Geospatial Semantic Architecture Objectives to Support a Graduate Course on Ontology and Semantics Dalia Varanka, Adjunct Professor Johns Hopkins University, Advanced Academic Programs October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial 1 Architectures
Geospatial Ontology and Semantics Course Advanced Academics Programs Masters degree program in GIS Elective course No programming required October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 2
Problem: Design a Course that Integrates within the geographic information (GI) science context Builds on semantic technology strengths Perceived to be a valuable GIS skill October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 3
Data Analyst Not the main architecture designer or subject expert Versed in theory, concepts, and methods of GIS October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 4
Areas of Geospatial Semantics Study Applying semantic technology tasks Resolving geospatial semantics problems in GIS Formalizing quantitative and qualitative geographic science semantics October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 5
Task Lectures and Exercises Most textbooks and learning materials for the Semantic Web follow a sequence such as: Excel for data import Tables-to-triples data conversion Ontology design software, such as Protégé Parliament or other GeoSPARQL triplestore and endpoint Linking Open Data Text processor for natural language semantic analysis Cmap or other concept map/data modeling software Upper ontology Formal logic and inference reasoning (advanced topics) October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 6
Task Exercises Practice essential technical skills Must be oriented toward course objectives (provide a result) Provide supporting detail to broader themes (demonstrate concepts) October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 7
Major Semantic Problems Active research topics in GI science Data trust Representation Technology October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 8
Student Perceptions of Problems Data Trust Ambiguity of map or database quality Trust of data sources or production expertise Data maintenance October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 9
Data Trust Solutions to Explore Ontologies of metadata Source data or expert background inference Triplestore versioning October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 10
Student Perceptions of Problems - Representation Naming variants/version/change Place creates meaning: capture of social/humanistic data Impact of semantics on measurement systems October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 11
Representation Ontology Ontology-driven gazetteers Ontology as social construction Clarifications of decisions driving measurement systems October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 12
Student Perception of Problems - Technology Influence of predominant commercial software Focus on the software, not the concepts Semantics designed for the institution or technology, not for the problem October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 13
Technology Ontology of the Data Model Improve cohesion of GIS attributes by designing GIS tables or map design choices using ontology Design ontology-based GIS software October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 14
Expand Beyond Geometries Geostatistics and GIS Ontology to facilitate difficult to follow materials Ontologies of geographical texts Formalize the spatial assumptions and dynamics represented in narratives involving spatial concepts October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 15
Cayley Maxwell Surface Networks
Categorical Spatial Relations Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) Subsystem: Lacustrine Littoral The Littoral Subsystem includes shallow habitats in the Lacustrine System. The shoreward boundary of this subsystem extends to the landward limit of non-persistent emergents. The lakeward boundary includes all waters to a depth of 2 meters below Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), or to the maximum extent of nonpersistent emergents, whichever depth is greater.
Summary Geospatial semantic architecture for learning will be able to: Perform of technical tasks Integrate and complement other geospatial technology Expand geographical semantics beyond geospatial geometry October 29, 2013 Workshop on Semantics in Geospatial Architectures 18
