2 In 2008, AFW founded the SHE Counts! Coalition. Includes every major nonprofit serving women in Arizona. Hosted the first annual SHE Counts Women s Day at the Legislature in 2009; 2010 event featured Fair Pay Hero Lilly Ledbetter. SHE stands for Safety, Health, and Economic empowerment. See the rally and SHE Counts profiled at The SHE Counts tag has resonated with the public. Media and Public officials interested in the concept. Has served as a lasting umbrella for women s advocacy and coalition-building.

3 SHE Counts is now a recognized brand and an excellent organizing principle for research, advocacy, and grantmaking. The model uses grantmaking, convening, research and advocacy together, to advance the lives of individual women, and the status of women as a whole.

10 The SHE Counts! initiative targets women based on AFW research: Single mothers who are raising children alone Annual income between $15-$35,000 (FPL for a family of three is $18,310) May have care-giving responsibilities for other relatives May have history of abuse May have been a victim of sex trafficking May have emotional health or substance abuse treatment needs Level of education, financial literacy, or life skills are a barrier to selfsufficiency At risk for inter-generational poverty

11 ORGANIZING AND BRANDING OUR EFFORT: 1.Targeted Investments Based on Research 2.Raising Public and Policymaker Awareness of the Need 3.Convening Service Providers and the Community to focus on end results REPEATING OUR MANTRA A woman must be safe and healthy before she can become economically independent. And our work is not done until she is independent.

14 SAFETY AND STABILITY Goal: Strengthening the social safety net that helps women and their families meet their basic needs of safety and security. OUTCOME EXAMPLES: % Increase in shelter capacity. %increase in the number of employers who provide information and training regarding DV. %Increase number of law enforcement officers receiving post-academy DV training

15 HEALTH AND RECOVERY Goal: Providing a bridge from safety to independence; addressing the unique physical and mental health needs of family violence survivors. OUTCOME EXAMPLES: % Increase in pre-natal care % Increase in survivors of trauma receiving mental health counseling %Increase in those successfully completing drug rehabilitation Number receiving reconstructive surgery which enables employment % increase in health insurance coverage, private and/or public.

16 ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE Goal: Facilitating a permanent, sustainable move to the middle class for struggling women and their families. OUTCOME EXAMPLES: % Increase in financial literacy % Increase in living-wage employment % Increase in those completing education and training leading to career-level employment % Increase in home ownership
