1 JOB DESCRIPTION POST: SALARY: HOURS: REPORTS TO: RESPONSIBLE TO: LOCATION: Paramedic Depending on experience As agreed in Bank Contract Site Manager/ Senior Station Manager Director of Paramedic Services Ambulance Station or Hospital Base Job Summary Under the direction of the Senior Station Manager, Site Manager or Controller the postholder will be responsible for the delivery of high quality treatment and care for patients in the urgent and nonemergency environments in between healthcare facilities. The position requires the paramedic to be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). The postholder is required to meet and work to the guidance of the HCPC Paramedics standard of proficiency, and Medical Services Ltd policies and procedures. Main duties and Responsibilities To provide a professional and caring service for all patients whilst in the care of Medical Services Ltd. Use of the appropriate knowledge and skills in order to make professional judgements, whilst autonomously conducting the appropriate diagnostic procedures and treatments inline with the appropriate level of training and competency. Flexibility: The postholder may be required to work at any of the company s sites within their allocated region in line with service needs. The post holder will be placed on flexible working hours - working on a 24 roster. 1. Clinical 1.1. Conduct patient assessment, including interpretation of 12-lead ECG when appropriate. Select and apply in each instance the appropriate patient care procedures in accordance with the current Institute of Health and Care Development (IHCD) Ambulance Service Basic Training Manual, IHCD Paramedic training manual, Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaisons Committee (JRCALC), Clinical practice guidelines and appropriate Medical Services Ltd (MSL) policies and procedures Complete and maintain a full and accurate clinical record for all patients, with particular emphasis on patient observations, treatment given, drug administration and eventual Unit 6-8, Twelvetrees Business Park, Twelvetrees Crescent, London E13 3JQ

To communicate highly sensitive medical information in distressing circumstances to the Patient and relatives where appropriate whilst promoting understanding of the presenting medical condition and providing advice and reassurance with empathy professionalism assertiveness and tact Continue to exercise duty of care to patient, ensuring an appropriate level of monitoring and treatment is maintained throughout the journey and after arrival at destination, until such time as a transfer of duty of care can be made, when Control must be informed as soon as possible of crew availability 1.4. Communicate in highly emotive situations where the need for informed consent is essential to convey distressing news and manage the consequences 1.5. To assist in the conveyance of patients and passengers using the appropriate equipment provided and/or manual handling techniques to the level of training provided by the organisation, in line with the MSL Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and MSL policies and procedures Manage patients, relatives and the general public in calm, caring and professional manner, treating them with dignity and respect at all times, often in difficult or hostile circumstances On arrival at setting, make dynamic risk assessment of the environment and general situation, having due regard for the health and safety of self and others, and through control request additional support appropriate to the circumstances Adherence to the following drug legislation:- Misuse of Drugs Act regulations. Prescriptions Only Medication Act 1968, 1997 amendments act Including the appropriate dispense of POMS (Restricted Drugs). Responsible for the use, movement and security of drug stocks. Including the use and documentation of class A and other controlled drugs used and carried To review and evaluate own clinical performance after each job and maintain a professional portfolio to discuss with their line Manager or Paramedic Team Manager at regular Personal Development Planning (PDP s), appraisals or refresher training courses. 2. Training and Development As per Paramedic Assisted Study Scheme (PASS) and MSL Training and Development Policy. 3. Vehicles and Equipment 3.1. At the commencement of each shift the post holder is to check that the allocated vehicle is equipped appropriately and is road worthy reporting issues through the VDI on the company issued XDA, or onsite manager To carry out daily routine checks, e.g. oil, water, brake fluid, battery levels and tyre tread and pressure, as per daily VDI check Complete and record vehicle equipment check list (including equipment daily function checks), and ensure that equipment is ready for use and that expendable stores have been replenished, filling in relevant documentation, signing check list and taking over responsibility for the vehicle and its contents 3.4. Maintain high standards of cleanliness of vehicle during the shift in line with MSL SSOW and policies Page 2

