4 VEOLIA TRANSPORT commitment 1 6 Veolia Transport commitment Integrate all transit systems into their regional context 2 Provide a seamless mobility chain Our expertise in transit systems and our involvement in urban, suburban and regional development enable us to design, build and operate efficient mobility solutions. ENSURE OPTIMAL COVERAGE Encourage the sharing of urban space We design transit systems as a key tool in urban planning. When we restructure mobility systems, our aim is to use urban space to the fullest and restore social diversity. Create systems that meet local needs Our systems are designed to meet people s needs and answer the requirements of urbanization and regional development. We operate the systems in accordance with the CLE principle: Clarity of the transit system, Legibility and Efficiency. Experts in mode integration We interconnect buses, coaches, light rail, ferries, maritime shuttles, and systems that operate on reserved infrastructure such as trains, metros and Bus Rapid Transit. We are also developing complementary personalized services, including car-sharing, self-service bicycles and transportation on demand. To achieve seamless movement between the different transit systems, the mobility chain must be properly managed. Veolia Transport s offer is based on connecting all the transportation modes and making transit systems more attractive. PUT THE EMPHASIS ON MODE INTEGRATION Integration of several modes of transportation within a metropolitan area: bus-train-taxis, bus-light rail-bus, maritime shuttles, and so on. Creation of transit hubs offering passengers a range of conveniences while making their connection. Information delivered in multiple forms: display screens in vehicles and at waiting points, Internet and text messaging services, etc. Veolia Transport offers full service through its mobility centers (information, bookings, ticket sales, complaints handling). Introduction of interoperable ticketing systems that cover both regional rail and urban transit services. Development of integrated fare systems, enabling several transportation modes to be used at an attractive price. RAIL 2,397 passenger trains The Ligne d Azur system an exemplary case 230 systems have a trip planner / 501 park-and-ride facilities (out of 42 units audited) 382 million trips provided On behalf of the Nice-Côte d Azur urban authorities, Veolia Transport designed a transit system with six networks serving 24 communities and seven transportation-on-demand routes to reinforce the regular bus system of nearly 100 routes. A light rail system was introduced with 21 stations along a 9 kilometer stretch, thus providing the backbone for restructuring the entire system. The recent construction of four park-and-ride facilities connecting with the light rail and bus systems has improved transfer between private cars and public transportation. A passenger survey conducted at the end of 2008 found a 92% satisfaction rate. Limburg Province s multimodal system Veolia Transport has been operating the regional trains, urban and inter-city buses and taxis of this Dutch province since The system was designed to meet passengers requirements; rail service is the backbone, to which is added buses, taxi service for low-density residential areas and ToD services. A call center and Web site complete the offer. In the space of two years, ridership increased 43% on the southbound train line, and the passenger satisfaction rate for urban bus service reached 8.3 out of 10.
5 Veolia Transport commitment 3 8 Veolia Transport commitment Guarantee high-quality service for all passengers 4 Place our employees at the heart of our projects Passengers are Veolia Transport s core focus, and we take an on-the-ground approach to learning about their expectations. We motivate our people to adhere to our corporate Vision by ensuring their safety and training, and sharing experiences. MAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION THE PREFERRED CHOICE MAKE OUR VALUES COME TO LIFE Qualitative studies on passenger satisfaction and the specific needs of certain customer segments enable us to develop transportation solutions that meet passengers expectations and suit their life styles. DUBLIN 76 % of customers satisfied (+10%) NANCY 95 % of the personnel A stringent quality policy, including rapid, personalized complaints handling, the designation of quality correspondents in the main operating countries and service certifications. Relationships based on direct interaction with our passengers in order to learn what they think about our quality commitments and transportation plans, and to find out what they want in their own words. The Going for Green program for excellence in customer relations The priority is safety for all, both employees and passengers, through preventive actions and training. Foster a feeling of belonging to the company by encouraging exemplary initiatives, involving personnel in our quality policy and building constructive relationships with labor unions. GENDER BREAKDOWN : M: 79.6 % F: % Improve access to training and skills transmission by offering professionalization programs at Campus Veolia Environnement, and ensuring the integration of employees of all ages and cultures by facilitating experience sharing. 23,038 new hires in 2008 (including 1,966 new jobs created) 2 million hours of training (including 586,079 in safety) Maintain the social contact that public transportation creates and that enables operators to be involved in local actions, particularly to combat poor behavior. trained consider the program excellent Expert.net Networking expertise Rolled out worldwide, this program develops our personnel s customer relations skills. It is accompanied by various initiatives often local to motivate employees and measure and encourage their performance. Going for Green is based on the universal code of green, amber and red traffic signals, which are used to symbolize the different day-to-day situations encountered with passengers and the attitude to be adopted. In 2008, almost 5,000 employees were trained. In two years, 15,000 will have completed the training. The aim of Expert.net is to highlight and transmit within the division our company s expertise, which is a genuine source of competitiveness. Twelve expertise networks have been formed to make recommendations on methods and the rollout of innovations that, once approved, will be disseminated companywide as best practices to be implemented.
6 Veolia Transport commitment 5 10 Veolia Transport commitment Take concrete and measurable actions to preserve the environment 6 Seize new growth opportunities Our expertise in the design, organization and management of public transportation enables us to operate in new markets, including Asia, and in sectors undergoing rapid growth. We do everything possible to reduce pollution emissions from our fleet and also propose pertinent environmental solutions. CREATE NEW ACTIVITIES AND ALLIANCES CONVINCE BY EXAMPLE Precise measurement of our environmental footprint, through the deployment of the Veolia Environnement Environmental Management System (EMS) at our sites and the Eco-Efficient Travel indicator. This indicator measures the air pollution and CO2 emissions avoided per passenger and calculates the energy savings due to the use of public transportation rather than private cars. Energy management practices and research that help reduce our own consumption: wastewater recycling, solar energy, training in eco-driving for personnel, use of new fuels, electric and hybrid engines, etc. Awareness actions for the general public, with campaigns to promote the use of public transportation and actions in schools on sustainable mobility issues. Veolia Transport participates actively in the debate on climate change and the need to develop public transportation. Foster long-term relationships based on trust with transit authorities, under public service management contracts, long-term concession contracts or comprehensive public-private partnerships. Develop partnerships in promising markets, in particular by making use of the fit of expertise with RATP, the Paris transit operator, in Asia or with Air for the joint management of transnational highspeed rail lines in Europe. Broaden our activities in passenger transportation, especially through airport management services, including airside mobility services, parking lot management and multiservice management (security, maintenance, passenger services, baggage handling, etc.). 33 % of vehicles washed using recycled wash water 31 transit systems have a rainwater harvesting system Germany The leading private regional rail operator MAIN PRIORITIES FOR 2009 Remain the leader in our principal countries Concrete results backed up by figures Continue to expand in the Asian market In 2008, Veolia Transport reduced pollution emissions from its vehicle fleet : - 17 % for CO - 23 % for hydrocarbons - 15 % for particles The evaluation based on the Eco-Efficient Travel indicator shows: million metric tons of equivalent CO2 emissions avoided million liters of fuel saved (Source : 2008 environmental reporting data, Veolia Transport Sustainable Development Department) In the space of 10 years, NordWestBahn, a joint company owned by Veolia Transport (64% of the share capital) and the municipalities of Osnabrück and Oldenburg, has become Germany s leading private operator of regional rail services, with more than 16 million passengers per year, 840 kilometers of track, a fleet of 70 railcars and 340 employees.
