Please refer to the below listed curriculumn blocks for further definition and articulation: Catalogue description to be printed in the Fall/Winter/Spring catalogues: The purpose of this course will be to increase student knowledge of medical culture, terminology, and documentation. This course will utilize both Spanish and English. The students will use area specific medical terminology to competently document specific and generic nursing activities. The students will be practicing newly acquired skills in an English-speaking environment. Block I: Life Skills Professional Skills Block II: Documentation Block III: Medical Terminology To establish the professional skills necessary for English proficiency in the medical field. To practice both professional care giving skills, English and medical terminology in a variety of contexts. Including a class room setting; utilizing nursing assistant skills, knowledge, and terminology. To format and practice the standard methods of nursing documentation in English. To learn area specific abbreviations and written practices in English. To acquire a base knowledge of medical terminology, inclusive of the following areas: introduction to medical language rules of combining forms of medical terms presentation of medical terms with proper written and verbal expression translation of medical terms basic anatomy of the human body basic pathologies associated with human body systems Relation to Core Abilities: Communication: Students will read aloud in class, make oral presentations and participate in group
2 discussions, In order to proffer clear and appropriate communication in a nursing setting/work place. Students will acquire new area-specific terminology via assigned vocabulary /exercises. Students will be participating in interactive lab practice, utilizing area-specific skills in team settings that require comprehensive communication. Students will be speaking in English, as well as in their native languages. Students will be acquiring a more proficient use of English; by reading, writing and speaking it daily, within the class room setting. Critical Thinking Personal Responsibility Students will evaluate nursing charting, execute nursing documentation, problem solve patient/care giver interactions. The student will complete exercises involving goal setting and measuring outcomes. Students will practice skills in re-created labs that allow them to make deductions, utilize'sequential thinking, and make objective observations. The student will practice working in teams, thus encouraging problem-solving in group situations, as a collaborative effort. Students will role-play in a variety of different nursing venues. Students will demonstrate initiative in classroom activities, group exercises, discussions, practice labs and homework. Students will apply newly acquired vocabulary, medical terminology and skills to their projects and written exercises. Students will benefit from how personal responsibility increases their collaborative efforts with other classmates in team work interactions. A student's personal responsibility will assist in increasing both their nursing skills
3 Diversity/Appreciation of Others Information and Technology and their English abilities. An objective of this course is to increase awareness of human interdependence and our responsibility towards each other as human beings. A key component to this course is to increase English usage skills in both verbal use, reading and written language. The technological factor is the acquisition of area-specific terminology and practices for NA's in the medical field. Relevant technologies, terminology and skills are used in this course: Internet search skills, computer documentation, and some technical demonstration of medical tools. Lifelong Learning An objective of this course is to teach the students the tools to be competent in English, in any field of healthcare Students will learn to utilize new terminology and skills in their chosen field of healthcare to be utilized in life long careers. Students will acquire an understanding for the process of problem solving in various occupational situations. Prerequisites: For placement in this class, the student must score a level V on the CASAS 20 ESL test and be enrolled in the Mathematics portion of the Spanish GED. 4 Class Format: Classes will be held daily for 50 minutes each session, Monday through Friday, The GED Math class will be offered daily The class format will include lecture English/Spanish team exercises/projects, practice labs, practice documentation in English, reading/writing exercises, and skills activities. Students will be tested periodically during the class and a final exam will be given.

5 The final exam will consist of three sections: an oral/written exam in English, on medical terminology, documentation and life skills, the second section will test applied nursing assistant practicum skills/abilities (in Spanish and English),and the third section will be achieving completion of a CASAS pre-test and post test. Attendance/Homework Policy: 95% attendance is required. All absences should be reported to the Instructor via a phone message on the office voice mail. Active participation, and completing 100 % of the in-class assignments and the homework are required.
