The lifespan of this logo is from August 2012 until the end of the academic year 2013/14, although it should not be used on new materials from December 2013 onwards. The 50th Anniversary logo should be used in conjunction with the University of York s official logo and in a similarly coherent and consistent way. You will find details on how to insert the 50th Anniversary logo into your signature on the inside back cover of this brochure. I would be grateful if you could observe these guidelines when you use the 50th Anniversary logo in printed or online material relating to the 50th Anniversary. 3 The 50th Anniversary logo THE LOGO The logo takes inspiration from the calligraphic treatment of the words of York in the University s logo. There are two versions that can be used: the full version and the compact version. The logo should be treated as a stand-alone element and not be placed in close proximity to the University logo or other permitted logos. PROTECTION AREA There is an invisible protection area around the logo which must not be encroached upon. It should measure more than the depth or width of the numeral 0. 6 Design standards Using the logo: both versions COLOURWAYS 1 The preferred colour for both the full and compact versions of the logo is a gradiated orange or a gradiated grey (specified below). 1 3 C0 M40 Y100 K0 C23 M98 Y100 K0 1 3 Open Days in 2008 Wednesday 2 July Friday 3 October C0 M0 Y0 K15 C0 M0 Y0 K50 2 Alternatively, the logo can be in black or white (reversed out on a dark background), or in your department s official colour palette. 3 The logo may be used in white on a coloured or photographic background, but there must be sufficient contrast to allow the logo to be clearly visible. The background must be at least 50% to have sufficient contrast. 4 The logo can also be reproduced in a silver ink or silver foil if the background is dark enough. 7 Misuse of the logo INCORRECT MODIFICATION The logo must not be modified in any way. 8 Design standards Watermark element THE CALLIGRAPHIC 50 The calligraphic 50 element from the logo may be used on its own as a visual device. 1 10% tint on white 3 70% of page width It can only be used in the following ways: 1 as a tint on a white background 2 as a watermark on a coloured background. Publication title The following must be observed: 3 It should be placed in the bottom half of the page and cropped to the left edge. 4 The 50 watermark should not be used with any other wording in the watermark style. 5 The 5 in 50 should be cropped to the page edge as illustrated. 2 80% tint on coloured background Contact the Publications Office for further guidance. 4 5 Page edge The Department of Physics 6

9 Examples WEB PAGES The 50th logo will be added to the University CMS template later in Full guidelines on the use of the logo on the web will be issued. PUBLICATIONS As a general rule, the logo should be placed at the bottom left of any publication so that it is diagonally opposite the University logo. In these sample publications the logo has been foil-blocked as an additional finish. ROLLER BANNERS This example shows how the logo could work on a banner stand. 11 Your signature To insert the 50th Anniversary logo into your signature, please follow these directions: IN OUTLOOK 2007 Save the logo to your computer. In Outlook 2007, click on the Tools menu and choose Options. On the Mail format tab, click the Signatures button. In the Select signature to edit box select a signature; or create a new signature by clicking the New button, typing a name for the signature and clicking OK. In the Edit signature box, place your cursor where you would like the image to appear, and click the Picture button. Browse to the image you wish to include, select it, and click Insert. Highlight the image and click the Insert hyperlink button. In the address area type and click OK. Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog box. Click OK again. Note: you will need to send your s as HTML for the image to be seen. In Outlook 2007, click on the Tools menu and choose Options. On the Mail format tab ensure Compose in this message format is set to HTML. More details on amending signatures in Outlook 2007 are available at IN OUTLOOK 2010 Save the logo to your computer. In Outlook 2010, start a new message. Go to the Message tab and click Signature and then either select an existing signature from the list or create a new signature. In the Edit signature box, place your cursor where you would like the image to appear, and click the Picture button. Browse to the image you wish to include, select it, and click OK. Highlight the image and click the Insert hyperlink button. In the address area type and click OK. Click OK to finish with the signature. More details on amending signatures in Outlook 2010 are available at IN GOOGLE MAIL You will need to send with Rich formatting to be able to add an image to the message and signature. To check if you re currently using Rich formatting: start a new message and check above the message area for formatting buttons. If no buttons appear press Rich formatting to display them. You can then save or discard the message. Click the cog icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Click Settings. Scroll down to the Signature box. In the box, place your cursor where you would like the image to appear and click the Insert image button. Paste in this url: communications/50th/50_years_ .gif and click OK. Highlight the image and click the Link button. Paste in this url: and click OK. Save changes at the bottom of the page. More details on signatures in Google Mail are available at 9
