6 Introduction Lenovo Management Strategy The bewildering pace in datacenter operations management requires flexible, agile technologies, which quickly deliver business benefits. Lenovo s platform management strategy focuses on providing versatile, intuitive tools and open standards-based protocols. Lenovo collaborates closely with the most innovative and respected management software providers like VMware and Microsoft, offering Partner Packs that optimized system resources and powerful utilities for improved visibility, control and faster time to value. Lenovo s strategy targets the primary maintenance tasks of platform management, providing robust tools that are easy to use and connect seamlessly to an existing management console based on IPMI and native OS interfaces. This simplifies platform management and reduces expenses by eliminating the need to buy another console. Versatility is critical to Lenovo s strategy, as customers often have infrastructure investments managed with either VMware or Microsoft and often both. Lenovo has partnered with both of these world-class partners to provide plug-ins for enterprise-trusted management solutions including Microsoft System Center and VMware vsphere vcenter Server. And, moving forward, customers will be able to take advantage of new features designed to make platform management even simpler and more efficient, with mobile enablement tools that allow management from almost any device. Customers will also have the opportunity to use Partner Packs for more of the platforms they already use as Lenovo expands coverage of the most popular management platforms. System Center Operations Manager Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is part of the Microsoft Systems Center suite, and provides the operational management functions such as health monitoring, performance data collection, and administrator initiated or automated actions. SCOM provides a strong XML based Management Pack interface to allow Microsoft and 3 rd party vendors to add additional functionality to SCOM, including Network, Server, and Storage hardware and software management. The Lenovo Partner Pack for SCOM is implemented as a Management Pack. Lenovo Partner pack for Systems Center Operations Manager The Lenovo Partner Pack for SCOM automatically discovers and provides detailed system information about the Lenovo ThinkServer managed servers, including component inventory, and component and sensor status. The Partner Pack also enables actions such as restarting or powering off the ThinkServer and accessing the Remote Desktop Console via RDP and accessing the ThinkServer Management Module (TMM) interface. Implemented as a Management Pack for SCOM, the Partner Pack is integrated into SCOM using the native Management Pack 6

7 interface allowing IT administrators to manage ThinkServers using familiar tools and one pane of glass management. The Partner Pack uses In-Band management to manage ThinkServers running Microsoft Windows Operating Systems with the System Center Agent installed. Unlike options from other server providers, the Lenovo Partner Pack integrates into SCOM and does not require the installation of additional consoles or software. Please see the Installation Guide for ThinkServers that support the Lenovo Partner Pack 1. Deployment Architecture Overview There are five components involved in the Partner Pack for SCOM implementation and operation: 1. Operations Manager Management Server 2. Operations Management Console 3. Managed Systems 4. Systems Center Agent 5. Management Packs. Operations Manager Management Server The Operations Manager Management Server is the focal for a SCOM deployment. This server is responsible for operational data management, agent communication, and providing data for the Operations Management Console. Through a Management console, the Partner Pack for SCOM is integrated into the Management Server as a Management Pack. Operations Management Console The Operations management Console is the interface used to manage a SCOM environment. This is where the administrator can configure SCOM, view status of the managed components, and act on alerts. The Partner Pack is integrated into the SCOM Management Server by the administrator through the Operations Management Console. Managed Systems The managed system either runs a System Center Agent or responds to requests from a proxy running a System Center Agent in an agentless configuration. Managed systems that are Lenovo Servers will automatically populate in the Lenovo view folder after Partner Pack installation if the server is running a Windows Operating System and is an Agent managed system. 1 The Installation guide link is provided in the References section below 7

