2 National Children s Dental Health Month at SIU SDM The Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine once again provided free oral health exams throughout the month of February as part of its celebration of National Children s Dental Health Month (NCDHM). The SIU SDM Community and Preventive Dentistry Program invited local elementary school children to the Alton campus throughout the month for free exams and comprehensive, fun and interactive oral health education. The SDM has conducted the program for more than 20 years. In 2015, SIU SDM held a total of six sessions to celebrate NCDHM. (Eight were scheduled, but two were regretfully cancelled due to inclement weather.) The elementary schools that participated included Lovejoy Elementary from Alton, South Roxana Elementary School, and Central Elementary from Roxana. A total of 253 local school children attended the month-long celebration and 216 of those children received free oral health exams. Year 3 and Year 4 dental students were involved in the NCDHM program. The interactive oral health education learning centers focused on oral-systemic connections; appropriate dietary and beverage choices; and oral hygiene. The experiment table uses eggs and chicken bones immersed in soda and teaches about the effects of acids in drinks on teeth and bones, said Poonam Jain, BDS, MS, MPH, director of SIU SDM Community and Preventive Dentistry. The children simply love our spinning wheels that have questions about diet, hygiene and connections of the mouth to the body. At the end of each session, all participating children received an oral health kit and each participating teacher received a set of educational resources. Photos left to right: Josh Heimerdinger, Year 4 dental student, provides an oral health exam during NCDHM; Bryce Evans, Year 3 dental student, explains oral-systemic connections; Blake Ferando, Year 3 dental student, discusses appropriate dietary and beverage choices. SIU School of Dental Medicine Students Conduct Screenings at Special Olympics Year 3 dental students at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) provided dental screenings, patient education and nutritional counseling to athletes participating in the Special Olympics Area 12 Spring Games held May 2, 2015 at SIUE s Korte Stadium. The dental students conducted exams on 85 athletes through the Special Olympics Special Smiles program. SIU SDM has participated in the program for more than a decade. Jacob Coffey, a third year dental student, provides patient education. Aaron Michaels provides a dental screening for a Special Olympics athlete. The dental students did a wonderful job educating the athletes regarding diet, beverage choices and oral hygiene, said Dr. Poonam Jain, Director of Community Dentistry at the SIU SDM. Each screened athlete received appropriate referral, if needed, along with a goodie bag filled with a SpinBrush, toothpaste and other oral hygiene products. Special Smiles is a national program designed to provide dental screenings, patient education and nutritional counseling onsite to athletes competing in one or more Special Olympics events. Special Smiles is part of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program.

3 Dental Students Earn Grant Funding for Dental Care for Homeless Veterans Treatment at SIU SDM for Homeless Vets Begins A team of five dental students, led by Year 4 dental student Travis Cripps, recently earned a grant award from the SIUE Meridian Society to support dental care for area homeless veterans. During a luncheon held on April 9, 2015, hosted by the SIUE Meridian Society, three of the dental students Travis Cripps (Year 4), Patrick Farrow (Year 4) and Mikal Bell (Year 2) accepted the $5,000 grant award on behalf of the School and the Tri-Service Military Dental Club. Dental students Alexandria Hawkins (Year 4) and Vance Knauer (Year 4) were also instrumental in securing the grant. The Tri-Service Military Dental Club is a new organization on the Alton Campus for dental students who have a military background and/or plan to serve following graduation from dental school. The Dental Care for Homeless Veterans grant proposal was a collaborative effort, led by the Tri-Service Military Dental Club at SIU SDM and supported by Gateway 180 and Operation: Reveille a pair of St. Louis-based organizations committed to eradicating homelessness. The effort was also supported by the Student Professional and Ethics Association and the Illinois State Dental Society. Travis Cripps and Patrick Farrow (Year 4 dental students) with Dr. Bruce Rotter (Dean at SIU SDM) and Mikal Bell (Year 2 dental student), accepting the SIUE Meridian Society grant award on April 9, The School of Dental Medicine and the Tri-Service Military Dental Club have a shared goal to provide dental care to veterans in the greater St. Louis area. During this fall semester, the School hopes to provide treatment for additional veterans. The Tri-Service Military Dental Club presently includes 30 chapters throughout the country. The organization has a stated philanthropic goal of providing free dental care for homeless veterans. The SIUE Meridian Society is a group of women who provide leadership through philanthropy. Through the pooled resources of their membership, they help assist SIUE projects that provide direct services in the community. Since 2003, the Meridian Society has distributed more than $225,000 in awards to more than 118 community projects. With the recent grant award from the SIUE Meridian Society, the School and the Tri-Service Military Dental Club have secured $17,000 in donations to support the effort to provide free dental care for homeless veterans in the area. The initiative to provide free dental care for veterans at the School started with a generous gift from John Simmons, a prominent attorney in Alton. During the recent spring semester, the School provided treatment for the first six homeless veterans through the grant program. The homeless veterans who received dental treatment were identified through Operation: Reveille in St. Louis. The goal of Operation: Reveille was to provide these veterans with services that include housing assistance, employment opportunities, health and mental health treatment, transportation, food, and related social services. The ultimate goal was to help make it possible for these veterans to begin to lead stable and productive lives once again. 