Using WANTED s Supply/Demand Ratios we have developed a ranking of the best and worst places for Electrical Engineers to look for work. 6 Calculating the Rank At an extremely basic level, filling (or, finding) a job is a function of supply number of candidates available - and demand number of open positions. If there aren t any jobs available candidates won t find jobs and, vice versa, if there aren t any candidates available, jobs will go unfilled. By putting supply and demand together you get a true understanding of how challenging a position will be to fill or find. The most difficult positions for recruiters to fill are those that have limited supply of candidates and excessive demand by employers. This combination of low supply and high demand guarantees that the position will be hard-to-fill from a recruiter s standpoint and easy-to-find from a candidate s perspective. Measuring Supply As mentioned, you can think of supply as the number of candidates that might be available to fill an employer s open position. WANTED measures candidate supply by estimating the number and type of employees that are currently employed by all employers. These supply numbers combine data from employer surveys and historical online job ads. By combining these two categories of data, we can build an accurate picture of just how many people there are in a location based upon their occupation and job title. What Supply Can Mean to You As a recruiter, your job will be easier or more difficult depending upon the level of supply for the type of position you are trying to fill. The greater the supply for a certain type of candidate, the easier it will be to find the best candidate. As a job seeker, your ability to find a job will be easier or more difficult depending upon the level of supply of candidates. The larger the supply, the more challenging it will be for you to find a position as you are competing against more people for the same jobs

7 Measuring Demand Demand starts with employers the buyers who are looking for employees. How much demand is there? For the past five years, WANTED has been collecting and saving every online job advertisement that has appeared on job boards. These ads represent demand for employees by employers who have paid to post these positions. By tracking every online ad that has been posted, WANTED can measure the level of demand for any occupation, by any company in any location in the United States and Canada, at any time. Each month, WANTED summarizes all job ads for each occupation that appear on online job boards and compares that to the number of employees in each occupation and city, as estimated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The difference between the demand and supply in each occupation and city is compared to the national average for that occupation.
