for the Howard alumnae, but established the foundation for others to build themselves upon and become even greater. The positions held include: First African American United States Supreme Court Justice First African American United States Governor (Virginia) Mayor (most notably Washington, DC; Atlanta, GA; Richmond, VA; New York, NY) Governor General (Barbados) Governor (United States Virgin Islands) Ambassador (to Trinidad & Tobago, Malaysia, and Mauritius) Prime Minister (Grenada) President (Guyana) Premier, Bermuda Howard University is committed to creating global leaders... as well as impacting all areas of economic, social, and cultural progress in the 21st century. Howard strives to exemplify the excellence exhibited by our storied predecessors while continuing to expand its reach from the Nation's capital to communities around the globe. To achieve this goal, students, faculty, and the administration have collaborated to support a collection of first year student leaders who, since their arrival at Howard, have shown the initiative, intellect, and leadership abilities necessary to become the next class of global leaders: The Freshman Leadership Academy. Seeking to build upon the success of the previous classes of the Academy, it is currently hoped to emulate and expand the breadth of knowledge and global awareness gained through the annual cultural immersion trip to East Asia. In 2012, the Academy focused on global environmental challenges, which allowed them to connect with the Environmental Protection Agency s Office of International Affairs to study the their program in the Asia Pacific. The Academy also met with environmental leaders in Shanghai and toured a smart city in Kashiwa, China with students and faculty from the University of Tokyo. In 2013, partnerships have been created with local and multi-national organizations to provide work opportunities in five various sectors for the participants and a week-long service-learning project with the goal of broadening the students experience in China has been arranged.

3 2013 TRIP INFORMATION Dates: Friday, July 19 - Sunday, August 11, 2013 WHO 45 members of the Freshman Leadership Academy & 4 university chaperons This year, the university will partner with several businesses in Shanghai to offer students internships in five different sectors. Students will also participate in a week-long service project, study Mandarin, and complete a research project. PURPOSE Howard University is dedicated to expanding the horizons of its students and providing opportunities to study and work in countries around the globe. Through the Freshman Leadership Academy, first year students are given a unique opportunity to explore countries in East Asia to become more aware of international economic policies, study language and culture, and expand their knowledge and perception on leadership in the Eastern World. Previous classes have visited universities in China and Japan, studied Mandarin Chinese, and traveled to a number of local businesses. COST $202,500 for 45 members Individually, each student pays $4, Cost includes travel, lodging, and some meals. THE ACADEMY In its third year of existence, the Student Affairs Freshman Leadership Academy has quickly developed into one of the most sought after programs on campus for first year students. The Academy consists of four components: bi-monthly workshops facilitated by administrators, alumni, and community leaders; case studies/group projects; mentorship from upperclassmen student leaders/alumni; and an international cultural exchange in East Asia. Students are also encouraged to study a critical language (a number of students are currently enrolled in introductory Mandarin courses). One goal of the Leadership Academy is to prepare and encourage students to pursue international scholarships, fellowships, study abroad, and in internships/full-time job opportunities. A number of "alumni" have already reached this goal, as the academy currently has three students studying in London, England (one as a Luard Scholar) and two students have completing internships in China as well as students studying and working in various countries across the globe. The Freshman Leadership Academy (FLA) was created to expose first year students to the specific duties, responsibilities, opportunities, and challenges associated with all aspects of student leadership, and is open to all freshmen and transfer students at the university.
