2 Communication Plan I. OUR AIM: School s AIM is to develop a communication program that all staff and community members embrace. This plan will provide public understanding and awareness of the learning opportunities provided for students here at School. In accordance with our School Improvement Plan, the communication plan will also help to establish a positive school climate that promotes cooperation, family and community involvement, as well as professional learning that is open to new ideas, within a safe, disciplined, rigorous environment that fosters development of good character and citizenship. II. COMMUNICATION BELIEFS: We believe it takes the entire community to educate children and prepare them to be college and career ready. We believe effective communication allows parents and community members to be connected to our school. We believe School s staff delivers effective educational, researched-based programs designed to meet the needs of ALL students. We believe the mission of School is to partner together with all stakeholders to provide a safe and nurturing environment that recognizes and promotes academic and social growth and excellence, while preparing each student for their next level of learning. We believe in developing school excellence that is linked to the community and is constantly evolving and improving. We believe that good communication is critical to our success. III. DESIRED OUTCOMES: To develop improved internal and external communications; To provide an effective two-way communication plan that will inform all shareholders (parents/guardians, students, alumni, community members) of the issues/activities facing education at School. 2
3 To develop school and community understanding of our commitment to the educational process, that will put into practice the mission, goals and beliefs of our school. To design and maintain a positive school climate that welcomes and encourages family and community involvement in our school. To seek partnerships within the community to provide additional learning experiences for students. To create a learning community that is open to new ideas. To develop a system of communication that creates an environment that promotes cooperation, teamwork, and creativity among all stakeholders. IV. TARGETED SHAREHOLDERS: A. SCHOOL STAFF Administration, Faculty and Staff all staff both certified and classified: The staff is aware that they are the district s most important communicators and that they must seek effective and positive ways to communicate information to students, parents and the community about core content, events, problems, policies and opportunities. School s mission, goals and beliefs are available and understood. Each staff member will feel a sense of satisfaction and pride and will celebrate student accomplishments and successes. B. PARENTS/GUARDIANS Current and future parents, guardians, and grandparents: Better two-way communication between families and the teachers and school will enhance student learning and success. Families will become aware that students are engaged in an academically challenging and caring school environment through recognition and celebrating student successes that promote learning where students are safe physically, mentally and emotionally. On-going, two-way communication between families and the school supports the concept that the quality of education at School is a quality, ongoing process. 3
4 C. GENERAL PUBLIC To become aware that: Involvement is crucial to the education of children. The workplace is changing and our school, with the help of the community, will better prepare our students to be college and career ready. D. STUDENTS They must understand that: Education is a priority for becoming a productive citizen. Everyone can learn at a higher level given the right curriculum, resources, support and time. Students must take responsible and be accountable for their own learning by setting goals and evaluating their progress. They CAN SUCCEED. V. EXPECTATIONS FOR PARENT-STUDENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION Students should view themselves as the primary link for communication between parents and teachers. Parents should use the class newsletter, the school website, the Floyd County School s website as well as IC s parent portal to access routine information such as important dates, progress reports and details pertaining to upcoming school events. Teachers should share routine, reasonable things that they will do to communicate with students and parents such as providing course expectations, syllabi, rubrics and grading policies. If you need additional information, always contact the person who can directly respond to your question. For example, if you need clarification about specific assignments communicate through the agenda and/or contact the classroom teacher. If you have questions about the middle school advanced program, contact an assistant principal. Efforts will be made to return phone calls and s. Because teachers do not sit at a desk with ready phone access, parents need to provide a number where they can be reached at specific times of availability when they call to leave a message. If a student needs to be sent out of the class, the teacher will contact the school administration and parent. The student will communicate with the school administration and parent, and the student will also share a corrective plan of action with the teacher. 4
5 If a student is upset by a teacher, the student should be encouraged to share his or her concerns individually with the teacher in a calm, respectful way as soon as possible after the event. If the student needs assistance in planning how to address concerns, he or she should seek advice from an administrate to prepare for the communication that needs to take place with the teacher. Students should prepare to address their concerns without disrupting class or becoming frustrated. If a student is not meeting expectations, phone calls will be made half-way through each six weeks giving an updated status of their performance and if required, offer opportunities for remediation. While phone communication can be informative and important, the agenda or is the best option for staying up-to-date on student grades and missing assignments. 5
