2 The short course in Salford has opened my mind to an inspiring teaching and studying method compared to China. And the MediaCityUK campus provided us with a great industry link platform to work with world leading companies. Particularly I improved my teamwork skills through the poster design group project for BBC show Mock the Dock. Fan Yang Luxun Academy of Fine Arts Welcome Welcome to the School of Arts & Media at the University of Salford. The University of Salford is at the heart of the second largest city in the UK: Manchester a city which is famous for music, culture and the arts, as well as a fabulous place to study. I was amazed by Manchester as it has such rich cultural heritage. There is so much to entertain and it is a great place to study art and design as you can never find a day that no exhibition or play is on. Sinong Ding Luxun Academy of Fine Arts Joining us for a short course, you will enjoy a unique learning experience. You ll be studying at our MediaCityUK campus which is located in the largest hub for the digital and creative industries outside of London. 5 MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE Popular Music & Recording: 6-17 July 2015 This course will be run by some of the country s leading freelance musicians who will bring a wealth of experience to the classroom, giving you the insight and preparation needed in the professional world. Focusing on your instrumental proficiency, this course will develop your skills across two different activities: The session component aims to develop your performance skills through simulating a professional performance environment. You will be put into groups of at least five and will work to rehearse a song from lead sheets under the direction of a tutor. Close attention will be paid to accurately recreating the feel of a particular style and your ensemble skills. The song will then be recorded in one of our studios and every student will receive a copy of the recording. Within the ensemble component, you will have the opportunity to form your own popular music group, writing and rehearsing original material. You will form yourselves into groups consisting of no fewer than 5 musicians, and work to produce a 20 minute set to be performed and recorded live at a local venue. The material performed will either be original or creative re-arrangements of existing songs supplied by you, or a mix of both. There are no stylistic constraints, but you are encouraged to forge an identifiable stylistic direction throughout your set, while employing a variety of compositional ideas and techniques within the material. You will have the opportunity to rehearse in one of our many fully equipped rehearsal spaces with state of the art equipment and engineers at hand to help you. Please note that you must have a competent ability to read music to attend this course. You will have fully notated charts similar to that of the standard set by Grade 5 Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Chord recognition is an important requisite for pianists and guitarists. You will also need to bring your instruments with you, although we will provide larger items such as pianos/keyboards, drums and amplifiers. Comedy Performance Skills: 6-17 July 2015 This course explores comedy performance skills through practical workshops and will be taught by Dr Richard Talbot. Starting with games to release the performer s playfulness and moving quickly into working with the clown, the course introduces concepts such as complicity, bafflement, and the flop (a productive reversal of performance failure ). You will be encouraged to discover your individual humour and to apply the figure of the clown to group work on some classic scenarios. In dialogue with practice, the course introduces theories of laughter and the carnivalesque in order to analyse the social function of laughter.
