Dual WAN Configuration 1.0 Login First login to Management UI, ( ) default router IP You will be requiring entering the user name and password, which are both admin by default. Select System Management 2.0 Dual WAN Select Dual-WAN, you will see the following screen shot, Figure 0.1(Dual-WAN Screen Shot) Figure 0.1(Dual-WAN Screen Shot) 3.0 Smart Link Backup You will first encounter Smart Link Backup under Dual-WAN page. The drop-down box enables you to set WAN1 as Primary WAN, or set WAN2 as Primary WAN. The default Primary WAN is WAN1. Smart Link Backup allow only one active link at all time, one WAN is to be selected as the primary link, and the others as secondary links. Upon the lost connection of the primary interface, the secondary interface will be activated immediately and act as a backup link, substitute the position of the primary link. The secondary interface will act as an active link until the TCP session regain primary interface connection, then the secondary interface will return

to the role as a back up link. The smart Link Backup function will be ideal when primary and backup interfaces are connected to two different ISPs. 4.0 Load Balance (Auto Mode) In order to use the Dual WAN mode, both links are to be connected to ISP and used at the same time, Click on Load Balance (Auto Mode) to use both WAN ports at the same time. Bandwidth, Network Service Detection and Protocol Binding will become visible. Remember to click on Apply button at the bottom after selecting Load Balance (Auto Mode). Bandwidth function will compute the max bandwidth of WAN1 and WAN2 automatically by using Weighted Round Robin to balance the loading. Select the Upstream and Downstream bandwidth given by your ISP, the Intelligent Balancer will compute the bandwidth ratio automatically. Figure 0.2 (Load Balance (Auto Mode)-Bandwidth Screen Shot) 4.1 Bandwidth The weight of the equalizer is calculated from the ratio of WAN1 upstream bandwidth and WAN2 upstream bandwidth. If the bandwidth utilization of the destined WAN interface excess over 60%, intelligent balancer will direct the new session to the WAN which have higher available bandwidth, if both bandwidth utilizations of WAN1 and WAN2 are over 60%, new session will be routed to the WAN which have higher available bandwidth. The basic fundamental of the packets allocation is demonstrated like this: If the user sets in 1M for WAN1-Upstream and 512K for WAN2-Upstream, the ratio for the auto-load balance will be 2:1, which means the sessions which are forwarded by WAN1 is two times the session of WAN2. Figure 0.3 (Bandwidth Upstream Screen Shot)

Dual WAN Router WAN1 Internet PC1 LAN WAN2 Figure 0.4 (Bandwidth Ratio Diagram) Step 1: PC1 browses web site, the packet will be forwarded by...wan1 Step 2: PC1 browses web site, the packet will be forward by.. WAN1 Step 3: PC1 browses web site, the packet will be forward by.. WAN2 Step 4: PC1 pings with 4 packets, the 1 st, 2 nd, 4 th packets will be forwarded by. WAN1 the 3 rd packet will be forwarded by. WAN2 4.2 Network Service Detection (NSD) Figure 0.5 (NSD Screen Shot) Tick Enable Network Service Detection

Figure 0.6 (NSD Enable Screen Shot) NSD is used to detect the network connection status of ISP by ping Default Gateway, ISP Host, Remote Host or DNS Lookup Host. NSD is a convenient tool which allows you to determine which section of the connection is lost. Retry count is the number of time you request NSD to ping either Default Gateway, ISP Host, Remote Host and DNS Lookup Host, the default value is 5 times, and Retry timeout is 30 second., From the When Fail selection, you can choice: Generate the Error Condition in the System Log or Remove the Connection when ping fail. Generate the Error Condition in the System Log will generate a System log to inform user that the ISP connection is disconnected. Remove the Connection will suspend the WAN interface where the network connection to ISP is not active. The traffic will be dispatched to the alternative WAN Interface, and when the network connection to the ISP is connected back again, the traffic will be dispatch back to the primary WAN interface. Figure 0.7 (NSD WAN1)

If Default Gateway and ISP Host ( ) are selected for detection, Figure 0.7 (NSD WAN1), this is how the Retry count and Retry timeout work when pinging fail: Ping Default Gateway...1 st time unsuccessful nd time unsuccessful. 3 rd time unsuccessful. 4 th time unsuccessful. 5 th time unsuccessful Retry timeout..30 seconds Ping ISP Host st time unsuccessful nd time unsuccessful. 3 rd time unsuccessful. 4 th time unsuccessful. 5 th time unsuccessful Generate the Error Condition in the System Log or Remove the Connection Figure 0.8 (NSD Diagram)

Figure 0.8 (NSD Diagram) clearly demonstrate when running NSD, which section of the network connection is not active. 5.0 System Log Figure 0.9 (Log Screen Shot)

Click on the View System Log button under Management UI page (Figure 0.9 (Log Screen Shot)), you will be able to see the NSD log, when your network connection with ISP failed, Figure 0.10 (System Log Screen Shot) below shows a screen shot of a sample System Log. Figure 0.10 (System Log Screen Shot) If your network connection is disconnected, the following method can help you determine which WAN is not active. When connection fail, first unplug one of the WAN port, e.g. unplug RJ-45 port from WAN2, leaving WAN1 connected. Go back to Dual-WAN\Network Service Detection page, select Default Gateway, ISP Host, Remote Host and DNS Lookup Host under WAN1. Figure 0.11 (NSD WAN1) Figure 0.11 (NSD WAN1 Screen Shot) If network service detection is successful, proves WAN1 connection is active, unplug WAN1, re-plug WAN2 and repeat the NSD process to check if network connection between WAN2 and WAN2 s ISP is active.

If WAN1 NSD detected error, error condition will be generated in the system log. From the error condition, we can see which Host the NSD is unable to ping, and we can determine which section of the network connection is not active. See Figure 0.8 (NSD Diagram). 6.0 Protocol Binding Figure 0.12 (Protocol Binding Screen Shot) Protocol Binding allows you to specify the internal IP or particular Service to go via the specified WAN port. For the Service field, you can selection the service from the drop down box or click on the Service Management button to view all services, add new services or select multiple services

. Figure 0.13 (Protocol Binding Service Management Screen Shot) Here you can select a service or number of services, choice the Protocol and the Port Range, Click on Apply when finished, to return to previous page. Port numbers below 1024 are called well-known ports and are reserved for standard services. For example, any process wishing to establish a connection to a host to transfer a file using FTP, can connect to the destination host s port 21 to contact its FTP service. Similarly, to establish a remote login session using TELNET, port 23 is used. But when a service which does not have a standard port number and the service may consist of a range of port numbers, we will require the use of port range. For example, Bit Torrent uses the port numbers of 8881 to 8999, this is where Port Range come in handy.

Figure 0.14 (Protocol Binding FTP Screen Shot) Figure 0.14 (Protocol Binding FTP Screen Shot) shows that I have chosen FTP[TCP/21~21] service. IP to will be able to use FTP through WAN1 to the destined IP address of Tick the Enable box to enable the Protocol Binding rule. 7.0 Save Figure 0.15 (Dual WAN GUI Save button) Remember to save, click on the Apply button at the bottom of the Dual WAN page Figure 0.15.
