About SmartDeploy Enterprise Introduction Most organizations understand the benefits of image-based deployment technology, but the problems and current product offerings associated with maintaining those images can be complex. Companies acquire computers over the years from many manufacturers, internal groups have different hardware and software needs, and remote offices and employees are often expensive to manage. Existing imaging products also present challenges: They require more infrastructure investments, such as dedicated image management computers or image-serving computers, or they require an image for each unique hardware combination. SmartDeploy Enterprise creates an image of a virtual machine this image contains the operating system and applications that you want to deploy. When you deploy this image to a target computer, SmartDeploy Enterprise makes it easy to merge the image with a hardware-specific Platform Pack that contains the necessary device drivers. By separating hardware and device drivers from the operating system and software, SmartDeploy gives you fewer images that require less maintenance than would be possible by using traditional methods. You can run image management tasks on any non-dedicated computer without a dedicated infrastructure. Lastly, SmartDeploy Enterprise does not require a network to manage or deploy images; you can update remote users or offices without a network connection. Double-click SDESetup.exe and follow the installer prompts. d. Create a new folder C:\SmartDeploy. e. Once installed, click Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise to access the SmartDeploy Enterprise components. Install a Virtualization Application You can use any of the virtualization applications listed in the Release Notes. Use the License Wizard Use the SmartDeploy Enterprise software for up to 15 days. Use the License Wizard to activate an installed copy after purchase, or to extend the trial period. For details about the License Wizard and activation process, refer to the License Wizard section, page 44. SmartDeploy Enterprise Quick Start Guide Download here. 5
Using SmartDeploy Enterprise Build Wizard Use the Build Wizard to create a reference VM and master installation. 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Build Wizard. 6
2. Follow the prompts to select: a virtualization product (for example, VMware Player 4), a guest operating system to install, and a source disc or ISO for the Windows installation. 7
3. Name the new virtual machine (VM) and save it to C:\Smartdeploy. 4. The wizard will finish by launching the new virtual machine. 5. Install Windows OS on the new virtual machine. 6. Install any additional line-of-business applications, such as word-processing, , or database applications. Note: This virtual machine contains the master installation that will be captured and deployed (duplicated) to each future installation on a target device. You can run the Build Wizard multiple times to create multiple reference VMs with master installations for deployment to different target devices. 8
Best practices when creating master installations for the Build Wizard Each virtual machine that you create by using the Build Wizard will contain the master installation for a particular set of deployments to target devices. Therefore, it is important that the master installation be as clean as possible. Consider the following best practices when configuring the virtual machines that you create with the Build Wizard: Complete the entire OS and application installation process and make sure that no serious errors occur. When running Windows Update on the master installation, make sure that the entire process has completed. Reboot the machine if necessary and let all updates complete before shutting down. While configuring your master virtual machine, do not install any tools or additions. All additions (device drivers, etc.) should be deployed to your target computers via a Platform Pack. See below, page 20, for more information about Platform Packs. If you are joining the installation to the domain, revert back to a workgroup before capturing the image. Do not run Sysprep before capturing your virtual reference machine. As part of deployment, SmartDeploy will run Sysprep, with an answer file created by the Deployment Wizard, to generalize every computer that the image is deployed to. 9
Capture Wizard Once you have built and configured your master installation, you can use Capture Wizard to capture an image of that installation for later deployment to target devices. Because your reference machine is a virtual machine, you can capture an image of your master installation with the virtual machine running or not running. With the VM running (for how to capture an image with the VM not running, go to p. 12) 1. Mount the SmartDeploy Preinstillation Environment (SmartPE) on the virtual machine. If your virtual machine is running on the same computer as SmartDeploy Enterprise, edit your virtual machine settings so that the CD/DVD drive mounts the file, SmartDeploy.iso. Note: On x86 versions of Windows, you can find SmartDeploy.iso at C:\Program Files\SmartDeploy\SmartDeploy Enterprise. On x64 versions of Windows, you can find SmartDeploy.iso at C:\ Program Files (x86)\smartdeploy\smartdeploy Enterprise. 10
2. Start the virtual machine. If prompted, start SmartPE from the CD/DVD drive. 3. Click Capture an image. 4. On the Welcome to the Capture Wizard page, click Next. 11
With the VM not running, do the following. 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy> SmartDeploy Enterprise > Capture Wizard. 2. On the Welcome to the Capture Wizard page, click Next. 12
3. On the Virtual Hard Disk page, click Browse, and go to the shared folder containing your virtual hard disk. 4. Select the virtual hard disk, click Open, and then click Next. 13
5. On the Select Virtual Disk Volumes page, make sure the Local Disk (C:) volume is selected. For more information about the displayed volumes, click Details. Then click Next. For more information about the Windows Deployment Services (WDS) checkbox option, see below, page
6. On the Operating System page, type the product key. If you do not enter a product key, you will be prompted for one when you use the Deploy Wizard. 7. In the Password box, type the local administrator account password. In the Confirm box, type the password again. Then click Next. 15
8. On the Image Type page, select Standard image or Differencing Image, and then click Next. A standard image contains all the files needed for the target computer, while a differencing image contains only the files that have been changed between a standard image and an updated virtual machine. If you create a differencing image, you will need to browse to the location of the previous version of the image. 16