10 SIU School of Dental Medicine The Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine celebrated its 40th class of graduates at its Commencement Saturday, June 6. Doctor of dental medicine degrees were bestowed upon 46 graduates during the ceremony held in SIUE s Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom. 1 While higher education is promoted in today s economy, an advanced professional degree is over and above the standard of achievement, said SIUE Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe. I congratulate you on the hard work, persistence and dedication that have brought you to this point. SIU SDM Dean Dr. Bruce Rotter praised the class of 2015 for its notable academic achievement. The cohort achieved a 100 percent first time pass rate on the patient-based portion of their regional licensing exam. Twelve students graduated with honors. These graduates have distinguished themselves through their academic achievements, through the high quality and broad scope of dental care they ve delivered to their patients, through their community outreach and service efforts, and through their research accomplishments and professionalism, Dr. Rotter said. 2 Dr. Pamela Zarkowski, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit Mercy, was the Keynote Speaker. She urged the graduates to consider three common dental instruments as they move through their professional lives: the mirror, the explorer and the probe. Zarkowski encouraged the newly hooded dentists to use the mirror to reflect and retract, the explorer to look further into the changes within health care and the probe to ask questions. There s going to be technology and science in your future, Dr. Zarkowski remarked. It s going to be used to access and diagnose patients. But I really think these three basic tools that don t have bells and whistles, that aren t connected to a computer, that aren t in some cloud somewhere, will be very helpful to you. Seven SDM alumni participated in the hooding ceremony. The School allows an alumnus who is an immediate family member of a graduate to hood their family member as they walk across the stage.

12 Student Lab in the Main Clinic Building Renovated School of Dental Medicine Plans to Reopen the Edwardsville Dental Clinic Over the summer of 2015, the School of Dental Medicine worked to remodel the Student Lab in the Main Clinic building on the Alton Campus. Dr. Bruce Rotter, Dean of the School of Dental Medicine, cited the need for the renovation. The Student Lab was one of the most outdated areas in the Main Clinic building, said Dr. Rotter. Air and water lines, as well as mechanicals, were at the end of their functional lifespan. The age of the lab was perhaps most apparent among those students who transitioned from the state-of-the-art lab facilities in the new Simulation Laboratory building to the more antiquated facilities in the Main Clinic building. The Student Lab renovation will replace existing dental casework including provisions for ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance, installing new electrical, natural gas and compressed air for each lab station, and replacing flooring, ceiling pads and general lighting. As the remodeling process occurred in the Main Clinic building on the Alton Campus, our clinical students shared the lab space in the Simulation Lab with our preclinical students, said Dr. Rotter. The new Student Lab in the Main Clinic building now compares favorably with the lab facilities in the Simulation Lab building. The new Student Lab in the Main Clinic building was ready for clinical students to resume work at the start of the fall semester of the current Academic Year. d D The School of Dental Medicine is planning to reopen the Edwardsville Dental Clinic on the Edwardsville Campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). For nearly a decade from , the School of Dental Medicine leased the Edwardsville Dental Clinic, and it served as the School of Dental Medicine s Implant Clinic, which quickly gave rise to a truly outstanding Implant Program at the School. For a host of reasons, including the opening of the Advanced Care Wing of the Main Clinic in Alton as well as budgetary considerations at the time, the SIU SDM Implant Program moved to Alton in 2006 and dental treatment at the Edwardsville Dental Clinic was discontinued. After being owned and operated privately for nearly a decade since the School s departure and being repurposed for non-dental functions, the facility was recently donated to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The School of Dental Medicine immediately began investigating the opportunity to reopen the Edwardsville Dental Clinic. This fall, renovations are being planned and scheduled, and upon completion of the University bidding process, the renovation project could begin as early as spring The School of Dental Medicine hopes to reopen the Edwardsville Dental Clinic in December Upon returning to the Edwardsville Dental Clinic, the School will use the newly-renovated facility in part to accommodate the new International Advanced Placement Program. The clinic s lab space will accommodate the international students for their 12-week, intensive Clinical Certification Course, which is required prior to their matriculation as a Year 3 dental student. The Edwardsville Dental Clinic will also accommodate various clinical rotations, primarily for graduate students. The newlyrenovated space might also provide opportunities for the School to expand existing postdoctoral training programs and to consider new programs.

