2 the Antioch tradition History Antioch was founded in 1852 in Yellow Springs, Ohio, as a private, liberal arts college. Horace Mann, known as the founder of the American public school system, was the first president. Mann believed in educating the whole person, not just the mind. Though Antioch s curriculum was based on the Harvard model of the day, Mann pioneered the introduction of coeducation, nonsectarianism, and nonsegregation in order to educate minds free from prejudice and yearning after truth. While the Antioch of today continues Mann s commitment to the education of the whole person, Antiochian philosophy has also been greatly influenced by Arthur Morgan, who became president in Morgan s genius was to ask students not to wait for the end of their time at the College to move into the work world, but to travel back and forth, making the movement the focus of their learning. His introduction of this work-study program into a liberal arts college broke tradition, making Antioch unique among colleges of its day. Antioch s credentials also include federal government recognition of eligibility for various forms of federal assistance, grants, and contracts, including the eligibility of Antioch students for federal financial aid and veteran s benefits. The University is in compliance with appropriate federal laws and regulations concerning civil rights, affirmative action, tax exemption, and eligibility for foundation support. As a matter of policy and in accordance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 and other state and federal laws, Antioch University Midwest does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, religion, handicap, age, sexual preference, or marital status in recruiting and admitting students, awarding financial aid, recruiting and hiring faculty and staff, or operating any of its programs and activities. 3 a collaborative framework for change ECE Generalist Endorsement Candidates in the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement program will come to know and understand the changes students in Grades 4 and 5 will experience cognitively, behaviorally, socially and emotionally - as they move toward adolescence. Candidates will engage in exploring hands-on pedagogical strategies and activities that they can use to create a need-to-know environment that encourages inquiry, creativity and inventiveness. The 13.5 quarter credit ECE Generalist Endorsement program consists of 5 classes that prepare professionally licensed PK-3 teachers to earn a 4th & 5th grade endorsement in the content areas of Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies. The classes are designed for practicing licensed ECE professionals and are offered during the summer. Program Features Integrated Curriculum Consistent with the best practices in education, you will learn through classes conducted in a seminar format and with course work organized in modules. Courses integrate varied learning styles and multiple intelligences. Experienced Faculty Faculty members have extensive experience in PK-12 classroom teaching and higher education. These experiences make the faculty uniquely qualified to combine theory with the reality of practice and provide you with a rich and highly applicable learning experience. Computer Technology Oriented to the Educator You will use internet technologies to learn, teach, and facilitate networking and communication with your cohort members and your faculty. Student Centered, non-graded Alternative Evaluation Your progress is evaluated based on predetermined competencies that must be met in order to receive course credit. In addition, you will produce portfolios that promote self-reflection and serve as valuable ongoing resources as you enter the teaching profession. Only evaluations equivalent to the traditional letter grades of A or B will receive credit for the course. Students who require letter grades for tuition reimbursement are asked to complete a letter grade equivalency form available from the program office. Program Benefits 1. Aimed at PK-3 licensed teachers seeking to extend their license to include grades 4 & Makes PK-3 licensed teachers eligible to teach grades 4 & 5 in the content areas of Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies. 3. Pre-Requisites - Some pre-requisites may be waived if you pass Praxis We still require that you take an Ohio History course. Ohio History Course will be offered through our Educational Leadership Summer Series program. Please see enclosed transcript evaluation form at the end of this packet. 3. 4 coursework The following courses are required for the ECE Generalist Endorsement program. Note: The ECE Generalist Endorsement program is available only to those teachers who hold a PK-3 license. Required Courses ECE Generalist Endorsement Courses: Development and Learning in Grades 4 and Credits (On Line) Candidates will expand their knowledge of theories and research relative to age-appropriate behaviors, development, etc., of typical and atypical students, ages eight to twelve through this on-line course. Candidates will gain an understanding of the bio-psycho-social factors and their impact upon classroom management, instruction, and assessment. They will also explore opportunities, responsibilities and challenges encountered when working with pre-adolescent students, i.e., including integrated learning approaches, multi-aged pedagogical arrangements, transitioning into the culture, organization, and context of middle school, schoolwithin-a-school structure [house concept], looping, teaming, etc. Language Arts Instruction for the 4/5 Classroom The teachers licensed in Early Childhood will enhance their knowledge and skills in designing language arts instruction appropriate for students in grades 4 and 5. The Early Childhood educator will use his/her understanding of human development and learning of typical and atypical students as foundation for designing language-based multidisciplinary instruction with an emphasis on the concepts noted within the Ohio Language Arts Standards for Grades 4 and 5. science content to meet the needs of all students in grades 4 and 5, aged Candidates will learn to integrate different viewpoints, theories, and processes to guide their instruction and assessment in ways to meet the differentiated needs of all learners. Focus will be on providing cross-curricular, inquiry based, learner-centered instruction that promotes active learning. Social Studies Methods for Grades 4 and 5 This course builds upon the scientific method as applied to social studies. The candidates will investigate multiple instructional methodologies that can be used to teach the various concepts outlined within the Ohio Social Studies Standards, i.e., economics, geography, government, cultures, citizenship, etc. Math Methods for Grades 4 and 5 The candidate in the ECE Generalist Endorsement program must understand what it means to know and do mathematics and about how children come to make sense of mathematics because those two beliefs will affect how he/she will approach mathematics instruction. Consequently, this course will focus on enhancing Early Childhood licensed teachers conceptual understanding of the mathematics content related to grades 4-5, including probability, graphing/statistics, algebra/patterning, multiplication, division, problem solving, geometry, logic, etc. Science Curriculum Development for Grades 4 and 5 To empower children to be able to inquire, discover, and understand science requires a foundation of general knowledge about science. 5 Evaluations Notes Students of Antioch University Midwest are provided with an alternative evaluation upon completion of the course, rather than a traditional letter grade. If you need letter-grade equivalents for employer reimbursement only, you may request the form from the program office. Faculty Faculty members have extensive backgrounds in public school administration and teaching, as well as higher education. This makes the faculty uniquely qualified to combine theory with the reality of practice, providing the quality of teaching and advising to appropriately match your experience in the profession. Internet Technologies Because the Internet is an essential tool for building and enhancing your learning experience, Antioch University Midwest provides our Intranet system, which may be accessed via your standard internet service provider. You will be using this system to communicate with your advisor, your fellow students, and your support offices; to identify learning resources, and to periodically obtain and submit course assignments. A computer with access to an internet service provider and web browser is a requirement of your education with these programs.
