2 #59 KNEE AND SHOULDER REHABILITATION: MANUAL THERAPY AND THERAPEUTIC EXCERCISE Knee and shoulder disorders constitute a large population treated by the orthopaedic physical therapist. This one-day course is designed to provide the participant with complimentary assessment and intervention skills of manual and exercise physical therapy. Laboratory sessions will focus on manual therapy followed by therapeutic and home program exercises. Participants will have opportunity to practice reviewed and newly acquired skills under the guidance of a highly experienced instructor. A combination of discussion and hands-on lab experiences with physical therapists in the examination and intervention of the knee and shoulder disorders will be the focus of the day Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Recall the relative anatomy of the shoulder and of the knee in relationship with the Upper and Lower Quarters 2. Demonstrate the proper selection and use of selected evaluation procedures of the shoulder and knee and the relationship with the Upper and Lower Quarters 3. Demonstrate the proper implementation of selected treatment procedures for pathologies of shoulder and the knee and their relationship to the Upper and Lower Quarter pathology 4. Demonstrate the exercises appropriate for rehabilitation of the shoulder and the knee and the relationship with normal Upper and Lower Quarter function. Instructor: Michael Miller, PT, MPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, CCI is currently a physical therapist and Clinical Residency Faculty for the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency at Rancho Physical Therapy in Murrieta, California as well as Clinical Specialist II and part of the Clinical Residency faculty for Kaiser Permanente in Orange, CA. He received his B.S. in Physical Therapy from California State University, Long Beach and his Masters of Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University. Michael is a part-time instructor at Loma Linda University contributing to the orthopaedic curriculum. 3 #60 INTRODUCTION TO PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS: A CLINICAL OVERVIEW OF PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF INCONTINENCE. A large percent of the population face each day with the embarrassment and handicap of incontinence even though a significant portion of these incidences can be alleviated with physical therapy. This one day seminar is designed to provide a summarized introduction to pelvic physical therapy evaluation and treatment interventions of male and female incontinence conditions. It is geared toward the generalist physical therapist who wants to expand their awareness of specialty practice options or has an interest in further expanding their education into the men s and women s health specialty. Presentation of evidence-based evaluation and treatment techniques will be emphasized. Outcome measures and multi-disciplinary management will be addressed. We will primarily discuss urinary incontinence but will also describe fecal incontinence conditions. The therapist will be exposed to key signs and symptoms that relate to disease and impairment types, proper use of evaluative tools, and suggested protocols for treatment interventions that include therapeutic exercise, semg biofeedback, external manual therapy, patient related education/behavioral instructions and electrotherapy modalities. The cadaver lab for the pelvic floor will provide the participant with a facilitated appreciation of the anatomy being addressed. Course objectives: Upon completion of this seminar participants will be able to: 1. Describe the role of pelvic floor physical therapy in treating patients with incontinence 2. Identify incontinence diagnoses and the impairments associated with/responsive to physical therapy 3. Recognize anatomy and pathophysiology of the male and female urologic and muscular systems with reference to incontinence diagnoses 4. Describe the importance of specific subjective items and functional report from patients with incontinence conditions 5. Describe components of physical exam and evaluative tools available for assessment of incontinence patients 6. Determine what treatment strategies work best for different types of incontinence 7. Develop progression of treatment for pelvic rehabilitation 8. Summarize current literature regarding outcomes of pelvic physical therapy for incontinence Instructor: Karen Brandon, DSc PT WCS, BCIA-PMDB. After completing her Masters in Physical Therapy, she pursued her Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy at Loma Linda University, in Loma Linda, CA and graduated in Her dissertation highlighted her interest in Women s Health and has been the emphasis of multiple lectures. She holds a certification with Biofeedback Certification International Alliance for biofeedback treatment related to pelvic muscle dysfunction and is a Board Certified Women s Health Specialist with the American Physical Therapy Association. In addition to private practice, she is an instructor at local universities for physical therapy, and an advisor for prephysical therapy courses, research and continuing education seminars. Dr. Brandon is interested in a well-rounded approach to rehabilitation and works closely with referral sources and other professionals to ensure that her patients get quality attention with all aspects of their care. With experience in many areas of physical therapy, she has treated multiple patient types and says, I find the greatest reward in helping my patients get their lives back, whether it means full recovery, finding the best ways to cope with temporary discomforts, or learning ways to adapt to their disabilities. My patients teach me the power of resilience. Regarding her passion for teaching she says, It is the highest honor to be considered a professor. 