9. On the Save Image page, browse to where you want to save your image file. You can save the file locally, or map a network drive to save it remotely. In the Image name box, type a name for the image that will make it easy to recognize when you deploy or update the image. In the Image description (optional) box, you can type a more detailed description of the image. This information might help you or others identify any special or unique characteristics of the image, when deciding whether or not to deploy or update it. Click Next. Note: You can save more than one image in a single.wim file. If you save more than one image in a.wim file, all the duplicate files are single instance stored. Therefore, a single.wim that contains two images will likely require less disk space than the same two images saved as two.wim files. 10. On the Completing the Capture Wizard page, click Finish. The wizard may take several minutes to capture the image. 11. When the process is complete, a Capture Wizard dialog box will appear. Click OK. 17
The Windows Deployment Services (WDS) checkbox Windows Deployment Services is the Microsoft technology for network-based installation of Windows operating systems over a local area network (LAN). SmartDeploy Enterprise supports using WDS as a Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), and supports multicast deployment. For more information about integrating WDS with SmartDeploy, please download the Windows Deployment Services guide. The WDS checkbox is used to prepare a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 reference machine for multicast deployment. You can use the WDS checkbox when selecting virtual disk volumes. By default, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are installed with a two-partition setup. However, WDS only accepts single-partition images. If you select the WDS checkbox, the image will be created without the System Reserved partition (which normally contains boot files). The single-partition image can then be imported to WDS. The System Reserved partition is recreated during deployment. 18
Platform Manager Platform Packs A Platform Pack is a compressed, single instance stored file that contains hardware support for specific computers such as device drivers and other platform-specific software. Platform Packs are merged with images created from a virtual environment to create a hardware-specific deployable image. By separating the hardware layer from the operating system and applications, SmartDeploy Enterprise makes it easier to maintain consistent desktop images for an entire organization, without tying specific images to specific hardware. You can use the Platform Manager to import, create, and maintain Platform Packs. You can download pre-configured Platform Packs for standard business-class devices. These packs save you time by including the most current device drivers and support software for systems from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other major hardware manufacturers. They also contain the necessary selection filters and device driver settings so you do not have to recreate them for your organization. The easiest way to create and maintain Platform Packs is: 1. Download the Platform Packs for your target computers and then combine them into one Platform Pack. 2. If you require a Platform Pack that is not available on the SmartDeploy website use the online request form or contact [email protected]. A valid support contract is required for creation of Tier 1 Platform Packs. 3. If you are an advanced user with unique hardware support requirements, you can modify an existing Platform Pack or create a new Platform Pack. 19
Download and Open a Platform Pack Platform Packs for popular hardware systems are available from the SmartDeploy Enterprise website, including Platform Packs for virtual environments. This lets you deploy images into virtual and physical environments that are different from the one used to build and capture the images. Step 1: Download a Platform Pack 1. Open a web browser and go to 2. Click Sign in. If you have not yet created an account on the website, click create new account and provide the necessary information. 3. Once you have signed in, click Download > Platform Packs. 20
4. In the Platform Pack section, select a manufacturer, model, and OS, and then click Download. 5. Accept the Terms & Conditions 6. Save the Platform Pack to your computer. 21

2. Click File, and then click Open. Browse to the place where you saved the downloaded Platform Pack. 3. Select the.ppk file that you downloaded, and then click Open. Your Platform Pack should look similar to the one in the following image: Note: Refer to this image for the following capabilities: importing, combining, editing, and extracting. 23
Importing and Combining Platform Packs You should combine support for all your computers into one Platform Pack. This helps keep the most current drivers in one place, and makes it easier to decide whether you have the necessary support available for different operating systems and hardware types. Platform Packs use a combination of single-instance storage and high compression to significantly reduce the space required to store files. Several gigabytes of files can be stored in one Platform Pack that is only a few hundred megabytes in size. To combine Platform Packs into a single file: 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Platform Manager. 2. Click File, and then click New. Browse to where you want to save your combined Platform Pack. Type a name for the combined Platform Pack; for example, Default.ppk, and then click Save. An empty Platform Pack will be created. Note: If the Platform Pack is named Default.ppk, and it is located in the same folder containing your images, it will automatically be processed by the Deploy Wizard at deployment time. 3. Click File, and then click Import. 4. Browse to the place where you downloaded the Platform Packs. Select a Platform Pack. Then click Open. For each Platform Pack that you want to include in the file, repeat steps 3 and 4. When you are done importing Platform Packs, close the Platform Manager. Editing Platform Packs You can modify an existing Platform Pack if you d like to add or remove support for a particular operating system. You can also add or remove support for a particular hardware device. This might be necessary if the downloaded Platform Pack includes support for multiple operating systems, but you do not require support for all of them. If you remove the operating systems that are not required you can significantly reduce the overall size of the Platform Pack. Remove support for an operating system from a Platform Pack 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Platform Manager. 