Directions on How to Set up Your Spam Settings in your *for those individuals who use the district's web-based (webmail) Joe has done some work on the Web-based accounts. If you log into your account (click on the webmail link on the left-hand side of the district web page united.k12.il.us) This will take you to the webmail log in page, as seen in the image below:
Type your login name in the name box, and your password in the password box. Type your username here Type your password here Your account will come up and look something like the picture below:
Notice that the page is divided into two parts; the left side is where your folders are located. The following folders are in everyone's INBOX this is where all of your mail comes into. Drafts where you can save letters you have started and want to work on later Learn FP this folder is where you will want to put any s that Spam Assassin is recognizing as Spam, but is actually an that you want to receive Learn Spam this folder is where you will put any s that Spam Assassin is not recognizing as Spam, but you want it to learn it as Spam Sent this folder contains copies of all the s you send ot others Spam this is where the s that have been recognized as Spam by Spam Assassin will be sent. We will set up your account so that Spam s will automatically be sent there on the next page. Trash this folder contains the s that you have deleted from your inbox, or any other folder you may have. You need to click on the purge link (which comes up to the right of the word once there are in it) occasionally to clean this out. Any other folders listed have been created by the individual user of the account. Joe has Spam Assassin running on our mail server. This program will look at each you receive, and 'rate' it on a score of 1-10 as to whether or not it is spam. Once all SpamAssassin tests have been run, the resulting score is matched against a set value, and if the score is greater than this value, the message is marked as spam. We will look at the value set for your account later on in this lesson. Before we do, you need to tell your account what to do with the s whose values are greater than the set spam value. We will set it up so that any s identified as spam will be automatically sent to the spam folder. To do this, do the following: Click on the body of an message in your Inbox that you recognize to be spam. The message NewLocalSinglesis a spam . Click on the subject to open the . Click on the subject to open the .
Click on the View Full Header link. Highlight the words X-Spam-Flag: YES and copy it (1). Then click on the Options link (2). 2) Click on Options link 1) Highlight and copy
A new window will appear that looks like the picture to the right. Click on the Message Filters link. Click on the New link to create a new filter.
Click the arrow to the right of the Match box, and choose Header. Paste the X-Spam-Flag : YES that you copied from the header (or just type it it, but it must be exactly as it appears in the header of the ). Click on the arrow to the right of the Move box, and choose Spam. Click the Submit button. Make sure that the text in all of the boxes on this page of your matches what it written above, and then click the Submit button. The filter will be added to your account, and you should see a new window appear that looks like the one on the next page.
New Message Filter that you created Okay, the first part is done. But you still need to make some adjustments in your Spam Filter window. To get there, click once again on the Options link. This time, click on the Spam Filters link, as shown on the image below.
This will bring up the Spam filters window. It is shown on the next page.
Make sure these options are checked Make sure you click this button any time you make changes on this page. This is the Spam filters window. Make sure the following boxes are checked in your account: Use DCC; Use SpamNet (version 2); Use Bayesian Filter; Always Add Headers. The Spam Score is set at 5. If you wish to keep more s out that are spam, you can lower the numbers by clicking on the arrow to the right of the box. However, if you lower the number, you may end up having s that you want to keep being sent to your Spam folder. It may be the best to leave your spam score at 5, and then 'train' your account to recognize any items that you consider to be spam that are still getting through. ****Make sure you click the Save Settings button after you make your changes.
Just under the Save Settings button is a section about addresses. If you click on the Allow button, you will whitelist all of your addresses, which means that all of the people in your address book will automatically be allowed to enter your Inbox. Legend Whitelist From from these addresses will not be marked as spam. You may use '*' as a wildcard to allow a large number of addresses at one time. E.g. Whitelist From '*@aol.com' will not mark any message that claims to be from aol.com as spam. Don't Whitelist From This address will be excluded from a previous whitelist and will be treated as a normal address, i.e. it will not be automatically allowed. Blacklist From from these addresses will always be marked as spam. You may use '*' as a wildcard to block a large number of addresses at one time. E.g. Blacklist From '*@aol.com' will mark all messages that claims to be from aol.com as spam. Don't Blacklist From This address will be excluded from a previous blacklist and will be treated as a normal address, i.e. it will not be automatically denied. to these addresses will not be marked as spam. This is useful for allowing lists. For example, you can allow all messages from an list that sends to 'Tofu-SupportWhitelist To List@beeflovers.com'. You may use '*' as a wildcard to allow a large number of addresses at one time. E.g. Whitelist To '*@aol.com' will not mark any message that claims to be to aol.com as spam.
This will set up your account so that most of what comes in that is Spam will be identified as such, and moved to the Spam folder. You will need to purge (clean out) your Spam folder occasionally. To do this, click on the Options link and choose the Spam Filter link. Right at the top of this page is a purge button. Click on this button to delete all of the that is in your Spam folder. Note: You may occasionally want to click on the Spam folder, and scroll though it to make sure that an you want didn't accidentally get there by mistake. If this happens, click on the box in front of the , and move it to the Learn FP folder. Another way you can filter your is to do the following: When you open an to read, you will see a list of links next to the Options line near the top of the . You can choose the Block Sender link to blacklist the sender. This will keep any s this particular sender mails you at a later date from being delivered to your mailbox. Or- you can click the Learn as Spam link. This will move the into the Learn Spam folder, and your will begin to recognize similar as Spam and put it in the Spam folder. Please see Rachel or Judy at the Jr/Sr high, or Amy at the elementary, if you have any further questions concerning your accounts.
