2 Supervisor Phone Number: POSITION DETAILS Under general supervision from the Production Manager, work on Mondavi Center (MC) projects and events as a member of the Production Department team, to plan, coordinate, implement, and oversee stage lighting and video work for theatre productions and other events as well as lighting and video equipment and system maintenance at the Mondavi Center UC Davis. Oversee pre-hangs and lighting focus calls. Is a resource for lighting board and video projection operators. Job Summary: Carry out touring lighting designers' and production managers' directions while safeguarding Mondavi Center policies, procedures, and equipment. Advises the Production Manager on lighting and video specifications in artists' riders. Maintain high standards of craftsmanship, efficiency, and safety. Provides inventory control, continuity in usage of lighting and video equipment, and general technical and production assistance for all events. Oversees the activities of staff, part-time, and student stage crew during work calls. Campus Job Scope: Department Specific Job Scope: Positions Supervised: Essential Responsibilities: The position supports the strategic goals of the unit through leading the electrics (lighting and video) crews specifically and contributing to the Production Department overall, actions that are essential to the continued operation and success of the MC. This position does not directly supervise, but has lead responsibilities for a constantly varying number of Limited Time Scene Technicians and Student Crew Members with varying degrees of theatre production experience. NA 60% MASTER ELECTRICIAN Under general supervision from the Production Manager, serve as the Master Electrician. Review and implement light plots and lighting and video specifications for all events, including renting or borrowing additional lighting, video, and electrical equipment when necessary. Adapt lighting plots of touring artists and companies to MC's technical capabilities. Coordinate with touring lighting designers and production managers to facilitate agreement on use of in-house systems and equipment. Coordinate with event stage managers to schedule crew with an appropriate level of training. Assist in creation and hanging of rigging for lighting and video equipment on MC events. Act as technical resource regarding all lighting and video related activities. Research new lighting and video equipment and technological developments; recommend equipment for purchase, repair, or upgrade. Detect, diagnose, and resolve lighting, video, and theatrical electrical problems. Maintain theatrical lighting, video, and electrical systems, houselights, backstage safety lighting, tools, and related
3 components, including inspection, inventory control, diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance. Train and evaluate staff, parttime, and student crew members in lighting and video equipment setup and operation, ensuring quality of lighting and video projection at all Mondavi Center events. Identify and develop a pool of back-up higher-level production electricians and lighting board operators. Cross-train staff members in the programming and operation of MC lighting consoles. 30% GENERAL TECHNICAL AND THEATRE PRODUCTION Under general supervision from the Production Manager, assist in coordination and implementation of production logistics, both technical and non-technical, for all performances. Set up, run, and strike lighting, sound, and stage plots for theater, dance, music, and performance events in multiple venues as well as non-traditional production settings. Provide assistance with event set-up and breakdown in support of auxiliary events within the Mondavi Center. Model safe and appropriate use of facility, tools and equipment, maintaining compliance with health and safety standards. Ensure stage crew and artists understand and observe required safety practices. Coordinate with other Mondavi Center units to clarify needs for events (e.g., Development, Arts Education, etc.). Oversee part-time and student crew members in general job functions as they pertain to performance preparation. Maintain high level of motivation, teamwork, and professionalism for stage crew personnel. Participate in all aspects of theatre production. Assume back-up role as lead audio, carpenter, or stage manager. Physical Demands: 10% STAGE MANAGEMENT Communicate with other Mondavi Center staff, presenters, artists, and crew to ensure appropriate planning and implementation of scheduled events. Coordinate all technical and production elements for selected events. Oversee part-time and student crew members in general job functions as they pertain to event preparation. Ensure health and safety practices are observed. Schedule stage crew, create and distribute pre- and post-event paperwork, and input required information in the event/billing program in a timely manner that meets all deadlines. Provide additional support to the Mondavi Center as required. Work on ladders, personnel lifts, catwalks, loading bridges, and theatrical grids up to 100' above the stage floor. Detect visual and audio problems. Lift a minimum of 65 lbs. utilizing safe lifting and moving techniques. Restricted vacation during peak periods. Work Environment: Work a flexible schedule and overtime including evenings, weekends and holidays in support of the Mondavi Center's event schedule. Safely function in low-light and unlit stage environments. Work in high pressure situations with tight deadlines.
4 Background Check Required: This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks. Yes QUALIFICATIONS Experience in technical theatre production, primarily in the areas of stage lighting and theatre electrical and control systems, with a minimum of apprentice-level experience in video projection. Experience in technical theatre or stage production including knowledge of technical theatre protocol, chain of command, and stage equipment and practices. Experience acting as a master electrician for live performances and events (both rehearsed and unrehearsed) in a roadhouse situation. Knowledge of and working experience with theatrical lighting, video, and electrical systems and equipment, including computer lighting controllers, all types of conventional theatrical lighting instruments, followspots, digital communication networks (DMX protocol), theatrical lighting circuits, dimming systems, video projectors and data switchers, houselight systems, auxiliary power panels, and power distribution. Minimum Qualifications: Experience reading and interpreting artist riders and stage drawings, including light plots, blueprints, sketches, schematics, ground plans and sections, instrument schedules, and channel hook-ups. Experience with stage rigging, counterweight systems, and audio systems. Experience operating power tools, hand tools, and pneumatic equipment within safety guidelines. Experience with soldering, using ohmmeters and multimeters, and performing bench work on lighting and electrical equipment. Knowledge of and skills with electricity to safely load circuits, identify overloads and short circuits, and diagnose and repair defective equipment. Ability to pursue and achieve an ETCP Entertainment Electrician Certification as offered by the Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA) with assistance from MC staff development funding when available. Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate both orally and in writing; elicit information needed to clarify inquiries and requests; resolve sensitive or difficult situations diplomatically; and to work effectively and cooperatively with
5 constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds, perspectives, and levels of theatre production experience. Organizational skills to manage the multiple details and tasks associated with executing productions; and to assume general assignments and follow through to successful completion with a minimum of direction, including recognizing new tasks and projects that become necessary. Experience working with a staff with a wide variety of experience levels to motivate stage crew members and encourage participation, teamwork, and model and promote a respectful, professionally appropriate working environment which adheres to health and safety guidelines. Experience working with a wide variety of users, including regional, national, or internationally-known artists to community renters; and working cooperatively and productively while enforcing facility policies and procedures. Experience with ETC EOS/ION consoles and ETC Sensor dimmers. Experience with followspots utilizing Xenon arc lamps. Experience with intelligent lighting, including theatrical LED fixtures, and arc lamp luminaires. Experience with high-end professional video projectors and equipment, including but not limited to Barco projectors and image processors. Experience with Ethernet control networks that use DMX conversion nodes. Experience with diagnosing problems with and the care of electronic components. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of low voltage and AC and DC circuits. Experience with motors. Experience working with and leading a crew with a variety of experience levels, including union members, road crews, part-time staff, and student stage crew members in the completion of their daily tasks. An active ETCP Entertainment Electrician Certification as offered by the Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA). Experience using Vectorworks and Lightwright software, electronic personnel scheduling software, and electronic scheduling/event/billing software.