2. Click File, and then click Open. Browse to the Platform Pack (.ppk) that has the operating system that you want to remove, and then click Open. 3. Expand the tree to the manufacturer and model you want to modify. 4. Right-click the operating system that you want to remove. Then click Delete. 5. In the confirmation dialog, click Yes. The operating system will be removed from the Platform Pack. 6. Click File and then Save. Add or remove drivers in a Platform Pack 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Platform Manager. 2. Click File, and then click Open. Browse to the Platform Pack (.ppk) that you want to modify, and then click Open. 3. Expand the tree to the manufacturer and model you want to modify. 4. Right-click the node you want to modify. Right-click functionality is available at the Make/Model, OS/Device node level. a. To add a driver, select Add, browse to the folder containing the driver you want to add, and click OK. b. 25 Extracting Platform Packs This functionality is available for advanced users. However, most editing tasks can be accomplished by simply right-clicking the appropriate node and selecting Add or Delete. 1. Right-click the Make, Model, OS or Device node that you want to modify. Then click Extract. 2. Browse to an empty folder or create a new folder for the extracted drivers. Then click OK. The device drivers are extracted to the folder. Caution: The next step deletes the entire operating system tree under the selected manufacturer and model. This includes all custom filters, tasks, and settings for the device drivers and supporting software. Make sure that you are working from a copy of the original Platform Pack, and take a few minutes to note this information so that it can be easily re-entered when needed at the end of this section. 3. In the Platform Manager, right-click the operating system that you just extracted, and then click Delete. Click OK. 4. Open Windows Explorer to the folder where the drivers were extracted. Do one of the following: a. To add drivers, add the desired files and/or folders. For more information and best practices, see Create a new Platform Pack. b. To remove drivers, delete the desired files and/or folders. 5. In the Platform Manager, expand the tree to the manufacturer and model you want to modify. 6. Right-click the computer model, then click Add. The Add new software dialog will appear. 7. In the Target operating system list, select the same operating system you just deleted. 8. Click Browse, and then select the platform folder that contains your device drivers. Click OK. 9. Browse the device driver tree and confirm your device drivers have been added. 10. Go through the device driver tree, and recreate the custom filters, tasks, and settings. 11. When you have finished your changes to the Platform Pack, click File, and then click Save. 25
Adding filters and tasks to Platform Packs If desired, you can add WMI filters and tasks to a Platform Pack so that they will run when the pack is deployed to a target computer. For more information about the WMI Filter Wizard, refer to Appendix 2: WMI Filters and Tasks, on page
Media Wizard You can use a single process to build deployment media for a target computer whether the computer is connected to a network or offline (such as a laptop at a remote location). The deployment media consists of the SmartDeploy Preinstallation environment, a Platform Pack with network and mass storage device drivers for the target computer, the image for standalone computers, plus optional components that allow remote installation and management during the deployment process. When you build standard boot media, only SmartPE, network and mass storage drivers, and optional environment components are created as part of the media. The offline deployment media includes the boot media, plus the computer image that you want to deploy and a Platform Pack that contains all of the device drivers for the target computer. Before you begin: Ensure that you have copied your SmartDeploy Enterprise license file to the folder where you installed SmartDeploy Enterprise. The default directory is C:\Program Files\SmartDeploy\SmartDeploy Enterprise. On x64 systems, the default directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\smartdeploy\smartdeploy Enterprise. 1. Click Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Media Wizard. 27

The Media Wizard can create images that span multiple disks, but all disks must be of the same type and capacity. If you select a removable drive, including external hard drives or USB drives, note that the drive will be formatted and all information on it will be lost. Click Next. a. If you created boot media for use with WDS Multicast, select the CD/DVD option, specify a location to save an ISO file. After the media is created you will have an.iso and a.wim file. The.wim file is used for WDS. 31
9. If you selected to burn a CD or DVD, the Save Options page appears. You can burn the image to an ISO file or to physical disks. Select the options for your image, and then click Next. 10. On the Creating Media page, click Finish. 11. When the deployment media is built, click OK. You can now deploy an image to the target computer. 32
Deploy Wizard SmartDeploy Enterprise can deploy an image to a target computer by using two methods: over a network or via standalone media. The Media Wizard can build deployment media for either method: creating a boot environment that can load an image over a network to the target computer, or creating a complete deployment solution including the deployment image to the target computer. This gives you flexibility in building and distributing images to computers regardless of location or connection type. Network Network deployment has two additional components that can help you deploy images over a network: SmartDeploy VNC Server. SmartDeploy VNC Server uses virtual network computing (VNC) to remotely connect to and administer the target computer during the deployment process. To do this, install a VNC client on your computer and then configure the client to connect to the SmartDeploy VNC Server by using the target computer s IP address. Depending on your network, you may need to configure it so that VNC can communicate by using the default port of You can find an overview of VNC and links to VNC client software at SmartDeploy Cloud