1 Courtroom Technology System From the Assistant s Station Touchscreen You should see this screen on the control touchscreens. If not, touch the screen to wake it up. If that does not work try the power button on the right edge. ONLY USE THE SOFT PART OF YOUR FINGER, do not use a pen or stylus on any of the touchscreens. Touch the logo and it will bring up a number pad to enter the password. If you don t know the password contact Technology Services. After typing in the password touch done. The courtroom technology system can be used in two modes, classroom and courtroom. This manual covers only courtroom mode. Classroom mode offers a simplified and limit mode for normal classroom use. Choose Courtroom. The system should turn on and bring you to the main screen. The area displaying color bars in the picture to the right will display the video from the device you have selected. The default is the logo screen. Use the buttons access the bottom to switch devices. From left to right they are: Exit, Audience Response PC, Logo Screen, PC Select, Document Camera, DVD, VCR, Audio Cassette, Witness Auxiliary Input, Control Room Router and Assistant Auxiliary Input. Other buttons include: Plasma Display Power, Volume Control, Camera Control, Room Light Control and a Main Volume Adjustment. All of these buttons are covered in more detail below.

2 Use the Exit button to shutdown the system. It will ask you to confirm shutdown in the popup window to the right. Audience Response PC, Logo Screen buttons switch the courtroom displays to these devices. The audience response system is not covered in the manual, contact Technology Services for more information. The PC Select button lets you choose the different laptop inputs throughout the room. There are two inputs at both the prosecution and defense tables and one input at the assistant station, witness box, and podium. There are also inputs at the judge s bench and clerk station but these are only assessable from the judge or clerk s control touchscreens. See the judge and clerk section of the manual for more information. You may need to turn on your laptop s VGA output. To do this n Dell Laptops, hold down the Fn key and hit the F8 key. You may have to hit the F8 key more then once. You may also need to lower your laptop s screen resolution to 1024x768 or lower to get it to display on all the monitors. The Doc Cam button lets you select the document camera at the assistant s station. To control the document camera use the controls on the front of the base (pictured below). To zoom in use the Tele button and to zoom out use the Wide button in the center on the controls. If the image is out of focus, use the AF button to refocus. The Lamp button allows you to change where the light is coming from. It works on a three-way toggle, upper lamps, the lamps in the base and all lamps off. The White Balance and Contrast buttons can adjust the image to improve the image quality and color. The POS/NEG button changes the image to a color negative of the original.

3 The DVD button switches the courtroom displays and audio system to the DVD player in the assistant s station and pops up a control widows (pictured right). Insert a DVD and then use the popup window to control the DVD player. The DVD player will also play audio CDs. The VHS button switches the courtroom displays and audio system to the VHS player in the assistant s station and pops up a control widows (pictured right). Insert a tape and then use the popup window to control the VHS player. The Audio Cass button switches the courtroom displays and audio system to the audio cassette player in the assistant s station and pops up a control widows (pictured right). Insert a tape and then use the popup window to control the audio cassette player. The Witness AUX and Asst AUX buttons switches the courtroom displays and audio system to the auxiliary audio and video input located at these locations. The witness box s input plate is under the countertop on the right side. It has a laptop with audio input and three RCA audio and video input. The assistant station s input plate is under the desk, below the document camera on the left side. It only has the three RCA audio and video input. Any audio or video device that supports this type of input can be hooked up and displayed on the courtroom monitors.

4 The Contr Rm Router button switches the courtroom displays and audio system to the auxiliary audio and video input located in the control room. This is an advance feature; contact Technology Services for more information. The Plasma Power button located on the left side turns the three large plasma screens on and off. The default is to turn them on at system startup. Please turn off the plasmas if you are not displaying anything for a long period of time. The Vol Controls button on the top right side allows you to control each microphone individually. It also volume controls for the videoconference system, Audio Conf (adjusts the incoming call on the teleconference system), PCs (adjusts ALL the laptop inputs), Playback (adjusts the DVD & VHS), White Noise (adjusts the white noise level during a bench conference), Cassette (adjusts the audio cassette player) and Audio Conf Input (adjust the outgoing call on the teleconference system). Use the top volume control after selecting the device. The Cam Control button switches the courtroom displays to any of the cameras around the courtroom. Once selected, use the Pan/Tilt controls to move the camera and the zoom control to zoom in or out. The Lights button pops up a window to adjust the room lights. It only stays on the screen for a few seconds.

5 Additional Functions at Judge and Clerk Control Touchscreens The judge and clerk touchscreens have several additional buttons and functions. Only the additional functions will be covered below. See the pervious pages for information on the basic functions. In the top left is the Judge Override button. Once pressed, all the courtroom displays are muted and popup window opens (pictured to the right) to allow the judge to selectively unmute different display zones. The judge can also press the Judge Override button again to unmute the displays. A red background indicates the display is muted. Below the Judge Override button is the Bench Conference button. This turns on the white noise in the jury box and gallery and mutes all microphones except the bench conference microphone. When pressed again, the microphones unmute and the white noise is turned off. The Clear Annotation button clears the annotation from the two annotation touchscreens at the witness box or assistant s station. The Timer button allows control of the appellate timing system. It allows starting, stopping, resetting and changing the total run time. It also displays the same warning lights as the podium lights. This is an advance feature, contact Technology Services before use. The Print button prints an image of whatever is currently being displayed. The printer is located in the assistant s station.

6 The PC Select button offers all the same inputs as the assistant s station touchscreen with the addition of the judge and clerk inputs. The Cam Control button switches the courtroom displays to any of the cameras around the courtroom. Once selected, use the Pan/Tilt controls to move the camera and the zoom control to zoom in or out. To send the camera to the display, select the camera then touch the Take button. This allows the camera to be moved or zoomed without it being displayed. The Video Conf button bring ups a popup window to initiate a videoconference. You may need to use the Menu button to wake up the videoconference CODEC. Then use the arrow keys to navigate the on-screen menu. This is an advance feature, contact Technology Services before use. Only one room can use the videoconference CODEC at a time. If it is already in use, you will see this message. Contact Technology Services for additional help. The Phone Conf button bring ups a popup window to initiate a teleconference. This is an advance feature, contact Technology Services before use.

7 Additional Features & Contact Information Touchscreen Annotation System: The LCD in the witness box and at the assistant s station allows annotation over what is being displayed. By touching and dragging your finger on the screen you can draw a line over anything being displayed. ONLY USE THE SOFT PART OF YOUR FINGER, do not use a pen or stylus on any of the touchscreens. To cycle through the available annotation colors, touch the top left corner of the screen. To undo the last annotation, touch the top right corner of the screen. To clear all annotations, touch the lower left corner of the screen. The judge and clerk control touchscreens can also clear all annotations. Wireless Microphones: There are two lapel and one handheld wireless microphones available in the courtroom. Contact Technology Service to use these microphones. Recording: The activities in the courtroom can be recorded upon request. Up to five different audio and video sources can be recorded to VHS tape, one audio and video source to DVD, one audio only source to CD, Audio Cassette and MP3 file. Contact Technology Services for more information. Inter-Room Linking: The courtroom, boardroom, distance learning room, and jury rooms can be linked via audio and video. This allows the activities in one room to be viewed in the other rooms. Contact Technology Services for more information. Wireless Control Touchscreen: A wireless control touchscreen is available for use in the courtroom. It offers similar, but limited, control functionality as the assistant s touchscreen.