8 Systems Center Agent The System Center agent is deployed on managed servers. These agents respond to requests from the management server, collect data, and perform actions based on the installed Management Packs. Management Packs Management packs contain settings for monitoring applications, services, and hardware. They can provide monitoring data, rules, tasks, and views. Some management packs are provided by Microsoft, and many are provided by Microsoft partners such as Lenovo. Management packs are imported into the SCOM Management Server through the Operations Management Console. The management pack from Lenovo, called the Lenovo Partner Pack, provides actions, inventory data, and monitoring specific to the Lenovo ThinkServer. Installation Process Pre-installation tasks Prior to installation, ensure that the latest updates and the prerequisites are installed, including.net Framework 4.0 or above, Microsoft Report Viewer, and PowerShell 2.0 or above. Installation Run the TMM SCOM Installer.MSI installation file from the installation package and follow the prompts. This will extract the Lenovo Partner Pack for System Center Operations Manager into the directory you choose during the installation process. The default location is c:\program Files (x86)\lenovo\tmm SCOM Installer\. For detailed information please refer to the Installation Guide. Post-Installation tasks After the installation completes, open the Operations Manager Console. Navigate to the Administration tab. On the right side of the main screen, choose Import Management Packs. 8

9 Figure 1 - Administration Landing Page Click on and choose Add from Disk. You can safely select No to the prompt to search online for dependencies. Figure 2 - Catalog Connection Prompt In the file navigator, navigate to the installation directory and choose the Lenovo.TMM.Server.MP file, then click Open. 9

10 Figure 3 - File Navigation You will see a message saying, Management Pack is ready to import. Click Install. The Management Server will import the Management Pack, and then you can close the window. Choosing the Monitoring tab will bring you to the Monitoring interface, where you will see a new Lenovo folder. Note: It will take some time for the agents to update with the new management pack and gather data. At that time, you will begin to see servers populate under the Lenovo navigation tree. Removal In order to delete the Management Package from SCOM, open the Operations Management console. Navigate to, and then select the Lenovo TMM Management Pack. Click Delete displayed on the top right side to delete the management pack. SCOM will delete the management pack from the platform and the agents on the managed servers. 10

11 To remove the Management Pack installation files from the server, use the Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel. NOTE: Uninstalling the Management Pack alone does not remove the management pack from SCOM. Troubleshooting Importing a Management Pack fails, Event ID Delete the old version of the management pack and import the new version Servers do not Auto Populate in the Lenovo navigation tree under the Monitor tab. This is most likely a timing issue. Deploying the management pack to agents and retrieving the data is time consuming, please try again after a couple hours. Using the Partner Pack The Lenovo Partner Pack for System Center Operations Manager presents the data for the managed server in two view folders: Host Actions and Inventory. Host Actions The Host actions view folder contains one view, Hosts. The Hosts view lists discovered servers and provides the Host Name and the TMM IP address. In the right hand panel there is a Host Tasks area with four actions available: 1. Launch RDP Console to the selected server 2. Launch the TMM console 3. Power off the server 4. Restart the server 11

12 Figure 4 - Hosts View Inventory In the Inventory view folder, there are six views with inventory and monitoring information. The views show all of the managed components from all discovered servers. Some users find this overwhelming. Using the search panel at the top will allow you to filter the view to the components for the servers or groups of servers you wish to view. The Fans view shows the fans for all discovered servers, including current state, current speed, fan name, and status. 12

13 Figure 5 - Fans View Selecting a fan will show the details of that fan. The Memory view shows the DIMMS for all servers managed. Selecting an individual DIMM will show details for that DIMM including Type, Channel Location, Capacity, Serial Number, and Part 13

14 Number. Figure 6 - Memory View In the Processors view, the managed processors are listed along with the state of each processor. Selecting a processor will show additional details for that processor, including Manufacturer, Model, Speed, Socket, Logical Processors, Cores, and Cache sizes. 14

15 Figure 7 - Processors View In addition to the number of processors, logical processors (threads) and number of cores, the Server information view also displays the number of virtual machines a server is hosting as well as the BIOS version. 15

17 Figure 9 - System Board View The final view, Temperature Sensors, shows the current temperature in each zone managed. Choosing a zone will also display thresholds and current status. 17

By choosing to integrate with the most popular platforms such as Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, Lenovo is ensuring that customers will have the features they need to manage their environments in the tools customers use most. The Lenovo Partner Plugin for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager provides the key system information and actions that enable customers to effectively manage the Lenovo ThinkServer without leaving the SCOM interface. 18