Services. SmartDeploy Cloud Services uses Windows Remote Desktop to let a technician remote connect to a computer that is booted into SmartPE. The technician and the endpoint computer must be on the same network segment. For more information, download the Cloud Services guide. When you select a deployment image, you can choose a standard image or a differencing image. If the differencing image is stored in the same location as the standard image, both the differencing image and the standard image are applied to the target computer. The target computer will then have your latest updates applied to it. Media 1. Start the target computer and enter the BIOS settings. The keystroke sequence varies by manufacturer, so consult the computer s documentation for the sequence to do this. 2. Edit the boot sequence so the deployment media device is first on the list. Note: Some older computers do not support booting from a USB device, such as an external hard drive or USB memory stick. Check with your computer manufacturer to determine if this method is supported. If not, you will need to build deployment media that is supported by your target computer. 3. Insert the CD/DVD or attach the external device with the deployment environment to the target computer. 4. Restart the target computer. When prompted, press a key to boot the deployment environment. 33
5. In the SmartPE environment, you can click Settings to confirm the correct network and mass storage drivers for the target computer are loaded. Advanced users can also press Shift+F10 to open a Windows PE command window. 6. Click Deploy an image. The Deploy Wizard starts. 34
7. On the Welcome to the Deploy Wizard page, you have the option to customize several Advanced options that let you override default Sysprep settings during deployment. For details about the Advanced options, see Appendix 3: Deploy Wizard Advanced Options, page After you have finished any changes to the Advanced settings, click Next. The Select Image page appears. 35
9. Click Browse. If necessary, click Network to map and then browse to a network share where the image is located. Select the image, and then click Open. Note: If you are using boot media to install an image over a network, you will receive a message about not having a Platform Pack selected. You can browse to a network share that contains the Platform Pack containing support for your computer and select it at this time. If you want to remove this prompt, rename the Platform Pack file to default.ppk and copy it into the same directory as the image file (file extension.wim). 36
10. In the Image name drop-down list, select the image that you want to deploy. Click Next. 37
11. On the Disk Options page, select the method for applying the image to the target computer, and then click Next. Recreate drives will delete all existing partitions, recreate the necessary partitions, format the new partitions, and then write image data to the partitions. The new partition structure is based on the partition structure from the reference virtual machine, and will fill any previously unused space. Wipe and load drives will format only the target drives specified in the image, but will not change the target computer s hard disk partition scheme. You will receive an error if the existing partitions do not match the partition structure of the reference virtual machine. This method will let you leave a folder structure on the hard disk as defined in the Advanced Options, Migration tab (see page 65). 38
12. The Product Key page appears. If you did not specify a product key when you captured an image, you can type the product key now. Click Next. 13. On the User Information page, type the registered user s name and organization. Click Next. 39

LIMITED TRANSFER RIGHTS Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may transfer all your rights to use the Software to another person or legal entity provided that: (a) you also transfer each of this Agreement, the Software and all other software or hardware bundled or pre-installed with the Software, including all copies, updates and prior versions, and all copies of font software converted into other formats, to such person or entity; (b) you retain no copies, including backups and copies stored on a computer; (c) the receiving party is legally entitled to use the software; and (d) the receiving party accepts the terms and conditions of this Agree- 49
ment and any other terms and conditions upon which you legally purchased a license to the Software. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may not transfer education, pre-release, or not-for-resale copies of the Software. 4. PRE-RELEASE PRODUCT ADDITIONAL TERMS If the product you have received with this license is pre-commercial release or beta Software ( Prerelease Software ), then this Section applies. To the extent that any provision in this Section is in conflict with any other term or condition in this Agreement, this Section shall supersede such other term(s) and condition(s) with respect to the Pre-release Software, but only to the extent necessary to resolve the conflict. You acknowledge that the Software is a pre-release version, does not represent final product from SmartDeploy, and may contain bugs, errors and other problems that could cause system or other failures and data loss. CONSEQUENTLY, THE PRE-RELEASE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED TO YOU AS-IS, AND SmartDeploy DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY OR LIABILITY OBLIGATIONS TO YOU OF ANY KIND EX- PRESS OR IMPLIED. WHERE LEGALLY LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED FOR PRE-RELEASE SOFTWARE, BUT IT MAY BE LIMITED, SmartDeploy s LIABILITY AND THAT OF ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE SUM OF FIFTY DOLLARS (U.S.$50) IN TOTAL. Consequently, the Pre-release Software is provided to you as-is and SmartDeploy disclaims any warranty or liability obligations to you of any kind, express or implied. Where legal liability may be limited but not excluded as a result of jurisdictional precedents, SmartDeploy s liability and that of its suppliers shall be limited to the sum of fifty U.S. dollars ($50). You acknowledge that SmartDeploy has not promised or guaranteed to you that Pre-release Software will be announced or made available to anyone in the future, that SmartDeploy has no express or implied obligation to you to announce or introduce the Pre-release Software and that SmartDeploy may not introduce a product similar to or compatible with the Pre-release Software. Accordingly, you acknowledge that any research or development that you perform regarding the Pre-release Software or any product associated with the Pre-release Software is done entirely at your own risk. If you have been provided the Pre-release Software pursuant to a separate written agreement, your use of the Software is governed by such agreement. You may not sublicense, lease, loan, rent, distribute or otherwise transfer the Prerelease Software. Upon receipt of a later unreleased version of the Pre-release Software or release by SmartDeploy of a publicly released commercial version of the Software, whether as a stand-alone product or as part of a larger product, you agree to return or destroy all earlier Pre-release Software received from SmartDeploy and to abide by the terms of the license agreement for any such later versions of the Pre-release Software. 5. WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY (a) Limited Warranty. SmartDeploy warrants that (a) the Software will perform substantially in accordance with the SmartDeploy User s Guide for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of receipt, and (b) any support services provided by SmartDeploy shall be substantially as described in applicable written materials provided to you by SmartDeploy, and SmartDeploy support engineers will make commercially reasonable efforts to solve any problem issues. Some states and jurisdictions do not allow limitations on duration of an implied warranty, so the above limitation may not apply to you. To the extent allowed by applicable law, implied warranties on the Software, if any, are limited to ninety (90) days. (b) Customer Remedies. SmartDeploy s and its suppliers entire liability and your exclusive remedy shall be, at SmartDeploy s option, either (a) return of the price paid, if any, or (b) repair or replacement of the Software that does not meet SmartDeploy s Limited Warranty and which is returned to SmartDeploy with a copy of your receipt. This Limited Warranty is void if failure of the Software has resulted from accident, abuse or misapplication. Any replacement Software will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or thirty (30) days, whichever is longer. (c) No Other Warranties. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, SMARTDEPLOY AND ITS SUPPLIERS DISCLAIM ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, INFORMATIONAL CONTENT OR ACCURACY, QUIET ENJOYMENT, TITLE 50
AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, WITH REGARD TO THE SOFTWARE, AND THE PROVISION OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS. YOU MAY HAVE OTHERS, WHICH VARY FROM STATE/JURISDICTION TO STATE/JURISDICTION. (d) Limitation Of Liability. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL SMARTDEPLOY OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, DIRECT, INDI- RECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, OR ANY OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE OR THE PROVISION OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES, EVEN IF SMARTDEPLOY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN ANY CASE, SMARTDEPLOY s ENTIRE LI- ABILITY UNDER ANY PROVISION OF THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT ACTUALLY PAID BY YOU FOR THE SOFTWARE PRODUCT OR U.S.$ HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE ENTERED INTO A SMARTDEPLOY SUPPORT SERVICES AGREEMENT, SMARTDEPLOY S ENTIRE LI- ABILITY REGARDING SUPPORT SERVICES SHALL BE GOVERNED BY THE TERMS OF THAT AGREEMENT. Because some states and jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability, the above limitation may not apply to you. In such states and jurisdictions, SMARTDEPLOY S liability shall be limited to the greatest extent permitted by law. (e) Infringement Claims. SMARTDEPLOY will indemnify and hold you harmless and will defend or settle any claim, suit or proceeding brought against you that is based upon a claim that the content contained in the Software infringes a copyright or violates an intellectual or proprietary right protected by United States law ( Claim ), but only to the extent the Claim arises directly out of the use of the Software. You must notify SMARTDEPLOY in writing of any Claim within ten (10) business days after you first receive notice of the Claim, and you shall provide to SMARTDEPLOY at no cost with such assistance and cooperation as SMARTDEPLOY may reasonably request from time to time in connection with the defense of the Claim. SMARTDEPLOY shall have sole control over any Claim (including, without limitation, the selection of counsel and the right to settle on your behalf on any terms SMARTDEPLOY deems desirable in the sole exercise of its discretion). You may, at your sole cost, retain separate counsel and participate in the defense or settlement negotiations. SMARTDEPLOY shall pay actual damages and costs awarded against you (or payable by you pursuant to a settlement agreement) in connection with a Claim to the extent such damages and costs are not reimbursed to you by insurance or a third party, to an aggregate maximum of US$1,000. If the Software or its use becomes the subject of a Claim or its use is enjoined, or if in the opinion of SMARTDEPLOY S legal counsel the Software is likely to become the subject of a Claim, SMARTDEPLOY shall attempt to resolve the Claim by using commercially reasonable efforts to modify the Software or obtain a license to continue using the Software. If in the opinion of SMARTDE- PLOY s legal counsel the Claim, the injunction or potential Claim cannot be resolved through reasonable modification or licensing, SMARTDEPLOY, at its own election, may terminate this Agreement without penalty, and will refund to you on a pro rata basis any fees paid in advance by you to SMARTDEPLOY. THE FOREGOING CONSTITUTES SMARTDEPLOY s SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE LIABILITY FOR INTELLECTU- AL PROPERTY INFRINGEMENT. 6. TERM AND TERMINATION This Agreement may be terminated (a) by your giving SmartDeploy written notice of termination; or (b) by SmartDeploy, at its option, giving you written notice of termination if you commit a breach of this Agreement and fail to cure such breach within ten (10) days after notice from SmartDeploy. Upon any termination of this Agreement, you must cease all use of the Software, destroy all copies then in your possession or control and take such other actions as SmartDeploy may reasonably request to ensure that no copies of the Software remain in your possession or control. 7. GENERAL PROVISIONS If there is a local subsidiary of SmartDeploy in the country in which the Software was obtained, then the local law of the jurisdiction in which the subsidiary is located shall govern this Agreement. Otherwise, this Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the United States of America. This Agreement contains 51