3 3.5. Drive company vehicles in a safe and proper manner, under all driving conditions having due regard to the needs of the patient, the safety of other road users, the conditions and prevailing traffic regulations, and using audio-visual warnings only where necessary 3.6. During the shift, report all accidents, adverse incidents, breakdowns and defects to vehicle and equipment by informing Control, and completing relevant documentation To handle hazardous waste e.g. vomit, faeces, urine and patients who have had treatment with radioactive isotope fluids and a working knowledge of contagious / infectious diseases and to take necessary precautions 3.8. Replace all consumable items following shift and ensuring the vehicle is equipped for operational use It is of primary importance that the National speed limits and road laws are adhered to. The paramedic has a duty of care to ensure the patients safety and comfort whilst in transit. If authorisation has been provided for the use of blue lights drivers must adhere to the Medical Services Ltd Blue Light policy. 5. Supervisory Duties 5.1. The Post Holder may be responsible for the supervision of staff during their training period influencing their development and guiding them through clinical procedures When working with a colleague, who is less clinically qualified or less experienced, the post holder will be expected lead in patient care at all times and provide appropriate guidance to colleagues as necessary Responsible to supervise and mentor new and lesser-qualified staff and take full Clinical Responsibility. 6. General 6.1. To ensure that statutory regulations and organisational policies, procedures and Safe System of Work directions are implemented and adhered to at all times 6.2. Maintain strict adherence to company workwear policy and present a professional image at all times To maintain absolute professionalism, integrity and confidentiality for all patients, their families, MSL staff and those from other agencies To act at all times in a manner consistent with legislation, policy and procedures in respect of Equality and Diversity 6.5. To work to the values of the organisation and display high standards of integrity and professionalism towards clients and colleagues 6.6. To continuously develop and update own knowledge and skills within the job role and contribute to setting own work objectives To ensure that at all times patient safety remains paramount and safe systems of work are adhered to regarding manual lifting techniques Carry out tasks relating to evaluating services e.g. staff questionnaires, audits, clinical and/or equipment trials Share best working practices with colleagues to maintain and improve clinical skills Ensure Compliance with the following; Patient Care Record completion (including electronic) Page 3

4 Clinical Guidelines Any other documentation relating to MSL business Observe and comply with Medical Services Ltd Health and Safety policies and procedures Report & record of all incidents or near misses Maintain confidentiality of patient records at all times To undertake any other duties relevant to the post as may be assigned from time to time which are consistent with the post. 7. Communications 7.1. Maintain regular communication with Ambulance Control regarding updates and changes to personal and/or vehicle availability and movements Report & record all delays or waiting time incurred 8. Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) checks Employees who have contact with patients in the course of their normal duties are subject to enhanced CRB checks every three years. Under the conditions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, as amended, employees are not entitled to withhold information about convictions which otherwise might be considered spent The Post holder must work within the confines of the said and stated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). In addition the post holder must ensure that the above responsibilities are met and such other duties and tasks as are allocated at the discretion of the Company are within the post holder s capabilities and within the scope of the post. The organisation reserves the right to review the post holders performance on a regular basis and it expected that unless prevented by ill health the post holder will devote the whole of their working time attention and abilities to the business of the organisation. 9. 6 Person Specification Job Title: HCPC Registered Paramedic These are the minimum requirements needed for the trained, competent jobholder: Criteria Qualifications Registered Paramedic with the Health Professionals Council IHCD Emergency Vehicle Driver Training qualification IHCD Qualified or Certified Ambulance Paramedic Experience a period of up to 2 years working as a Registered Paramedic experience of coping with difficult situations and dealing with people in sensitive, distressing, traumatic, and potentially hostile & dangerous circumstances Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Hold a valid EU Driving License (No more than 3 endorsement points. In exceptional circumstances a maximum of 6 points may be considered) and no convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs Good verbal and written communication skills, able to convey information well and complete all necessary documentation accurately and legibly. Able to work well under pressure, assimilate information quickly and make decisions on diagnosis and treatment Good physical co-ordination and manual dexterity in difficult and cramped environments and where the patients condition is time critical and speed and accuracy is essential Application of advanced driving skills with due regard for patient condition Able to work well as member of a team. Able to communicate across wide demographic boundaries in an appropriate manner Displays good interpersonal skills Knowledge of working practices of Hospital A&E departments, Coronary Care Units, Intensive Care Units, Paediatric units and Operating Theatres Have sound knowledge of medical conditions, and illnesses of general population, including paediatric, geriatric and obstetrics. Able to operate all equipment safely and in accordance with Company policy, procedures and protocols Respects and applies patient confidentiality at all times Displays good diplomatic skills, is tactful and discreet Good organizational skills, is able to identify priority pathways and act effectively under pressure Able to produce accurate records in accordance with MSL policy Page 6