16 S I U S D M M I D W I N T E R A L U M N I R E C E P T I O N SIU SDM Celebrates 40th at Midwinter Alumni Reception On February 27, 2015, the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine continued celebrating 40 years of graduating outstanding dentists at our annual Midwinter Alumni Reception in Chicago. Nearly 150 guests, including over 90 SIU SDM alumni, attended the event at the InterContinental Chicago Hotel. The event marked one of the largest gatherings of SIU SDM alumni under one roof. Including the Class of 2015, representing the 40th class of graduates from the SIU SDM, the event was attended by class members from 26 different graduating classes. The SIU SDM Classes of 2000, 2011, 2013, and 2015 were all well represented this year. Nonetheless, the Class of 2014 was the best represented class at the event with 13 class members in attendance. The School of Dental Medicine s Midwinter Alumni Reception is held each year on the Friday evening of the Chicago Dental Society s Midwinter Meeting. The event is co-sponsored each year by the SIUE Alumni Association. We are already making plans for the 2016 SIU SDM Midwinter Alumni Reception. We will return to the Hotel InterContinental Chicago on Friday, February 26, We hope to see you there! Bob Schorsch, Tim Theobald and Jordan Simonovich read the green, as Zach Middleton shows his team the line. Celebrating 20 Years Jeromy Dixson, Theron Waisath, Tyler Shoemaker and Nathan McGuire had fun at the annual SIU SDM golf tourney. On May 1, 2015, the Annual Mac McKenzie Prophy Cup Challenge celebrated 20 years of fun on the golf course in support of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. The event enjoyed an absolutely perfect day, as well as great attendance. Sadly, the 20th Annual Mac McKenzie Prophy Cup Challenge represented the first year that the namesake of the event, Mac McKenzie, was no longer with us. Mac passed away in July Nonetheless, Mac was there in the hearts of all who knew him. He was remembered by many who participated in the tournament this year. Proceeds from the golf tournament will again support faculty recruitment and retention at the SIU School of Dental Medicine. This support genuinely offers the School the best opportunity to continue to find innovative ways to attract and retain faculty with the latest knowledge, skills, and passion to motivate and engage our students. Dental Arts Laboratories (DAL) sponsored the championship team this year. In fact, the team was led by Bruce Colgin, CEO of DAL. He was joined by Ty Milner and Micah Roberts, both graduates of the SIU SDM Class of The DAL Team played an excellent round of golf to earn the coveted Prophy Cup title, topping the leaderboard with an outstanding 16 under par. Chris Sehy (Class of 1982) led a team including dental students Robert Huey (Year 3), Zach Rodeffer (Year 3), and Brett Haarmann (Year 2) to make a competitive run for the championship title. Sehy s team also finished the day at 16 under par, but they were undone by the playoff hole and finished in second place in the championship flight. In other contests held during the tournament, Vanessa Keller (Class of 2002) earned the trophy among the women in the Closest-to-the-Pin contest. Gina Orland (Class of 2007) won the Longest Drive contest among the women. Drew Bradley (son of Rebecca Bradley-Class of 1989) earned the trophy among the men in the Closest-to-the-Pin contest. Bill Seaton (faculty at SIU SDM) won the Longest Drive contest among the men. Thank you to all those who played in the 20th Annual Mac McKenzie Prophy Cup Challenge. We appreciate your support of the SIU School of Dental Medicine, our faculty, and our students. A Special Thank You to the Gold Sponsors of the 2015 Prophy Cup Challenge Golf Tournament! 