the entire agreement and understanding of the parties with respect to the subject matter hereof, and supersedes all prior written and oral understandings of the parties with respect to the subject matter hereof. Any notice or other communication given under this Agreement shall be in writing and shall have been properly given by either of us to the other if sent by certified or registered mail, return receipt requested, or by overnight courier to the address shown on SmartDeploy s Web site for SmartDeploy and the address shown in SmartDeploy s records for you, or such other address as the parties may designate by notice given in the manner set forth above. This Agreement will bind and inure to the benefit of the parties and our respective heirs, personal and legal representatives, affiliates, successors and permitted assigns. The failure of either of us at any time to require performance of any provision hereof shall in no manner affect such party s right at a later time to enforce the same or any other term of this Agreement. This Agreement may be amended only by a document in writing signed by both of us. In the event of a breach or threatened breach of this Agreement by either party, the other shall have all applicable equitable as well as legal remedies. The Software and its related documentation may not be exported or re-exported in violation of the U.S. Export Administration Act and its implementing regulations or the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Software was obtained. Each party is duly authorized and empowered to enter into and perform this Agreement. If, for any reason, any provision of this Agreement is held invalid or otherwise unenforceable, such invalidity or unenforceability shall not affect the remainder of this Agreement, and this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect to the fullest extent allowed by law. The parties knowingly and expressly consent to the foregoing terms and conditions. 52
Appendix 1: Creating Custom Platform Packs In almost all cases, you will not have to create a new Platform Pack from scratch. It is easier to download an existing Platform Pack from the SmartDeploy website for your specific platform. If your computer model is not listed on the SmartDeploy website, send a request to [email protected] and ask for one to be built for you. Creating a new Platform Pack is more suitable for advanced system administrators who support diverse hardware environments. However, with enough analysis and planning, you can create your own Platform Pack. When you plan for a Platform Pack, follow these best practices: Include support for as many operating systems as you can within a Platform Pack. It is better to build in support even if it is not currently needed than to need it and not have it. This is especially useful for remote locations; you can distribute a Platform Pack that is designed to support all operating systems and have it available when you need it. Include support for Windows PE. Windows PE provides the start-up environment for SmartPE, but it may not support newer network or mass storage devices. By adding Windows PE as a supported operating system, you ensure that the target computer can be started with the appropriate support before imaging. When planning for Windows PE drivers be sure to utilize Windows 7 x86 drivers. Install device-dependent software from a Platform Pack; install device-independent software on the reference computer. Modem software specific to the modem chip used in a laptop would be appropriate for a Platform Pack. Device-independent software that you intend to run on all target computers, such as a plug-in for playing DVD discs, should be installed on the reference computer. Step 1: Download device drivers and support software 1. Open a browser and go to the computer manufacturer s website. For example, if you are adding support for a Dell Latitude E6400, you can find device drivers for that model by visiting the support section of 2. Locate the device drivers and support software for the computer model and operating system you would like to support. Note: Make sure the files you select can be used with the operating system you intend to deploy. The device drivers must match the operating system version, such as Windows XP, and the processor architecture, such as 32-bit. 3. Download the files to a temporary folder on your hard disk. Step 2: Create a new platform folder and extract device drivers 1. Open Windows Explorer and create a new folder on your hard disk. Name the folder based on the manufacturer, such as C:\Dell. 2. Go to the new manufacturer folder and create a new folder. Name the folder based on the model, such as C:\Dell\Latitude E Go to the new model folder and create a new folder. Name the folder based on the operating system, such as C:\Dell\Latitude E6400\Windows XP. 4. Go to the new operating system folder and create new folders for each device class, such as C:\Dell\Latitude E6400\Windows XP\Audio. Note: If there is more than one device driver or manufacturer for a device class, create new folders in the device class folder as required. For example, if there are two different video card manufacturers for a computer model, create folders for each manufacturer in the video folder. 53
5. Review the new platform folder structure. The hierarchy should be similar to the following: 6. Extract (do not install) each of the device driver packages to their respective folders. Note: Many device driver and support packages are self-extracting, or can be easily extracted with file compression software such as WinZip. Some packages can be difficult to extract, such as Setup (EXE) files. Sometimes Setup files can be extracted by using the /s /e command line switches. This will extract, but not install the software. The default extract folder varies, but it will almost always be a new folder at the root of your Windows volume. Microsoft Software Installer (MSI) packages can often be extracted by performing an administrative install. For example, msiexec.exe /a installpackage.msi /qb TARGETDIR=C:\Temp will extract the contents of the MSI package to C:\Temp. Once extracted, use Windows Explorer to move the files to their respective folders. 7. Optionally, you can remove any unnecessary files, such as files for other processor architectures. This is an advanced step that should only be performed by advanced systems administrators that are familiar with device driver installation architecture. Step 3: Create a new Platform Pack 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > Platform Manager. 54
