If you do not have you re your own computer with an Internet connection, you can perform these steps from any computer in the Churchill Lab, D Amour Library, School of Law Library, or any other publicly available computer with Internet access on or off campus. Verify your User ID Your User ID will most likely be a combination of two (2) letters followed by six (6) numbers. For example, John Smith s user ID could be js In some circumstances a User ID will be made up of the first letter of your first name and the first seven (7) letters of your last. You should have received an or letter indicating you re your User ID. To look up your User ID go to Activate your User ID If you re a new student, staff or faculty member logging in for the first time you must activate your User ID by setting a password. Follow the Change your Password procedure below. If you have already changed your password at least one time, and find it necessary to reset or change your password, your old password will be the number nine (9), the two (2) digit month of your birth, the two (2) digit day of your birth, and the last four (4) digits of your Social Security Number. (ie: 9mmddxxxx). Change your password To change your password, go to You will be directed to an Acceptable Use Standards and Policies agreement. Once you have read the agreement thoroughly, either click I AGREE TO FOLLOW or I DISAGREE at the bottom of the page. If you click, I DISAGREE you will be directed to a screen explaining reasons for you to reconsider the agreement. This will then bring you back to the Acceptable Use Standards and Policies agreement page. You will not be allowed access to any secure systems until you agree to follow the Acceptable Use Standards and Policies. 4
5 After clicking I AGREE TO FOLLOW you will be able to change your password. The following screen will appear: First, enter your User ID. Then enter your old password. Your Old Password is the number nine (9), the two (2) digit month of your birth, the two (2) digit day of your birth, and the last four (4) digits of your Social Security Number (9MMDDSSSS. 7 Western New England University Network Access Wired Access to the Network: All residence halls are wired for a high-speed connection to the Internet. There is at least one network jack per student. (A network jack looks somewhat like a standard phone jack, except it s larger). To make use of this network connection, your computer must have an Ethernet port. You ll also need an Ethernet cable to connect from the card in the back of your computer to the wall jack. If you have a network set up at home you may need to make some changes to your network settings. If you get a new computer, the network connection should work right out of the box. The Customer Support and Operations (CSO) group of the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) department, located on the third floor of Churchill Hall, will be available to assist with installations for incoming students. Please call to schedule assistance. Staff and faculty computers are all attached via the wired network, and network authorization is centrally managed within the OIT department. These computers should never be moved or plugged into a different network jack without the involvement of the OIT department. If you have any questions regarding network connectivity, please feel free to call the Service Desk at x2200 or, if you are calling from off campus,
8 Wireless Access to the Internet: 1) If your laptop is wireless enabled, you should notice a Wireless Network connection box pop-up when you turn your computer on. 2) Double click on this popup and select either WNE or WNEGuest as your wireless network and click the box that says Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network then click connect. Note that the WNE network requires the authentication described below. Although the WNEGuest network does not require authentication, access to some University systems may be limited or denied from that network. 3) Log in using your User ID and password: 4) You are now connected to the network. You must keep your computer from going into sleep mode, otherwise you may lose your connection. 8

13 Academic Computing Resources Computer Labs There are computers available for student use on the Western New England University campus. All computers have the Microsoft Office Suite installed, which includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. Most computers are Windows systems and are connected to the Internet. Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers are installed. Printers are also available in all labs. Important note: All publicly available and classroom computers have configuration protection software installed. This software resets the computer to its original state when rebooted. When rebooted, all files that were deleted will re-appear, all files that were added will be deleted, all files modified will return to their original state and all configuration and setting changes will be reverted. To save your work you must use a portable storage device such as a USB thumb drive. We highly recommend that you reboot before starting to work on any public or classroom computer so that modifications made prior to your arrival will not jeopardize the stability and performance of the computer. The Electrical, Industrial, Biomedical, and Mechanical Engineering Labs, located in Sleith Hall are dedicated for use by engineering majors, and a lab in the school of Law Library is reserved for use by School of Law students. Similarly the Math Lab in Herman Hall is sometimes made available to Mathematics and Computer Science students when it is not being used for classes. FAQs Considerations to help with computer purchase decisions If you re thinking of buying a new computer to bring to the University, it might help you to consider the following: Do I need a Computer? Western New England University does not require students to own a computer. There are more than 300 computers available for student use in the labs and libraries on campus. So if the expenditure is a burden, it is possible to get along without having your own personal computer while you are a student here. Windows or Mac? The University computing environment is primarily Windows-based so if you are going to buy a computer for your studies, you ll have an easier time if you purchase a computer that runs Microsoft Windows. If you have a relatively new Mac (Intel-based), your Mac will probably serve you fine in most majors. What is your intended area of study? Even if you have not decided on a major, you might already know that you are likely to pursue an area of study that will require more computer use than others. For instance, Computer Science and Engineering majors will probably want more processing speed and memory. Business students and Social Sciences students should also expect to spend quite a lot of time working on a computer. All students should be able to run the Microsoft Office Suite on their machines. Some rules of thumb: A good entry level computer should have a Core 2 Duo processor, with at least 2.0GHz of processor speed. More processing power will make your computer response time faster. You should have at least 4 GB of RAM, but you might be more satisfied with 8GB. The amount of RAM affects the number of applications you can have open without reducing the computer s response time. Be aware that average file sizes are increasing, so computer users will need more storage space. If you are buying a new computer, you should have at least 120 GB of storage space on your hard drive and should seriously consider an external drive for backups. Will you use your computer for both academic and recreational purposes? Many users will want to use their computers for recreational purposes as well as for academic applications. If you are a fan of gaming, you will want more processing power. Also, more RAM will give you more options when it comes to video, graphics, and music. Laptop or Desktop? 16
17 Laptops tend to be more expensive but are considerably more convenient. Many students prefer the convenience of being able to take their computer with them. The OIT service desk offers support at no charge however they don t make house calls, so if you feel this is a benefit you might take advantage of a laptop would be easier to carry over. If you are thinking about a laptop you might want to consider the weight of the computer, depending on what you are comfortable carrying. You should also be sure to purchase a locking kit to protect yourself from theft. Desktops can provide good computing power with a lower price tag. What about wireless? Yes, we have wireless network access points in various buildings around campus so you might want to consider buying a wireless capable computer. What do I do if I don t know my User ID? You can visit and you will be able to retrieve your User ID using your last name and one of the following: student ID, faculty ID, or badge ID. You can also call the OIT Service Desk at x2200 from on campus or from off - campus for assistance. What do I do if I forget my password? You can visit and you will be able to reset your password using your User ID, birth date, and one of the following: student ID, faculty ID, or badge ID. You will also need to know the answer to the secret question you provided when you changed your password last. If you have trouble, the OIT Service Desk can assist you at x2200 from on campus or from off campus. Where is the Service Desk located? The Service Desk is located on the third floor of Churchill Hall. Churchill Hall is located across from Deliso Hall, near the gazebo. For a campus map, go to: and scroll down to the Campus option on the left side navigation bar. 17