18 Chili Cookoff On January 27, 2015, the S.M.I.L.E. Committee sponsored the 6th Annual SIU SDM Chili Cook-off. Each year, a surprisingly large number of the faculty, staff and students of the School bring samples of their culinary skills to enter the competition. Then at lunch, nearly all the faculty, staff and students commence judging, or sampling, the wide array of chili and soup offerings. Following four, good-sized cups of chili and or soup, the truly dedicated will go above and beyond and endure judging the desserts from a seemingly endless selection of delectable deliciousness. (Fortunately, the School enjoys an abundance of dedication among our faculty, staff and students.) As stomachs are expeditiously filled, the lunchtime event always provides a great opportunity for faculty, staff and students to enjoy a nice meal and a few laughs together. The S.M.I.L.E. (SDM Motivation, Inspiration, Laughter and Enthusiasm) Committee is charged with the task of generating more smiles among faculty, staff and students. We are grateful for the work of all of the S.M.I.L.E. Committee members. Photos: Right - (top) Drs. Christa Hopp and Steve Hoffman, SIU SDM faculty, have made their selections and appear eager to begin sampling; (bottom) Jillian Bruch, Heather Mahassek and Ashley McNealy, Year 4 dental students, partake in their final Chili Cook-off as students; Bottom (left) Aaron Michaels, Year 3 dental student, joins Alexandria Hawkins, Kent Tuneberg, and Andrew Hartman--Year 4 dental students for a hearty (but likely not heart-heathy) lunchtime meal; (right) Lisa Sheldt, a SIU SDM Dental Hygienist, spooning a small cupful of deliciousness into bowls of plenty, with Bev Miller, a SIU SDM Dental Assistant II. SIU SDM Students Take Oath for USAF Drs. Travis Cripps and Vance Knauer took their oath of office for the United States Air Force Dental Corps on June 22, Dr. Bruce Rotter, Dean of SIU SDM, witnessed the oath. Dr. Cripps is now at Travis Air Force Base, situated in the San Francisco Bay Area near Fairfield, CA. Dr. Knauer is now at Scott Air Force Base, situated in the St. Louis Metro Area near Belleville, IL.

19 Students of the SIU School of Dental Medicine were joined by students of the SIUE Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy at an interdisciplinary education simulation event held at the SIUE Edwardsville Campus on February 26, The event educated more than 200 students on the topic of medical error disclosure. The unique interdisciplinary education effort was supported by a $7,425 Excellence in Undergraduate Education (EUE) grant through the University. The Dental Students Participate in an Interdisciplinary Education Simulation Event EUE program funds projects that contribute to excellence and innovation in undergraduate education. Kimberly Baptist, a year 4 dental student (in black scrubs), participates in a discussion with students from the SIUE Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy. Students from the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance acted as family members of a patient who suffered a medical error. Teams of students from each professional school were tasked with informing the patient s family of the situation and dealing with any distraught behavior. Each health care team needed to achieve the goals of providing truthful information; continued support for the patient; concern and support for the family member; and re-connection of trust with the care givers, explained Terri Poirier, Professor at the SIUE School of Pharmacy. This project fosters collaborations and teamwork among our different health professional programs, said Toni Roucka, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the School of Dental Medicine. The collaborative effort was the first of its kind at the University. Students responses and reactions were recorded. All students involved completed post-tests and wrote reflections on the experience. High School Students Explore SIU School of Dental Medicine During SIUE Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp A host of area high school students spent the day on June 24, 2015 at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine as part of a weeklong SIUE Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp. Some of the day s topics and activities included an anatomy and physiology experience; a laboratory exercise; and a SIU SDM campus tour. The weeklong SIUE summer camp also included visits to the SIUE Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy.