2. Click File, and then click New. Browse to the place where you want to save your new Platform Pack. Type a name for your new Platform Pack, and then click Save. 3. In the tree pane, right-click Platform Pack, and then click Add. The Add new manufacturer dialog appears. 4. In the Manufacturer name list, select the computer manufacturer s name. Ensure that Automatically generate filters is selected, and then click OK. 5. In the tree pane, right-click the new manufacturer folder, and then click Add. The Add new model dialog appears. 6. In the Model name field, type the computer model name, and then click OK. Important: The model name is used to uniquely identify the computer model during deployment. If you do not know the exact model name of the computer, click Run Wizard to start the WMI Filter Wizard. This will let you identify the manufacturer, model, and other properties of a computer. 7. Right-click the new model folder, and then click Add. The Add new software dialog box appears. 8. In the Target operating system list, select the appropriate operating system. 9. Click Browse, and then select the operating system folder that you created in step 2. For example, C:\Dell\Latitude \Windows XP. Click OK. Note: It is important to select the operating system folder and not the manufacturer, model, or software level folders. 10. Browse the device driver tree, and confirm your device drivers have been added. When you have finished your changes to the Platform Pack, click File, and then click Save. 55
Appendix 2: WMI Filters and Tasks Access the WMI Filter Wizard by clicking Run wizard on the Add/edit filter pane of the Platform Manager. You can use the WMI Filter Wizard to add filters and tasks that tailor a Platform Pack to specific computers. SmartDeploy Enterprise uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) commands to customize an image with device-specific hardware. Because filters and WMI tasks can be complex, you should look at existing Platform Packs to see how the filters and commands are used to deploy drivers and software, and then develop and test your own Platform Packs before you put them into production. SmartDeploy Enterprise uses filters to query a target computer for information about its hardware and environment, and then run specific tasks on the target computer that meet the filter criteria. When an image is deployed, SmartPE uses WMI to run the filters and tasks against the target computer. WMI allows scripting languages, such as VBScript or Windows PowerShell, to manage Windows-based personal computers and servers locally and remotely. 56
The SmartDeploy SDK contains component references and sample scripts that you can study and modify for your environment. You can find the SmartDeploy SDK by clicking Start > All Programs > SmartDeploy > SmartDeploy Enterprise > SDK & Tools. For more information about WMI syntax, see the WMI Reference at the Microsoft MSDN website. 57
Filters At each level in a Platform Pack, you can use filters to query the target computer for specific conditions, and then take action based on the data returned by the query. 58
The Platform Manager also includes a Comments field at each level so you can capture information about the purpose of a filter, specific tasks and expected results, or other data that you may find useful in managing or troubleshooting computers and environments. The Platform Manager provides a Modify Query pane with a general error-handling mechanism that lets you determine how SmartPE will respond when errors are generated during the deployment process. The Unknown platform action drop-down list lets you select from three different error-handling responses: Do nothing and allow deployment to continue, Display a warning dialog and allow deployment to continue (default), or Display an error dialog and do not allow deployment to continue. These help you during the Platform Pack testing phase. Upon completing the wizard, the filter will be copied to the clipboard so that you can add it to the Platform Manager pane. Filters are available at every level except the operating system level. Multiple filters can be added using AND / OR conditions so you can build specific tests and conditions for all computers in your organization. Filters can be run against the SmartDeploy image contents or, using WMI, against a target computer. 59
Tasks You can use tasks to make changes to images during the deployment phase. For example, you can use them to create partitions on hard disk drives, add device drivers to computer images, or install software on the image. There are five different times that you can run tasks, with different security contexts for each: Before image is applied. The task is run directly before the image is applied. This phase is often used to run custom disk configuration scripts. The Windows PE system account is used to run tasks during this phase. After image is applied. The task is run at the very end of Windows PE before the machine reboots. This phase is often used to check the BIOS version and apply the latest if it is not already installed on the target computer. The Windows PE system account is used to run tasks during this phase. Specialize / Mini-Setup. The task is run while Windows Setup completes configuration of the target computer. This phase is often used to install support software for devices such as modems and touchpads. Best practice is to run these tasks using a silent installation option as well as a no restart option. Manufacturers often use different syntax for these options; check with the hardware vendor for the appropriate switches. The local system account is used to run tasks during this phase. First boot as system. The task is run during first boot into the operating system. The local system account is used to run tasks during this phase. First logon to desktop. The task is run during the first logon into a user s account. The user account is used to run tasks during this phase. Since user accounts can have different level of access to the computer, it is recommended to only use this phase for tasks that do not require administrative permissions. When including applications in your tasks, ensure you have added the appropriate software to the Platform Pack and that you point to the correct application in the Platform Pack. Command-line switches can be added for silent installation or no-restart options. 60
Appendix 3: Deploy Wizard Advanced Options Access these options by clicking the Advanced button on the Deploy Wizard start screen. 61