4 #61 VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION This introductory evidence-based course will expose participants to vestibular rehabilitation using a combination of lecture, lab, case scenarios, videos and discussion. It covers relevant anatomy, subjective and physical examinations, and interventions. Course Objectives: Course participants will have the opportunity to: 1. Develop a basic understanding of the relevant vestibular system anatomy and physiology. 2. Develop the clinical skill-set necessary to examine dizzy patients and determine whether or not the patient is appropriate for physical or occupational therapy management. 3. Develop the clinical skill-set necessary to implement an effective treatment plan based on subjective and physical examinations. Instructors: Eric G. Johnson, DSc, PT, NCS is a Professor at Loma Linda University where he teaches vestibular and adult neurological rehabilitation courses in the Department of Physical Therapy. 5 #62 LEGAL AND ETHICAL PRACTICE OF PHYSICAL THERAPISTS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA All physical therapists who practice in the State of California need to have a current understanding of the Laws and Regulations that govern the practice of physical therapy. This course will assist the participant to understand and differentiate between the physical therapy practice act and the physical therapy regulations. In addition, this course will cover the APTA Code of Ethics, continuing competency requirements, practice issues (e.g. direct access and diagnosis, PTAs serving in leadership roles, physical therapists providing wellness, etc.), Supervision of supportive personal and employment of physical therapists by professional corporations. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the participant will have a knowledge base to: 1. Describe where information about the California Physical Therapy practice Laws and Regulations can be found. 2. Describe the difference between the Physical Therapy Practice Act and the Physical Therapy Regulations including what body votes them in to existence. 3. Understand the implications of the Acts and Regulations on lawful clinical practice 4. Understand the APTA Code of Ethics 5. 6 #63 ESSENTIALS OF MEDICARE DOCUMENTATION AND CODING FOR THERAPY IN SKILLED NURSING AND SUB-ACUTE FACILITES This course is designed to address rehabilitation services within the skilled nursing setting, including sub-acute services. Discussions will cover documentation requirements for Medicare part A and part B patients as well as new MDS 3.0 changes as they relate to therapy services. Additional subject matter will include supervision of therapy staff and general principles of an audit process. Course Objectives: The Course would provide the participant with the tools needed to: 1. Correctly Identify CPT, ICD-9 and CCI coding in documenting assessment and treatment of the Medicare A, Medicare Part B patient in the SNF/Subacute setting 2. Identify the appropriate RUG level and integrate therapy services under the new MDS 3.0 that maximizes patient care and facility resources 3. Correctly assign patients to treatment mechanisms reflective of Medicare A guidelines including Concurrent and Group treatments 4. Provide appropriate level of supervision to students, physical therapy assistants and aides within the clinical setting 5. Discuss general principles of the process of an audit Course Instructors: Cynthia Sienes Galvez, RN, BSN, REHS, Certified Minimum Data Set (MDS) coder and member of the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators (AANAC) has 35 years of professional experience in various healthcare settings including acute hospital and long term care. Additional professional practice has been in Staff Development, and as Director of Nursing. She currently serves as an independent quality assurance (QA) nurse for several skilled nursing facilities in the Southern California area. Cynthia holds a Bachelor degree in Nursing, and graduated as Doctor of Medicine, Board certified in the field of Anesthesiology in the Philippines. Prior to being an independent QA nurse, she joined the Department of Health in the Los Angeles County as a Health Facility Evaluator and a Registered Environmental Health specialist for long-term care. Ron Wall, M.A., has over 30 years experience in health care management, rehabilitation, program development, and regulatory compliance. He is a partner in Axiom Healthcare Group, a consulting organization serving close to 300 health care clients on fiscal, clinical, operational and compliance issues. Previously, he was a partner in a contracting firm which provided staffing and rehabilitation management services for acute hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient clinics. Ron received his B.S.in Psychology from Lewis and Clark College and his M.A in from California State University, Los Angeles.