General Tab Platform Pack By default the Deploy Wizard looks for a Platform Pack named default.ppk located in the same folder as the image that you are deploying. If you want to change this default, you can do so here. System Properties By default, some Windows Sysprep actions will override settings that you may have made on your reference virtual machine and master installation. This tab gives you the option of overriding several default Windows behaviors to preserve the configuration of your reference machine during deployment. Disk and File Systems Disable system restore. If system restore was disabled in the reference VM, check this box to ensure it is disabled on the deployed computer. Restore drive letter assignments. By default, after deployment drives will be assigned the first available letter. If you had a custom drive letter setting in the reference VM, check this box to retain the custom setting. Security Enable local administrator account. In Windows Vista and higher, Sysprep will disable the local administrator account after deployment is complete. Select this option to re-enable it. System Properties Preserve crash control settings. If you set up custom crash control settings on your reference VM (e.g. if you set the machine to automatically write the crash log after a blue screen), you should check this box to preserve the custom settings on the deployed machine. 62
User Properties Preserve custom desktop icons. Check this box to preserve any custom desktop icons (e.g. shortcuts) on the deployed machine. Boot Reboot after deployment. If this box is checked, the machine will automatically reboot after the image has been deployed. Identification tab By default, SmartDeploy Enterprise will automatically set a computer name. Use the options on this tab to customize the naming process. Assign a new computer name automatically. If this option is selected, SmartDeploy Enterprise will use the following hierarchy to assign a name to the deployed computer: 1. Use existing computer name. If the computer already has a name (e.g. if you are deploying a new image to an existing machine), SmartDeploy Enterprise will detect it. 2. Read from WMI property. The next priority is to read from a WMI property, such as an asset tag. 3. Custom name. If the machine has no WMI property to read, SmartDeploy Enterprise will assign a random name based on the scheme A########, where each # is a random digit. Use custom naming methods. If this option is selected, you can modify the naming hierarchy by moving the options up or down in the list. You can also modify the WMI query (e.g. to look for the machine serial number rather than asset tag), or set up a custom naming scheme with different prefixes or a different number of random digits. 63
Migration tab If you are using the Wipe and Load disk option, you can choose a protected folder by using the Browse function on this tab. By default, SmartDeploy Enterprise will protect the C:\Backup folder. 64
Tasks Tab This tab gives you the option of creating custom tasks that will run during deployment. Its functionality is similar to the Filters and Tasks functionality in Platform Manager (see above, p.27 and p.58) Tasks can be created at one of 5 phases of deployment. Before the image is applied (before disk partition) After the image is applied Specialize/Mini setup (during Sysprep) Upon first boot as system Upon first logon to desktop The main difference between the Tasks tab in Deploy Wizard and the Filters and Tasks functionality in Platform Manager is that if you set up tasks through the Deploy Wizard, they will run on all deployments, rather than a specific hardware type. 65
Appendix 4: Exporting an XML Answer File To export an answer file that you can use to automate each deployment, click the Export button on the Summary page of the Deploy Wizard. Note: When you complete the Deploy Wizard, SmartDeploy Enterprise populates an answer file for unattended deployment, and uses the information you provided in steps 12) through 17) of the Deploy Wizard process (see p.40). When the target computer restarts, the first-run setup GUI is loaded and the operating system uses the values in the answer file to configure the target computer. If any information from steps 12) through 17) is missing, the operating system will ask you to fill in the necessary information. 66
1. You will be prompted to: a. Choose a location to save the file. b. Select whether the answer file is for unattended or attended deployment. 67
c. Supply network credentials of any mapped network drives. 2. The wizard will then generate an XML file. The XML can be edited directly or the user can run the Deploy Wizard again to change it. To use the answer file that you generate with the Deploy Wizard, launch the Media Wizard, go to the optional components page (see p.31), and select the answer file. Examples of XML edits that you may want to perform Change from attended to unattended deployment This is what the XML file will look like for an attended deployment: <?xml version= 1.0 encoding= utf-8?> <smartdeploy version= 1.1 version_debug= > <deploy_wizard> To change to unattended deployment, add: mode= Unattended to the deploy wizard tag. <?xml version= 1.0 encoding= utf-8?> <smartdeploy version= 1.1 version_debug= > <deploy_wizard mode= Unattended > 68
Change the default unattended delay time By default, an unattended deployment will present a 60 second countdown before continuing with the deployment: <settings> <active_directory/> <network_shares/> <proxy_server> <proxy_server_url/> <username/> <password/> </proxy_server> <session_id/> <unattend_delay/> </settings> </deploy_wizard> </smartdeploy> To change this, open the node and specify a number of seconds other than 60 (e.g. <unattend_delay>30</unattend_delay> would produce a 30-second delay). Please note that this delay is intended to ensure that all hardware resources are avialable when deployment starts. The minimum usable value for the unattend delay is 10 seconds; anything lower than that will cause the value to revert to 60. Skipping certain Deploy Wizard pages Each page of the Deploy Wizard can be set to require user input or to run automatically. You can set the value for each page: skip value: 0 = do not skip, 1 = skip. For example, the following change would cause the Wizard to skip the image selection page: <select_image skip= 1 > <image_file>z:\smartdeploy\wim\windows 7.wim</image_file> <image_name>windows 7 x86</image_name> </select_image> When using skip = 1 to skip a page please note that the answer file must be in attended mode. If you wish to skip all but one page you will need to set skip = 1 on each of the Deploy Wizard pages you wish to skip. 69
